Sunday School resumes on September 13 th. Here are times and locations: Adult - Chalice Room (formerly the Choir room) at 9 a.m. Pre-K & Kindergarten - Busy Bee s room at 9 a.m. 1 st - 4 th grades - Gathering room after fellowship time (approx. 11:15 a.m.) 5 th - 8 th grades - Chalice room after fellowship time (approx. 11:15 a.m.) High School - Prayer room at 9 a.m. For the elementary and middle schools, Sunday School and Youth Group are now combined. Thanks to Jerry Woods, Nancy, Shari Burgus, Suzanne Koch, and Pastor Sue for leading classes. Here s to another great year of learning and fun! I m often told by churchy-type people that one thing they don t have is a handle on the Bible. They don t know the stories well. They wish they did, but they don t. And the statement is often accompanied by a sort of wistfulness a wishing it wasn t so a longing for a deeper connection to the roots of faith. And, frankly, worship hasn t been very helpful. For over 40 years, the sermon has been focused around the Revised Common Lectionary: a 3-year cycle of scripture readings tied to the Church Year. In this system, history and chronology are secondary to the flow of the Church Year, especially with regard to the Old Testament. Those readings move back and forth from week to week. In 2010, a new lectionary was launched: The Narrative Lectionary. The goal of the NL is to help people grow in their knowledge and understanding of scripture. The NL 4- year cycle focuses on one story each week. On September 13 th we ll start in Genesis and work our way through Old Testament stories until Advent when we will share the story of the Jesus birth. As the New Year begins, we ll move to the New Testament. This year s stories will be from Mark as we make our way Easter. Here are some of the themes we will be sharing: I Know You by Name (Sept. 13 Oct 4) Constant Yet Changing God (Nov 15 22) Free at Last! Free at Last! (Oct 11 Nov 8) The Way of Peace (Nov 29 Dec 27) We will worship at Centennial Park on Sept. 6 th at 9 a.m. Bring a lawn chair if you like. In the event of rain, we will gather in Fellowship Hall. Along the way, we ll be providing some creative ways to tell our own stories as we continue to be People of the Table: Connecting, Growing, and Honoring God s love. Blessings Pastor Sue T Avenue P.O. 2 All who helped with our 3 rd Annual Family Fun Fair! Lots of laughter - cupcakes - children - balloons - and FUN! Those who helped serve the compassion meal or offered comfort in grief Leadership who prepared our new governing documents and presented them to the congregation Suzanne and Clint for hosting the Youth Group cook out Sophia and Jim for appearing in the church s Regional Video Everyone who attended Theology on Tap this summer Thank you note from Brent Vernon: This is just a quick note to say a HUGE THANK YOU for taking such good care of me while I was in Des Moines. What a joy to meet you! The food, fellowship, & accommodations were wonderful. I look forward to the next time our paths cross. Blessings Brent Vernon We now have a key box mounted on the outside of the south side door. The box opens with a code and has a key inside that unlocks all doors. Active members can call the office or Pastor Sue to get the code. The old keys no longer work. If you received a new key, you can return it to the office. On August 9 th, this congregation adopted a new set of governing documents. The previous Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws were no longer consistent with who we are and how function as church. Many of the things in the new documents simply outline how we are already doing things. So you may not notice big changes. However there are a couple of things we do want you to notice. The first change is in how the Board is structured. Our new structure is organized around our mission statement. This makes sense because everything we do should flow out of how God is calling us to live into the world. We have three Ministry Teams. Each Team focuses on one area of the mission: Connecting, Growing, and Honoring. We also have a third team, Supporting, that supports the work of the Ministry Teams. Another change is that Elders and Diaconate have been removed from the governance structure. Elder tasks, however, continue. People still need to be called on, prayed for, and felt included in the life of the church. And, of course, as people of the table, the opportunity to pray over the elements continues each Sunday. What does this mean? It s really important that each of the three Ministry Teams have a Co-Chair. Ministry Teams meet as needed, but at least quarterly. And Co-Chairs do not have to attend regular Board meetings. Please pray about how God might be nudging you to help. It also means that the elders tasks are open to anyone who feels God calling them to serve. Critical here is a willingness for serving at the table during communion. How can you help? The Time and Talent Form process of answering God s call in your life is more important than ever. If you feel God calling you to mission, or stewardship, or fellowship, or prayer, please indicate those items on your Time and Talent Form. Even if you have completed a Time and Talent Form in the past, please fill out a new form. The forms have changed along with our new structure, and there are new opportunities to serve. So it s really important to turn in your form. The new Time and Talent Forms will be available in October during the Stewardship drive. Connecting Ministry Team (Meets quarterly or as needed): Fellowship Hospitality Missions Growing Ministry Team (Meets quarterly or as needed): Growing Out Growing Up Honoring Ministries (Meets quarterly or as needed): Growing Through Sabbath Keeping Supporting Ministry Team (Executive Committee): (Meets monthly) Finance Property Personnel PRC
Sue MacRae and Kathy Dean worked at the Waukee Area Christian Services free community garden in June. They were there an hour or so and got a lot accomplished or so the people who were helped said. They had a good time planting onions, weeding, and putting down newspaper & grass clippings to control the weeds (that was actually the hardest part). They said they really need help, so if you have a spare hour or two and like to get your hands dirty, please volunteer! Most people immediately think of money when they hear the word stewardship. But stewardship is so much bigger than finances. It s really a heart issue - a longing to respond to God s gift. Thankfulness In everything give thanks; for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus (I Thessalonians 5:18). A steward s heart is a thankful heart. Thoughts Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have (Hebrews 13:5). Contentment isn t getting what you want it s wanting what you have. Tune out our culture s relentless pursuit of more and learn to live simply. Trust Instruct those who are rich in this present world not... to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy (I Timothy 6:17). Move your trust from your bank account to the God who knows your every need. Consider your gift in light of God s gift for you. Annual Stewardship Drive is September 20 th - October 11 th. Between the Covers book club will meet at 6:00 pm on September 28 th to review Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife (fiction/humorous) by Linda Bardoll. See you there! Dedication of Gifts On Sunday, September 20 th, we will dedicate the gifts of a Baby Grand Piano and two new stained glass windows. During worship, our musicians, Sophia Ahmad and John Hemlich will bless the congregation with a special concert, and Pastor Sue will explain the meaning behind the images and colors of the stained glass windows. The Jan Jensen and Don Dowell memorials made possible these beautiful additions to our worship space. We are so grateful to the faithful saints of this congregation who continue to bless us. As you can see, we have one more window in the sanctuary to complete. If you would like to make a donation to finish this project, please mark your contribution: stained glass window fund.
