God Bless You ON YOUR JOURNEY Save the Date Oct. 3 rd CWF 1:00 pm Oct. 6th Craft and Bake Sale Oct. 10th WOW 6:30 pm Oct. 13 th Fall Clean Up Day Oct. 14 th Noisy Offering Support Team Mtg. Oct. 21 st Pastor Appreciation T Avenue P.O. Box 278 Phone: waukeechristianchurch@msn.com When I was a boy I used to go to the front yard of our home and play with a set of small metal cars. They weren t Hot Wheels or Matchbox, they were just hollow metal cars with narrow wheels. I would sit on the small hill of our yard and I would wear grooves into the grass to the point which all was left was dirt and the markings from the tires. I would create elaborate roadways, interconnecting, up and down the hill, along the slope, from one side of the yard to the other. It took time and I was in no rush. It wasn t supper time. Company wasn t coming over and we weren t going anywhere. The days were typical, and I was content. Once in a while I go by the old house. The hedges I hated to trim are low and at a manageable height. The large tree on the side of the house is gone, as is the tree in the front, and the Mulberry tree I loved to climb and harvest and snack upon in the back. Where the new owners got the idea to transform our rustic red stained shingles to a light blue I have no idea. Were they even curious about how long it took for us to do all that work? All those gallons. All those brushes. All those hours. Blue! And not just any blue, powder blue! The same kind of blue I nearly died over because one year for school clothes my parents brought home for me a pair of powder blue corduroys. A kid could get pounded for something like that! Powder blue! The house is now blue! Not only is the staining we had done now gone but so are all those ruts I had created in the yard. Gone. Just gone. This isn t just a story about my life. It s an experience we have throughout our lives. You. Me. Them. All of this. It all keeps moving and changing and becoming. How play got from hollow metal cars to game consoles with double handed multi-fingered controls and internet connections to play a video game with people throughout the world just amazes me. You know where this is going. As I sit in my study with an eye always to the window I see cars constantly coming from somewhere on the way to another somewhere. Kind of like what Jesus says about the Spirit. Who knows where it is coming from? Who knows where it is going? We can say the same thing about being church together. Somehow those wheels in the dirt have become memories in the expansive world of technology. Somehow, we moved from what was familiar to what is challenging. Somehow, we it moved from knowing just what to do to trying to figure out how to do it. We as church together, have always been on a journey with a restless God who ventures with us. From garden walks to a voice from a burning bush, to a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, to trembling mountains, to prophets crying out, to a voice in the wilderness, to a son, a cross, resurrection, and a breath breathed out upon all. God is always in the midst of the journey and our becoming. Curiosity is a gift. What is it God knows? What is it God invites us to? What is God asking of us in our day, our time, in this place, for this world in which we live? Just as I am getting to know you, you are getting to know me, and our journey takes a step forward in confidence that asks something of us. I hope you are as curious as I am? As we build upon the foundations of each generation who has been part of the story of Waukee Christian we strive to discover the questions we haven t asked to become the life we didn t know possible. I hope you are as hopeful as I am! Soon I ll be working with our Support Team as we return to the Strategic Planning conversations that took place before I arrived. Soon that same Support Team will be reading and studying together as we ponder the lessons from the book Real Good Church. Pray for us. Pray for all of us! That God will lead us and that together we can be and become the church God is calling us to be. Grace and Peace, Loren

Allison and Larry Hoffman have a new grandbaby! Brad Jaminet and Jenn Hoffman along with big brother, Preston, welcomed baby Mason Zayn into their family on August 26, Our congratulations go out to both his parents and his proud grandparents! Our stewardship campaign is fast approaching, and Stewardship materials will be arriving in the mail soon! Please take time to prayerfully consider the gifts you have received as well as the gifts you give of time, talents and financial resources. It seems like just a short time ago, we loaded over 350 bags of shoes onto the truck to be distributed to 3 rd world countries. Because of the success of that drive and the willingness of some of our partners to continue to collect shoes for us, we will be doing another drive this fall. If you have a craft or baked item that you would like to donate for the upcoming Craft and Bake Sale, please have it to the church by 8:00 am on Saturday morning on October 6 th. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in fellowship hall. The drive officially kicked off September 12 th and will go for 60 days. We have already collected over 60 bags of shoes. Please keep reaching out to your friends, relatives and neighbors for gently worn shoes. This project provides income and jobs for those in under-developed countries as well as having shoes find a second life rather than filling the landfills. Thanks for supporting this ministry!! - George Risinger

