Today has traditionally been called Gaudete Sunday. The Latin tag is derived from Paul s appeal in the second reading to rejoice always in the Lord, and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is the season of joy. Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. REGOCÍJATE! El nombre latino se deriva de la petición de Pedro en la segunda lectura de alégrense siempre en el Señor, y del texto de la Misa en latín en el que está basada esta lectura. La ironía y paradoja de esta alegría cristiana se manifiesta en el hecho que Pablo escribió esas palabras en la prisión. Pero desde allí podía ver el progreso de la obra de Dios. Nos parece obvio a nosotros? Sentimos que este no es un tiempo para la alegría cuando hay tanto sufrimiento e inmoralidad. Es interesante, entonces, que la primera lectura sea del profeta Sofonías, que está casi exclusivamente preocupado con sombrías visiones del Día del Juicio. Hoy la Iglesia selecciona la única parte optimista de Sofonías, donde el profeta es tocado por el espíritu del gozo. Esta es, se nos asegura en todas partes, la temporada de la alegría. Simbang Gabi celebrated at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church Copper Hill Dr., Saugus Sunday, December 16-5pm, Monday, December 17-7pm, Tuesday, December 18-7pm Wednesday, December 19-7pm, Thursday, December 20-7pm, Saturday, December 22-2pm and Sunday, December 23-2:30pm Join Us Today, Sunday, December 16th For Our Annual Christmas Concert & Potluck - And This Year Including our Las Posadas For some years, St. Clare s has enjoyed our Christmas Concert and Potluck and our Hispanic Community has celebrated Las Posadas. This year, some of the diverse cultures of our parish community join together to experience our same traditions in a new way. Each of our Church Choirs will be in the Church at 4:30pm to begin their sharing of their gift of song. Each group will share their favorite music selections with you. Then we will all go to the Parish Hall but this year, we will be made witness to Las Posadas. Las Posadas originated in Spain but has been celebrated in Mexico for over 400 years. It is also celebrated in parts of central and south American countries as well as here in the United States. Posadas means accommodations or lodging. As a reenactment of Mary & Joseph s journey and finding no room at the inn, the actors go from door to door seeking a place to stay singing along the way. Once they have arrived at the welcoming place there is a celebration. On Sunday, December 16th, our parish potluck will be a part of the celebration and the Parish Hall the welcoming place. We hope you will be able to bring your food to share to the Parish Hall prior to the concert because we don t want you to miss a minute of the this magical mixing of music and tradition. Once we are in the Parish Hall, we will enjoy the food you have brought to share and more Christmas music!

What act of kindness could you do this week? CHILDREN: What kind thing have you done for someone lately? Who could you make happy by your kindness this week? ADVENT SEASON This Sunday is Gaudete or Rejoice Sunday. The Third week of Advent, we light the rose candle in anticipation that we are almost to the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas and waiting for his second coming. As we await the coming of Christ, we can read the holy Scriptures especially the first two chapters of the Gospel of Luke. As St. Jerome said, How can one live without knowledge of Scripture, by which we come to know Christ himself, who is the life of believers. Whatever you do with your family for the Advent season, remember the meaning of Advent waiting preparing expecting excitement as we wait for the celebration of Christ s birth and that he will come again! Be Ready! CHRISTMAS VACATION December 21- January 11, 2013 the Elementary and Junior High children/youth will be off from Religious Education classes enjoying the Christmas season. Saturday students will return to classes on Saturday, January 12, Monday through Wednesday classes will resume January Family Promise... New Year, New Hope Since opening in the Spring of 2011, the local Family Promise organization has assisted 25 families, including 62 children. St. Clare s has been an important support site for helping these families transition from homelessness to homes of their own. Many of the adults have been able to go back to work because of assistance from the Family Promise staff. Their success would not have been possible without the support of St. Clare s and the other faith congregations in Santa Clarita. Special thanks to all St. Clare s members who have volunteered time and service or have donated financially to assist these families. You have given these children and their parents new hope for independence and dignity. The week of Jan. 27 Feb. 23, 2013, St. Clare s will again be assisting Bouquet Canyon Church in hosting families during the week. Volunteers are needed to provide evening meals, evening hospitality and overnight supervision. If you can assist, please contact Karen Mapes at or kmapes@socal.rr.com. Tuesday, December 18th - 7:30pm-9:00pm Mass Planning There will be Mass Planning in the Youth Hall on Tuesday, January 8th from 7:30 to 9pm, and an off campus Community Life event on Wednesday, January 9th (more details next week!) Youth Center Hours The Youth Center will be closed during the Christmas Break, December 17th through January 4th. The Youth Center will be open January 7th, 8th, 9th & 10th. You can do your homework, use the computer lab, grab a friend and come on over to play a game of pool, foos ball, watch a movie on our big screen T.V., or just hang out! Thank You Note from the Confirmation Major Project Students: (You Gave Us the Warm Fuzzies) Parish Family, We would like to thank you for your generosity. These past weekends we received an overwhelming amount of coats and blankets. All of these donations are being given to *various organizations around the Santa Clarita Valley. Thank you again for your support. *Various organizations include: the SCV Winter Homeless Shelter, Covenant House, Single Mother s Outreach, Independent Hispanic Homeless Outreach, MEND, Bible Tabernacle (includes Men s shelter and separate shelter for Women & children.) Just FYI. Our Youth Minister, Nancy Fishwick tells us that this group also made meals for Family Promise and the Homeless Shelter and contributed personal grooming items to Single Mother s Outreach. Their teachings are all about making progress in our spiritual lives. We are all devastated by their mother s death. Words cannot express the love and kindness so many of you at St. Clare s have given me. I especially want to thank the chapel rosary group for praying so fervently for my son and his children. In Christ, Jane Parker The Feast of the Holy Innocents The Knights of Columbus, Santa Clarita Assembly, invite all parishioners to join them in praying the Holy Rosary on the Feast of the Holy Innocents, Friday, December 28, at 2:00 pm. Rosary will be held in Our Lady of Lourdes Garden at the top of Eternal Valley Memorial Park in Newhall. Overlooking Our Lady of Lourdes Garden for the Catholic Faithful is a statue of Rachel Weeping, a Memorial to the Unborn erected by the Knights of Columbus to remember those souls lost to the horrors of abortion. Our Rosary is to pray for an end to abortions, a healing for those who have suffered a loss from abortion, and healing for those who have lost a child in childbirth.
