Stepping Up our Ministry Spring is just around the corner and for many that means NEW SHOES! WCC is collecting gently used shoes to distribute overseas to those in need (Haiti, Honduras, and Tanzania). This will be our major mission and fundraiser this year. The shoes provide free inventory to people starting businesses in the developing world, and we will receive.40 cents for every pound we collect. Please save your old shoes... ask your neighbors to donate theirs... and your kids and grandkids. Mention it to your hairstylist and coworkers. Post flyers in your apartment complex or at your gym. Ask them to set out a box where people can drop off their shoes. You can bring the donated shoes to the church or let someone from the church know and we will pick them up. We will accept ANY size and ANY style. All that is required is that there is a sole and a mate. We hope to collect a ton of shoes - literally! This is a great way to be in ministry and help support our budget. May God bless our efforts! Stewardship Team Smile! We ve had several new members and friends join us for the worship and work of Waukee Christian Church. What a blessing! So, it s time to update our church directory. Lisa Hiatt has volunteered to be our photographer and she will be taking pictures one evening in May the 13 th and one Sunday after worship the 18th. Please sign up to be a part of the new directory. A sign-up sheet is located in Fellowship Hall or you can call the office to reserve your time.

A Holy Land Trip is being planned for November 3rd, Talk to Pastor Sue or Jerry if you are interested in this life-changing experience! May 3 rd Clean Up Day May 7 th CWF 9:00 am at Cozy Cafe May 11 th Mother s Day Adult Education Hour: Discussion of movie God s Not Dead May 14 th WOW 6:30 pm May 18 th Board Meeting 6:30 pm May 25 th Memorial Dedications May 26 th Office closed Throughout my childhood, I had always assumed God, like Jesus, was a man. The Lord s Prayer taught me to say Our Father. And all the ministers I knew were men and weren t they the closest people to God? Then, one day, I was driving along and read a Volkswagen bumper sticker: Trust in God She will provide. My immediate reaction was that God had somehow been diminished, even insulted. So I dismissed it. Later, during my ministry studies, I was shocked to learn that the Bible uses many feminine images for God! So I couldn t ignore it anymore. God is bigger than I had imagined. Imagine that! How does your understanding of God change with these images: a nursing mother (Num. 11:12); a woman in labor (Isa 42:14); a seamstress (Neh. 9:21); a midwife (Ps 22:9-10, Isa. 66:9); a woman making bread (Lk. 13: 18-21); a woman seeking a lost coin (Lk. 15: 8-10); a hen protecting her chicks (Ps. 17: 8, Isa. 31:5); a mother bear protecting her cubs (Hos. 13: 8)? A female image of God is especially meaningful for us as we celebrate our mothers this month. I remember my mom s strict dress code for school. As the bell bottoms frayed, so did her nerves. One day she came home early to find me changing out of the hippie clothes I had worn that day. I tried to tell her that what I wore had nothing to do with her. She didn t believe me. God, who transcends all labels, loves me enough to give me a way of living that will bring peace and compassion. Too often, I find myself resisting God s plan for my life. Too often, my relationship with God resembles my relationship with my mom. I come to church on Sunday dressed in my finest to praise God. Then, on Monday, I change into my frayed self and hope God doesn t see. I love the Mother-God who loves me enough to care what I walk around the world in. Celebrate your mom and God this Mother s Day by putting on your finest self. She ll love it! Blessings, Pastor Sue T Avenue, P.O. Box 278 Phone: WaukeeChristianChurch.com

