3 From the Pastors Pen: Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! It is January 2017and a brand new year lays ahead with all of the excitement and promise of an unopened gift. When I think of all we have accomplished since July 1, 2016, it makes me smile to think of the endless possibilities ahead in our new year! We will be doing a capital campaign so that we can raise the money for the land purchase, building new Sunday School classes and putting in a commercial kitchen. I will be taking the leadership team on a leadership retreat in January. We will continue prayer breakfast on Thursday mornings in Higher Grounds Café all are welcome. This time of fellowship is the perfect midweek boost for your spirit. Most of you know I will be going to Israel in February and will gladly carry your prayers with me to leave at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. I will also take the time to pray that God will answer your prayers and I will pray for Chestnut Grove while I am there. Use a 5X7 sheet of paper and write your prayers on both sides and then roll it up like a scroll and we will provide a place to collect them in the sanctuary. I will put the prayers in baggies and take them with me when I go. I must say Christmas Eve was magnificent! So was Christmas Day! My heart is not into undressing the sanctuary and taking down the tree, but we will be doing just that on January 8, 2017 following the service. Come and hang out and fellowship with us as we prepare for a new season. I would like to thank the following people for their tremendous service to the church in 2016: Jeff Newhard Ad Council Chair, Don Jaquette Pastor Parish Chair, Dennis Bush Treasurer, Kathy Bennett Finance Chair, Sherry Spencer Lay Annual Conference, Jack McCoy Lay Leader, Bruce Trostle Trustee Chair, Carol Mowery Secretary. The 2017 Leadership Team will be published soon. I would also like to thank the Worship Team, the Grow Team, the Choir, the Ladies Ministries, the Men s Ministry, the Prayer Chain, our Historian, all Committee members and every TEACHER! Many thanks for all who made the cantata so successful! It was AWESOME! Thank you to Carolyn and Wendy and Laurie and Joe you four are pillars of our amazing worship services where we worship Almighty GOD the maker of heaven and earth and give thanks!!!! God s blessings to the Word Way participants and their wonderful leader and teacher the church lady, Sherry Spencer. Many thanks for the leadership provided by Denise Newhard on many of our projects. Not only did they make an impact you made us look good! We are off to a great start in a new beginning and I believe God, Jesus is alive and well and the Holy Spirit is moving in this place. As we move into the future we will let God lead and we will use the Bible as our guide. We will believe and we will take a position of action as the hands and feet and encouragement of Jesus. Being a Christian is not a passive state of being. If you love God, give Him no less than your best. It may cost you but the rewards are greater than you can comprehend. I thank God for the gift of each of you and pray health and life over you in Jesus name. Blessings Pastor Hildebrand Page 3
4 OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE Cards of Caring A few seconds of your time can bring cheer to someone. Remember to look on the table at the rear of the Sanctuary for cards to sign. Nursing Home & In-home visits - If you would enjoy going along with Pastor Hildebrand to visit individuals in nursing homes or some of the homebound members of our congregation, please let Pastor Hildebrand or Carol Mowery know! Children s Message - Would you like to share a lesson or a story with the children sometime? Why not volunteer to give the Children s Message some Sunday? If you need ideas, Pastor Hildebrand has resources to help you. The children would love to hear from you! Talk to Pastor Hildebrand to volunteer! Volunteer with Hospice: If you might be interested, Pastor Hildebrand has information about this opportunity in the office. VISIT US ON THE WEB! One of the ways we can help spread the Good News of Jesus Christ is by using social media, such as Facebook and the Internet. Chestnut Grove UMC has been taking advantage of these opportunities to help spread the word about our missions and ministries. But we need your help! Have you checked our website lately? If you want to know what's happening at CGUMC, visit It's a great way to keep up to date - especially if you miss a service.. Peter Thornburgh s Aluminum Tab Recycling Program - Another mission opportunity for Chestnut Grove to support is Peter s special project. The Ronald McDonald House of Hershey is collecting the aluminum tabs. The aluminum tabs are sold to a local recycling company; proceeds help with daily operating expenses at the House. The generous amount of tabs collected has been very beneficial to the House and the families, averaging $1,000 monthly just from these tiny tabs! Let s help Peter in this cause by collecting the tabs and placing them in the marked container in the back of the sanctuary. Let Peter know you are helping him with his cause! We're also on Facebook. Search for Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church, Dillsburg, PA. Be sure to "like" our posts and "share." You'll help spread the news of our activities, such as the upcoming Christmas Tea. Any questions, please see Joe Bennett or jbennett727@gmail.com. Page 4
