1 Begins at 9:00 a.m. Through September 6 th! Welcome to new members Jim and Rosalie Pfeifer and Jack and Mary Lou Harris, who all became members by transfer. The Pfeifer s joined on April 19 th and the Harris joined on June 21 st. Congratulations to Austin Younger, Tasha Schnell, and Ximen Markway for their decision to be baptized on July 26th and on their new status as members of Waukee Christian Church! We are blessed to have each of you! When I first stepped foot into this office, trailing behind me were several boxes of file folders: ideas that someone had shared with me programs I had purchased, illustrations jokes studies and a few things I am not able to place no matter how hard I rack my brain. Most of these things had worked before in another congregation and might work again. And they all came with a promise that they would work if implemented correctly. I needed every piece of paper in every single file folder. It was my stuff. That first week I tucked all my files neatly inside the already full file cabinet bulging with this church s old agendas, minutes, records, and a variety of clippings, projects, and great ideas. That was almost three years ago now. Since then I have continued to file more and more paper into that already crowded space. What s a pastor to do? Well, In July I had some time to organize the Pastor s Study so I tackled the file cabinets. I gleaned, sorted, and reminisced. But mostly I discarded and moved on. I can t tell you how much paper I recycled, but a sorter somewhere is wondering how a paper on Emergent Christianity came to rest beside bulletin samples from Psychologists used to talk about the brain as a sort of filing cabinet. The brain organizes and stores information and memories into categories so that we can simply go to the right file drawer and pull up what we need. Take one look at the file cabinets in my office and it s clear why I have trouble remembering things. I think some housecleaning is in order. Perhaps your life has become a little too full. Maybe you re holding on to stuff that s not useful anymore. Or maybe you bought into something once, a long time ago, because it promised to work - except it s not practical for where you are or who you ve become. Is it time to declutter? Hear these words from Luke 10: few things are needed--or indeed only one. I hold on to many things when a few or only one is needed. My file cabinets are neat and organized, and it feels like a new beginning. What will you let go of to give your life space for that One Thing? Is today a new beginning for you? 2 The Family Fun Fair opens at 3 p.m. on August 2 nd with a puppet show, for all ages. After, everyone is invited into Fellowship Hall for Cupcake Wars. Local bakers are invited to submit their cupcakes in two divisions: Best Taste and Best Decorated. The Cupcake Wars entry fee is 2 dozen cupcakes. Of course, it only makes sense to serve all those delicious cupcakes! So, after the winners are announced, we will all enjoy cake and ice cream before heading outside for some old fashioned yard games. Be sure to invite your friends and come out for all the festivities. The puppet show is for young and old alike. Contact Linda Wilcox or Jerry Woods for more information. Members are invited to stay after worship on August 9 th to approve revisions to the Governing Documents and affirm the church s new missional structure. You may go on vacation during the summer months, but the church stays open and expenses continue. Thank you for keeping up your pledge during the summer months. 3 Peace Cranes The church is invited to an ancient spiritual practice: origami. At first glance, paper folding would seem to be more of a craft than a spiritual practice. But when you look deeper, you will find beauty, creativity, order, intricacies, symbolism, and patience. As church, we will be folding peace cranes to use in our worship space. Each crane will hold the name of a member of the church and that name will be prayed for as the crane is folded. In the end we will have a visual symbol of prayer. Please join in making peace cranes so we might fill our worship with prayer. If you already know how to make a peace crane, great! If not, visit with Pastor Sue to get started. There have been a lot of Flat Jesus sightings on social media lately! You never know where God will show up. As we travel this summer, remember to snap a picture of Flat Jesus and post it on our web site or Facebook page. You can also put a pin in the map in Fellowship Hall of where you've been as a visual reminder of how far we reach Outside the Walls. Help spread the word that God and God's church is on the move! BIKE NIGHT Covenant Christian Church in Urbandale has invited Waukee Christian Church members to join them on their Wednesday Night Bike Rides. They meet at the Waukee Trail Head at 6:00 pm and then take off from there. Somewhere along the way, they stop for a short devotional of some kind or to read poetry. This would be a great way to take time for yourself and enjoy the company of fellow Christians while getting in some good exercise! Theology on Tap will meet at a new time every Wednesday in August. We will meet at 6 p.m. at Rookies Bar & Grill. The group is studying Ephesians. Come late leave early all are welcome!