Attention - Communications/Social Media Committee Volunteers!! The Support Team has discussed the interest of forming a new committee responsible for Communications and Social Media for the Church. Our online presence is important for reaching out to potential new members and informing existing members of current activities within our Church. We are looking for volunteers that may have a desire to be a part of this committee if formed. Please reach out to either Jack Harris or Ryan Taylor if you have an interest. For some time Waukee Christian Church has had a Facebook page (Waukee Christian Church) which open to the public. In the near future, we will be forming a "closed" group for the members of the church. The purpose of this group would be to assist in sharing information and having conversations within the membership of the church without it being visible or accessible to those who are outside of the membership. Please keep your eyes open for this to come and be sure to accept the invitation in our hopes of increasing the level of communication and information sharing in our effort to be church together! Seven members of WOW met September 12th to kick off the year with a potluck and a wonderful evening of fellowship and devotions. We were amazed at the variety of dishes that seven women brought to share. Following the meal we addressed some old (the carpet cleaning) and new business (baby shower for Megan O'Hern, Ronald McDonald Open House, Operation Christmas Child, Craft and Bake sale, the 2018 calendar and the focus of WOW.) Resolutions include Tammy contacting Cimberly Hansen for Operation Christmas Child and Shari contacting Ronald McDonald House about the number attending. Juanita and Karen brought some craft ideas. It was decided to meet on Thursday, Oct. 4th at 6:00 pm to set up and to make some craft items to sell. Because so many WOW members will be gone that day, Tammy will make an announcement in church about needing helpers and baked items for that day. We will again help with the shoe drive and the hat and mitten tree this Christmas. Regarding the focus of WOW, it was decided that the CWF Opening Prayer was sort of the mission statement of the group which defines our focus as "we open our eyes to the needs of the world and fill our hearts with concern for all people." In that prayer we ask that God guide us that we may truly serve Him. With this being the focus of WOW, we are supportive of other possible groups being formed. For devotions, Tammy addressed the Bible verse Philippians 4:6 which says, "Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. The group discussed the meaning of prayer, ways to pray and what are things that we pray about. We also compared worry and concern and is worrying a sin. Tammy read a devotional telling of a man that put together a "Worry Chart" and in his findings and analyzing the things he worried about, he found that 40 percent of the things he had worried about were now things that were very unlikely to happen...30 percent were worries about past decisions he had made and which he could not now unmake...12 percent dealt with other people's criticism of him... and 10 percent were worries about his future health, only about half of which he could do anything about in the present. In all, he concluded that only about eight percent of his worries over the previous year had been legitimate. Christians pray to God for many things and reasons. He is always there to listen. Do we really spend time praying about the things that concern us the most? It s our suggestion that we convert worry time into prayer time. It is not only a more productive activity, but a healthier and more enjoyable one. A problem not worth praying about isn't worth worrying about. We closed with the CWF Benediction. The next meeting will be at the home of Marlene Risinger at 6:30 pm. on October 10th.

Thanks to Support Team Meeting on October 14 th after fellowship All the supporters of our Shoe Drive! We couldn t do it without your support! And we are at it again! Judy Tyler for all her hard work on the October Craft and Bake Sale. All those who have or will be donating baked goods for the October Craft and Bake Sale. George Risinger for bringing the invitation for WCC to respond to the needs of Marshalltown and to all those who have helped to collect and distribute very needed supplies for those affected by the Marshalltown tornado. Julie Cornelius for keeping in touch with those in need. Marlene Risinger and Vicki Teas for keeping our church so tastefully and beautifully decorated! To all who stepped up to assist with Sunday School needs! From Mary and I, as well as all my family, a humble and appreciative "thank you" is given to you, our church family, for the prayers and kindnesses shown in the death of my father. Your ongoing prayers will be treasured. May God bless you all. Between the Covers will meet at 5:00 pm on Monday, October 29 th to review The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye by David Lagercrantz (nonfiction). See you there! Your giving is important to the future ministry of God s church in this place. Please give generously and with a cheerful heart. June July August Receipts $ $ 15, Expenses $ $ 10, Difference $ ( ) $ 4, Money available for expenses $32, $36,578.25