5 THE WORD WAY Many members of the Chestnut Grove congregation have committed to read a chapter a day from the Bible using a program called the Word Way. It takes 3 1/4 years to read the bible in its entirety one chapter a day, and we are just over 100 days into the program. We also gather weekly to discuss what we have learned through our reading and delve deeper as we seek answers to the questions our reading brings up. If you have ever started reading the Bible at Genesis planning to read straight through it and gave up when you got to Numbers, you will find this reading schedule enables you to get further and understand more! It isn t too late to join us as we read. You can also join us on Sunday mornings during the Sunday School hour or Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. for our discussion time. As Sherry Spencer shared with us: I want to tell anybody who has fallen behind to not get discouraged. Jump back in. If you fell out of the habit of coming to class, please don t hesitate to come back. Thank you to Pastor Hildebrand for bringing this program to Chestnut Grove. Thank you to all who are participating who freely share your insights. Here s to the next 100 days. See Sherry for more information or to sign up! THURSDAY MORNING PRAYER Join us at 7 a.m. in the Higher Grounds Café for coffee (or tea!), a brief devotional, and a time of prayer for our church, our community, and our country. If you have a prayer need you would like us to cover in prayer but can t join us, let Pastor Hildebrand know. FIRST FRIDAY LUNCHEON The 1st Friday Luncheons are back! The luncheons will be held at 11 a.m. on the 1st Friday of each month. Contact Sue Mowery if you have any questions. OFFERING ENVELOPES for 2017 have been placed on the table at the rear of the sanctuary for those who used envelopes last year. Envelopes are not required but do make our record keeping easier and more accurate. If you haven t had envelopes before and would like to start using them, please contact Carol Mowery. HELP WANTED Tithing is more than putting your envelope in the offering plate every week. As Christians, we are to offer our Treasure, Time and Talent. As the New Year beginss, schedules are being made for our servant leaders. Please read on, and prayerfully consider. CHILDREN S CHURCH Do you have a gift with children? Every week two leaders leave the worship service to deliver a message to the children. The messages are pre-prepared ahead of time. As a new volunteer, you would be partnered with a seasoned volunteer to teach these youngsters. If you have any interest in this, please see Denise Newhard. If you decide to be in the rotation, your commitment would be one lesson every 4 to 6 weeks. TELLERS - Every week, our offering is counted by two volunteers. This takes about 20 minutes. We separate cash and checks and categorize the monies as per the instructions of the giver. If you decide to be in the rotation, your commitment would be once every 4 to 6 weeks. See Tammy Strayer for further questions. HOSPITALITY - Are you a very social person? We have multiple opportunities for you. Would you like to work in the Higher Grounds Café? I hear lots of laughter coming out of there. Would you like to be a greeter in the morning? Talk to Shirley Jones or Andy Mowery if this peaks your interest. Are you curious, but still hesitant? You could pop in on any one of these activities and see how it goes, chat with the current volunteers. Page 5
6 If you bought some dried apples after the apple pie sale, here is a recipe that you can use them in. If you haven t gotten your dried apples yet, you can find them in the Higher Grounds Café! Turkey Hill Snitz and Knepp Ingredients For the snitz 1 1/2 pounds of cured ham or 1 ham hock 2 cups dried apples 2 Tbsp. brown sugar For the knepp or dumplings 2 cups flour 3 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 egg, beaten 2 Tbsp. butter 1/3 to 1/2 cup milk Directions "Snitz" is the Pennsylvania Dutch word for apples. "Knepp" is the word for flour dumplings. Combined with ham, it makes a great main dish. Snitz: Wash dried apples, cover with water and soak overnight. In the morning, cover ham with cold water and cook slowly for three hours. Add apples, water, and brown sugar, then allow to cook for one more hour. Knepp: Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in beaten egg and melted butter. Add milk until batter is stiff. Drop batter by spoonfuls into boiling ham and apples. Cover pan tightly and cook dumplings 10 to 12 minutes. Do not lift cover until ready to serve. Servings: 8 Page 6