s Knit Wits meet at the church every Tuesday morning at 9:30 am. They make many beautiful items and welcome anyone to join their fun group. Cash donations or donations of 3-4 skeins of yarn of one color are also needed. The next CWF Meeting at 9:00 am on May 7 th will be held at The Cozy Café in Waukee. All ladies are welcome to attend. Between The Covers book club meets on the last Monday of the month at 6 pm to discuss the book of the month and enjoy table fellowship. If you can join us, great! The May book is The Language of Flowers (fiction) by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. Shawn O Hern, a friend of the Keller family, has been deployed to Kosovo. His new mailing address is: SPC Shawn O Hern APO AE A basket has been placed in Fellowship Hall to collect items to send to the troops stationed in Kosovo. A list of items requested by the troops is on the table next to the collection basket. Boxes will be sent periodically. If you would like more suggestions or information, please contact the Keller family. Thank for your support! Church buildings are important for several reasons. They provide: Tools for gospel work (Evangelism, Discipleship, Fellowship, Ministry/Missions and Worship) Public facilities which are used by many different people for various purposes Great investment of our Lord s money and a statement about our commitment to God s work But buildings also require upkeep on parking lots, roofs, and other fixtures. We are currently seeking volunteers to create a Long-Range Facility Planning Committee. Such a committee will help us answer questions like, What do we need? Once that question is answered, plans will be made on how to meet those needs. Please prayerfully consider participating and contact Pastor Sue if you feel called to serve. On Palm Sunday, Robin and Alayna Younger came forward to become a part of Waukee Christian Church. Robin transferred her membership from Redfield Christian Church. Alayna gave her profession of faith and will begin baptism classes this summer. Zoey Koch also came forward and gave her profession of faith. Zoey was baptized by her grandfather, Rev. Gary Sneller, on Easter Sunday at Central Christian Church in Boone. Be sure to get to know Robin and Alayna and tell Zoey congratulations! Please remember to return your puzzle piece to the office. We would like to gift the puzzle picture of our church to the youth Sunday school.

Ruby Murray has moved to Park Centre, 500 First St. North in Newton, IA When was the last time that you hand-wrote a note to someone to thank them for something that they did for you? Or sent someone a note telling them that you are praying for them? It s easier than you think! There are a variety of cards located on the desk in Fellowship Hall. Feel free to take and use a card to encourage or celebrate with someone who has been lifted up in prayer time. You will also find several invitations. Use these to invite someone to worship at Waukee Christian Church. You can help restock the supply by donating cards and/or stamps. Just leave them on the desk. With Kindest Regards, This summer, beginning May 28 th, a group of Waukee CC friends will be gathering to refresh themselves on God s Word. On the 28 th, we ll meet at 5:30 p.m. at Mickey s Irish Pub in Waukee for a snapshot of the coming week s scripture. We ll stay about an hour and we ll limit ourselves to one pint. Of course, you can also order a soda. So come and join the lively discussion. (We ll be using the Serendipity Bible series.) 2014 Family Fun Fair Planning Mark your calendars, the 2014 Family Fun Fair will be held on Sunday, August 3 at the church. This is a community-wide event that our church family organizes to raise awareness and help fill the shelves at the Waukee Food Pantry. It is time to start thinking about the 2014 event and we are looking for volunteers to help with the planning and organizing. Please share your time and talent with this community outreach event, we need you! Please contact Pastor Sue with any questions or to volunteer. The May WOW meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 14 at Rev. home, 3405 NE Briarwood Drive, in Ankeny, Iowa. This meeting will begin at 6:00 pm and will be a planning meeting and a potluck. Please bring a dish to share and your ideas on what events and activities WOW will work on for the coming year. This fellowship and service group is open to all women, no invitation required! Look for information about carpooling closer to the meeting! Please consider including a gift to Waukee Christian Church in your will. Planned giving is a generous and effective way of ensuring the future vibrancy of Waukee Christian Church. You can make a planned gift to the church in a number of taxbeneficial ways.

Garden Party Success! The Garden Party sponsored by our very own WOW (Women of Waukee) was a huge success. The brunch was delicious (who would have expected otherwise?) and Tim Rundlett from Earl May answered many, many questions! A great time was had by all! Many of you requested the recipe for the quiche so here it is! Enjoy the pictures below that were taken by Lisa Hiatt. No Crust Quiche 1 doz eggs or 6 Egg Beaters 2 small onions ground or chopped very small 1 pkg Jimmy Dean sausage, fried and drained 1 8 oz. pkg shredded Mozzarella cheese 1 8 oz. pkg shredded Colby cheese 8-10 strips of bacon, fried and crumbled Optional: 1 pkg frozen chopped spinach, thawed. After it is thawed, press to remove as much juice as possible. Butter two 8 pie tins or small casserole dishes. Mix ingredients together and place all ingredients in the pans and bake at 350 degrees for minutes. Sprinkle a little cheese on top. No need to add salt and pepper people can season to taste. Also, have used mild cheddar or whatever cheese I have at home. You can t go wrong here! Makes two pies