Waukee Christian Services News Back-to-School Health Fair a Success! The annual Health Fair held August 3, blessed 65 students a record year. For the past 9 years the Waukee Area Christian Free Clinic has been hosting the event offering free school and sports physicals along with many other services/resources. Planning is already underway for next year. If you would like to be involved contact WACS at info@waukeechrristianservices.org. We were blessed with three new members by baptism on July 26 th! Make sure you welcome Tasha Schnell, Austin Younger and Ximen Markway. Yeah! for School Supplies!! Over 200 students were ready for school this year because of all the donations received. One little girl was so happy to receive a pink backpack, that she gave it a big hug! There is joy in the receiving and joy in the giving. Thanks for supporting this important ministry. C.W.F. and WoW will host a joint potluck supper on Wednesday, September 2 nd at 6:30 pm. Please bring a dish to share. Cecile Lewis will be giving a presentation about her trip to Australia.
Angels Walk Among Us! (printed on request) Pastor Julie Cornelius nephew, Mark Johnston, has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. His treatment includes trips to Chicago every three weeks. Many in the community have expressed a desire to help the Johnston family with the mounting medical bills, transportation costs, and other expenses. A benefit will be held at Panorama High School on September 20 th. The event includes a meal, auction and other activities. Accounts are set up at Panora State Bank, Farmers State Bank and Guthrie County State Bank. If you would like to make a donation, please feel free to make checks payable to the Mark Johnston Benefit Fund. Please keep Mark and his family in your prayers during their journey of healing. Please keep the families of Pat Carpe, Eva Jean Wright, Dave Sapp, and David Reed in your prayers as they grieve the loss of their loved ones. How many of you know an angel? How many of you one two? How many of you knew Pat Carpe? Then you did know an angel! Pat was one of the greatest Christians I ve ever known in my 90 years of living here, there and everywhere! She was a happy person, always smiling, and always willing to help do anything that needed to be done. She worked diligently for family, friends and neighbors. Pat loved her family! How happy we all were for Pat & Jack when they were blessed to have Stacy and Brian brought into their lives! Joy!! I remember when Pat s father and mother had a car accident frightening and her father didn t live long but right away, Pat and Mary were there helping her dear mother (a tiny little lady whom we all loved)! She loved her daughters and we all loved her! I remember Brian when you were so very, very ill. Our hearts were all concerned and how thankful we were when God brought your health back and blessed your mom, dad, Stacy and all of us. Scary! Pat & Jack worked tirelessly for our Waukee Christian Church! They served on many committees including the Building Committee for our new church building. We sanded pews, sanded doors, painted Sunday School rooms, etc. etc. Hours of planning and we all rejoiced when our church was built and finished! What fun we did have! We all felt so blessed to be working together on such a worthwhile project! Our lives are all so blessed because Pat was our caring dedicated Christian friend for up to 50 years!! Surely Pat lived the great example that Jesus taught us all to love one another as I have loved you. An angel among us she was that! Thank you, God, for putting her in our lives. We will miss you, Pat! In Christian Love, Your friend, Lois Stone Bannister P.S. Look around you do you see an angel? Could YOU be an angel?
As I watched the children during the Family Fun Fair I wondered, What is really going on here? They were fascinated by the Ventriloquist. They stood in line to have their faces painted. They shot water balloons at Goliath. And they ate more cupcakes than allowed by the Daily Nutritional Guidelines. Why had they come? To be entertained? To learn a Bible story? What is going on here? It occurred to me they came, and we invited them, to be blessed. Life is hard - full of danger. And because it s hard, we want our children to feel blessed. A blessing won't save them from danger, but it may save them in danger. We want them to know that they are precious to God and held in love. And along the way, between the sugar high and the water balloons, we were blessed as well. Thanks It s not to all too who late of to you get helped a Flat bless Jesus a child to take at this along year s on your Family Fun Fair. travels this summer.
