3 December 9, 2018, Second Sunday of Advent From the Pastor s Desk Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, There is a second candle lit, which guides our pilgrim feet to Bethlehem. For those who have been to the Holy Land, and have visited the town of Jesus birth, the experience of approaching the town is memorable. As we travel through the countryside, we realize that there is instability, as the world around us has been shaped by war and poverty; even the roads through stretches of desert shake us as we proceed on our journey. While we may be in comfortable buses, with suspension that absorbs most of the road s trauma, Judea continues to permeate tinted windows and climate controlled conditions, giving us a hint of what earlier pilgrims experienced as they approach the City of David. My own experience of Bethlehem, aside from the caution of an American in a town that was in Palestinian control, was of a place filled with old houses, hotels and tourist shops; except for the center, Manger Square. In the center of this large village, appeared the site of Christ s birth, although that spot was covered with buildings, buildings of different times and Christian Faith Traditions, Byzantine and Medieval European, mixed with Arabic, Persian and Turkish influences. For an historian, it was wonderful and confusing at the same time, for others it can seem mystical, spiritual or dirty and depressed, but there is something that continues to call us forward. Down into the lower parts, into caves that housed pilgrims and poor, Crusaders and Saracens, Eastern and Western Holy men and women, and heretics, saints who sought to live close to the place of the Incarnation, and a couple who came seeking shelter in a stable, as they awaited the birth of their child. In a cave, smaller than most Long Island bedrooms, decorated with marble and beeswax candles, there is a brass star, marking the spot where Mary gave birth to the Christ Child. A place that was once decorated with straw, shared with animals and other travelers too poor or unfortunate enough to find other lodgings, filled with the scents of animals, humans who had been on the road or out in pastures, and the oil lamps that gave their light to the coming into the world of the Light that overcomes the darkness of the world. Then, no one knew the significance of this place or of this child; while they suspected that there was something special, something that had only been hinted at before, the fullness of the Reality that lay in their midst, surrounded by animals and the indigent, would only be known after Calvary. But for 2000 years the faithful have kept this place in memory for what it is, the place where God took on our flesh and came among us. Walls that were once ordinary rock became transformed and adorned, as the devout celebrated the Gift that the Father had given to the human race, as His Son became the Son of Mary. Now, we come from all over the world to pay homage to this spot, this little piece of earth which welcomed our savior. Even for those of us unable to travel to the Holy Land, we are called to travel there in our prayers, to journey past those hardships of the world around us, not allowing bumps in the road to disrupt our spiritual pilgrimage. In spite of our own war weariness and spiritual, or even physical, poverty, we approach Bethlehem, the House of Bread, in order to encounter Christ, the Bread of Life, who feeds us with His own Flesh and Blood. Whatever our histories, whether ordered and decipherable, or confused and overlapping with struggles for our souls, we walk together with our brothers and sisters on a pilgrimage, coming to that inner sanctum. We look at the inner part of our hearts, which may be reminiscent of a barnyard scene, but we ask for the grace and faith to transform them into our own place of peace and calm, where the Christ Child may come into our world, and into the world of those we encounter. As we light this second candle on our wreath, we look to the strength that the Light of Christ gives us, to shine through the darkness of our world, to guide us to that Bethlehem which all Christians are called to keep in their hearts. 4 December 9, 2018 Second Sunday of Advent AWAITING THE SALVATION OF GOD The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the first reading. In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God s salvation. And we find Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can t get any better than this, can it? 5 Christmas Giving Tree 2018 Please join us in celebrating the 2018 Christmas Season by participating in the annual Giving Tree held by The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Outreach and the TIM 4:12 youth ministry. When taking from the Giving Tree you will receive 2 connected tags. The tags will include the age and gender of the recipient, their clothing sizes, favorite color and 1 item from their own specific wish list!! You may either purchase the wish list item that the recipient has requested or buy a gift using the additional information! Gifts can be dropped off below the Giving Tree before and after all weekend Masses, starting Saturday, November 17th at the 5pm Mass, and ending on Sunday, December 9th after the 1130am Mass (If for any reason you cannot drop off your gift during these times, contact the TIM 4:12 group as soon as possible). Kindly return your gift to the Giving Tree, wrapped with the original tags you took off the tree secured to the outside of the package. There will be an additional tree set up in the Parish Center during Religious Education classes for any of the families that find it easier to take from the Giving Tree there. The last day to leave gifts at the Parish Center will be December 5th. We will also accept donations of smaller items that can be combined with the packages already received. Anything helps and every donation will be gifted! Scarves, gloves, hats and blankets are always wonderful this time of year! Parish Outreach and tim 412 December 15th & 16th 2nd collection Next week there will be a second collection for energy costs for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Father Henry said he would cut out the parish 2nd collections and he would have only ENERGY. He has cut out all other 2nd collections for the parish in hopes that you would see all that has been done and all that is happening in your parish and add to your donation as we grow closer to our 100th anniversary in March 2019.

This year Sunday December 23rd is the 4th Sunday of Advent and after regular masses we will be changing to Christmas in under 3 hours. We have done this and it works very well as long as we know who is coming so a specific task can be assigned with proper supplies. There is a special mass scheduled at 6:00pm for Christmas, so we have to all come together for a short amount of time. Many hands make light work.