Adult Sunday School 10/03 Dolores Betzold 10/08 Joyce Wilson 10/10 Ric MacRae 10/10 Ruth Sindt 10/22 George Risinger 10/23 Joyce Wasson 10/24 Cathy Conklin 10/28 Kathy McGowan 10/30 Jack Harris 10/28 Roberta & Dennis Petty We have had an excellent start to the Living The Questions series for Adult Sunday School. This video series provides an introduction to the conversations around faith and the life of the church. Provided is an open welcome, freedom to share thoughts and ideas and questions without judgement, and a shared realization we are all on this journey together. If you haven't been a part feel free to jump in at any time! There is always room for more! Topics for the next few weeks are: Sept. 23 "Thinking Theologically." Sept. 30 "Stories of Creation." Oct. 07 "Lives of Jesus." Oct. 14 "A Passion for Christ: Paul the Apostle." Oct. 21 "Out Into The World." Oct. 28 "Restoring Relationships." Marshalltown Relief Members of Marshalltown Central Christian Church shared the story of the tornado that struck that town at the end of July at the All-Congregational Gathering The tornado struck some of the poorest parts of Marshalltown where many people did not have insurance. To compound the suffering of Marshalltown, the tornado also struck the two largest employers in town which will be shut down for an extended period of time. So not only did people lose homes and possessions, but also their source of income. Over the last several Sundays, the members of WCC have been very generous in making donations of basic supplies and personal care items along with monetary donations that will be used for gift certificates. It is very heart warming to see so many people contribute to help our brothers and sisters who re in need due to a natural disaster. Thank you all so much for reaching out to the people in need as Christ calls us. - George Risinger

Julie Cornelius is our Visiting Pastor. Please let her know if you are hospitalized or would like her to make a visit. Her phone contact is The CWF will be meeting Oct. 3 at 1:00 pm in fellowship hall. All ladies are welcome to attend. At September s meeting, a lunch was enjoyed and plans were made for the coming year. We will be discussing those plans again in more detail. It was also decided that we will be selling at the craft show in October. Please come join us on October 3 rd for a lesson from Julie Cornelius and fellowship. The Support Team has approved a plan to send out your donation statements semi-annually (June and December) instead of quarterly. If anyone wants a quarterly statement, you may contact Beckie Myers and she can or mail one to you. Notes From The September Executive Team Meeting The following is a summary of the meeting. If a full report is desired please let Lanita or Pastor Loren know and a copy will be provided. The meeting was called to order and prayer was offered up. Pastor Julie was asked to assure our homebound members have a copy of our new directory. Judy Tyler has all stalls rented for the Oct. 6 craft sale. We will set up after fellowship Sept. 30. Vendors will be coming Thursday and Friday (4 th and 5 th ) to set up. It was decided to hold a Flea Market in our parking lot on June 2, 2019 from 10 to 4. The request for Communications/Social Media Committee volunteers in August to help Linda Foltz has not generated anyone. Judy volunteered mainly to help with pictures. Ryan will get the Search Committee together and choose three members to serve staggered terms on the Pastoral Relations Committee as directed in the WCC By- Laws Article IV, Section 2.4. Regarding new business, we are now conducting a smaller September to November Shoe Drive. The summer shoe drive was a huge success. Ryan reported that the Stewardship Drive will start in October. He will have a meeting like he did last year prior to the drive. The drive will have a theme What Shall We Bring? The Pledge cards will allow contributors to choose where they want their monies to be directed. Pastor suggested the Board read Real Good Church by Molly Phinney Baskette. Ryan will order enough books for the Board, each of us can repay Ryan. We will set a time to discuss the book together. Among the support teams, the Finance Team reviewed the August financials. Following conversations with families, certain memorial funds were reallocated. Ryan suggested Lisa Hiatt put together a plan for adding color to outside planting next spring; possibly including a Prayer Garden. Her expertise in this area should be encouraged. The Property Team reported that the water bill is back to normal. The two southeast doors will be installed the second week of October. Service Master cleaned carpets and did a god job. The bill has been paid by WOW & General Fund. Rosalie P. suggested that families adopt a room and maintain it. Pastor Julie suggested that the playground equipment be stained before winter to protect it. There was discussion about painting and choosing colors. More discussion will follow. The Hospitality Team reported BBQ fund raiser Sept. 9 th was a big success bringing in $254 of good-will donations. Thank-you Marc for cooking the Pork Loin. October 21 will be pastor appreciation for Loren and Julie. In the Pastor s Report it was suggested we budget for Social Media as WCC can get good exposure on Facebook using the boost feature. Pastor suggested this is a good time to consider putting together a job description, contract and budget for Pastor Julie. She does so much for our church family. We need to lift her up. A more complete report was submitted which includes being elected to the Region s Operations Council and participation in the Commissioned Ministry and other activities. The next meeting is October 14. Pastor closed with a prayer. Respectfully Submitted, Linda O Hair, Recording Secretary, Waukee Christian Church