Everyone who helped collect shoes at the Des Moines Color Run and to all who have contributed or helped to transport or bag shoes To the people who are faithful through leadership on the church Board To Lorrie Grandgenett for organizing our hospitality and to those who contribute weekly to make this a welcoming space As church & as Christians, we can get into routines or even solid ruts as we live out our faith. When this happens, we can lose sight of how important it is to be the Body of Christ in this world. We can forget that Jesus called us to act & speak boldly for those who are not given a chair at the table. We can forget how refreshing & inspiring it was when our founders of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) suggested the simple idea that all are welcome at the Communion Table! Come bring a group to the Disciples Leadership Conference on August 15 th at the Christian Conference Center. You will be inspired! 5 Is it a bird? A plane? No.it is Waukee Christian Church s YOUTH GROUP! This group of jumping for joy youth traveled to Kansas City from July 9-12 to take part in mission work. The group consisted of Sam, Gavin, Austin, Tasha, Zoey, Ximen, Max and Alice. Cathy Phillips, Clint Koch and Suzanne Koch chaperoned. This trip was not for the fainthearted you had to like baseball, water gun fights, junk food and pop. But in addition to all of the fun, the youth volunteered at two mission organizations. The first organization was Hillcrest Thrift Shop. Proceeds from the thrift store fund an organization that provides individuals with a 90 day rebound program. The youth organized clothes and priced/tagged items for resale. The second organization was Harvester. This organization packages food pantry items It s not too late to get a Flat Jesus to take along on your travels this summer. It is really fun to see where Flat Jesus is making appearances. You can pick A big one shout-out up at church goes to Lee s or from Summit the church office. When you take pictures with Flat Jesus, you can post those pictures on our facebook page at eechristianchurch for distribution. The youth had a contest to see who could package the most potatoes.i loved seeing how the dynamic changed from an individual contest to teams (with a mix of boys and girls on each team!). Christian Church for hosting us. The church was beautiful and the facilities fantastic. We attended the contemporary worship service on Sunday and enjoyed noticing the differences between their and our service. I anticipate BIG things from this group in the upcoming year. Keep an eye out for us at church and in the community. Support a Healthy Waukee! You can help ensure a healthy Waukee by supporting the Waukee Free Clinic. The clinics a non-profit outreach that serves the health needs of the uninsured and under insured in our community. Their mission is to show Jesus love as they promote physical, emotional, and spiritual health and healing. The Clinic offers Immunizations Lead Testing Hair cuts Health Insurance info, including Hawk-I applications Family Community Agency referrals as needed Employment Physicals High Blood Pressure Testing Chronic Disease Management PLUS FUN STUFF for kids! Well Child Exams Patient Assistance Program Enrollment Illness/Minor Injury Care Sports/School Physicals Diabetes Blood Glucose Testing Dental & Vision screenings Leave a monetary gift in any amount can at the table in Fellowship Hall. After you give, please pin a cut out on the board. Let's fill the board, and Waukee, with healthy people!

6 In addition to the great Family Fun Fair support of WACS, here are a few more volunteer opportunities to benefit the organization s ministry. The Community Garden is always in need of maintenance including planting, weeding, and harvesting. An invitation has been extended for each of the member churches to adopt a Sunday a month to help care for the garden. Tools and Master Gardener will be on hand Sunday evenings from 6-8 p.m. Please contact Sue MacRae at ASAP if you d be interested in helping June 28, July 26, and August 23. WACS School Supply Drive will be taking place during July. Let s see if we can Fill the Backpacks by bringing school supplies each Sunday in July. See the list at the left for suggestions on what to donate. The Back-to-School Health Fair will be held Aug.3 rd.
