The guru sits in silence for a long time. Finally, the monk says, Excuse me. But what shall I do? The guru replies, I have just shown you. What I really like best about this story is not the wise counsel of the guru. What interests me is the monk s question: What shall I do? I can see his eager face, and I smile to think how many times I ve asked that same question. What is the way out of this mess? What will give me peace? What will end this pain? In my times On-Call at the hospital, I often feel as if I m not doing enough. I hold a hand I stand for a really long time in silence. I would rather get someone a drink of water or a warm blanket. Perhaps I could take someone to supper. Or I could give directions to the Cath Lab. At least then I would feel productive. Standing in silence in the face of pain and death feels so unproductive. And yet, when we place ourselves in the presence of God and allow our words to all run out, we are released from the burden of having to know of having all the answers of being right. There is no spiritual right in the midst of trauma. What is left when there are no words? When there is only the silence of the cross and the soundless breaking of bread? Truth. The truth of grief, yes; but also the truth of compassion and love. When I m On-Call, I spend quite a bit of my time listening to people. And I m often asked, What shall I do? I have no magic formula. There is no secret ritual. But listening is a first step. Each day we get a letter personally addressed to us. It arrives on our breath and reads: Get up. Give thanks. Listen. Love. I m still addicted to doing. But I m getting weary of the price: the anxiety, the restlessness, the distortion. Maybe the guru was on to something. This Lenten season I invite us all to make space for receiving rather than accomplishing. May you hear the pulse of beauty just beneath the surface of things. And may you hear God say, Don t interfere. I ve got this covered. Stand mute. Try not to fume. God is holding the bread. Blessings, Pastor Sue T Avenue, P.O. Box 278 Phone:

Cash donations or donations of 3-4 skeins of yarn of one color are also needed. We have some interest in a group getting together to see the new movie, Noah which releases the end of March. We will to pick a date in April for those who are interested in a viewing at Wynnsong Theater. Please let Pastor Sue know if you are interested or indicate your interest in the pew registry. Stay tuned for more information! Smile! Plans are underway to print an updated Church Directory. We will be using the Church Windows software to compile the directory. Please let the office know of any change in address or contact information. Articles for the April Newsletter are due by March 19 th! Conference Center Work Day is coordinating a work day at the Regional Conference Center on March 29 th. We are hopeful that the weather will improve by then so that we can do some outdoor work on the cabins and there is still more inside work to be done as well. We will car pool from Waukee and leave about 8 am. The camp furnishes a lunch (free will offering) and we may be asked to bring a dish or two to share. Any men who are interested can contact on his cell at or at home at You do not need to have any particular carpentry skills to be of service and the times we have gone in the past have been very rewarding for those who have been a part of it. It will be good to see what progress has been made over the winter months since we were last there in early fall.
4 WCC has begun a new Calling Ministry to make personal calls on visitors. This ministry is VITAL to our growth. Studies have shown that visitors return more often to churches after receiving a personal visit within the first 48 hours of worship. What can you do to help? Volunteer to join this Ministry and make a call on visitors. What do you need? All that s needed is a friendly smile. How does it work? Call the office or let Pastor Sue know if you would be willing to make calls. She can give you a brief training. One of the main hopes raised by this congregation is that it will grow. That can happen, but it will take your support. Be a part of this important ministry. Remember: People don t join a friendly church they join a church where they can make friends! Be that friend! A Holy Land Trip is being planned for November 3rd, Talk to Pastor Sue or Jerry if you are interested in this life-changing experience!
