The parents and godparents, by baptizing the child, are affirming before the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit that they are going to raise the child as an Orthodox Christian. Ideally, the parents are to be active Orthodox Christians that regularly come to Divine Liturgy and live the Orthodox Faith as sincerely as possible. The godparents must be active Orthodox Christians to sponsor a child at a baptism because they can t stand before the Holy Trinity and represent a child if they don t live the Orthodox Christian Faith in their own life. In essence, one cannot give what one doesn t live by and possess. Baptism is a second chance to begin to live life in a better manner. Baptism is to be born again through a moral conversion of life. Baptism is a visible sign of repentance and a change of mind. Because baptism is also called Holy Illumination, it brings a person out of the darkness of sin and into the light of Christ, and as such, the role of the godparent is critical and comes with expectations. Every parent and godparent must be a person of repentance because they will be held accountable at their Particular Judgment and Last Judgment for how well they lived the Orthodox Christian life and imparted the Orthodox Faith to their child or godchild. While being a parent and a godparent is a great honor, it is one that comes with great responsibilities once a child is baptized. St. Paul writes in his letter to the Galatians Ch. 3:26-29, For you are all the children of God by faith, in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized in Christ, have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek: there is neither bond nor free: there is neither male nor female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you be Christ s, then you are the seed of Abraham, heirs according to the promise. Because of this, Baptism and the other Sacraments are never obligatory cultural rites as God doesn t demand our love or obedience. The Sacraments as experienced on earth are our initiations and beginnings in becoming citizens of the Holy Trinity s Kingdom of Love, Paradise, and Eternity. We must always remember that our earthly life is no more than a blink of an eye when compared to the time we will spend experiencing our eternal one. If we want to be with God in our eternal life we must begin by being with Him in our earthly one. No human is exempted from this universal law of God s. Thus it is essential that parents, godparents, and sponsors lead an Orthodox Christian life steeped in the Sacraments and daily prayer. If we don t make a sincere and concerted effort to nourish the seeds of sacramental grace planted inside of ourselves, and inside those, we are responsible for, the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Matrimony will be imparted with little or no efficacy. To expect to receive God s grace by attending Divine Liturgy a few times a year and receiving the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of God in Holy Communion is spiritually naive. Do we think we can acquire God s grace without personal sacrifice or ascesis for Him? Do we have meaningful relationships with anyone else by seeing them only a few times a year? Generally not, because our external relationships are a reflection of our internal ones. We can t know the Divine Person who loves us more than any other person by visiting and encountering Him infrequently. Relationships require work. If we have no sacrificial love on our part we can t have a deep relationship with God because all meaningful relationships require sacrifice. God is the Supreme Person and we are called to have a relationship with Him through encountering Him in His Body the Church. Every Sunday is the Lord s Day for the celebration of His Divine Liturgy in order to feed us, His children, with eternal life through the Eucharist. He

Christ died on the Cross so we could have Holy Communion. To consistently place the things of the world before worshipping Christ and receiving Him in the Eucharist on Sunday mornings is a form of idolatry in that earthly cares are reverenced and admired over Almighty God. If we desire to be a godparent or sponsor our responsibilities and requirements go far beyond buying candles, cross, oil, and other sacramental accouterments. They go far beyond the requirements found in the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the local Parish By-Laws. Of course, those obligations must be fulfilled but the greater obligation of the parent, godparent, and sponsor is in the keeping and living out of the Law of God. St. John of Kronstadt boldly warns all Orthodox Christians in My Life in Christ: Our life is child s play, only not innocent, but sinful, because, with a strong mind, and with the knowledge of the purpose of our life, we neglect this purpose and occupy ourselves with frivolous, purposeless matters. And thus our life is childish, unpardonable play we amuse ourselves with our own selves, making idols out of ourselves, before which we bow down, and before which we expect others to bow down. Who can sufficiently describe and deplore our accursedness, our great, enormous vanity, the great misery into which we voluntarily throw ourselves? What answer shall we give to our immortal King, Christ our God, Who shall come again in the glory of His Father to judge both the living and the dead, to declare the secret thoughts of all hearts, and receive from us our answer for every word and deed. O, woe, woe, woe to us who bear the name of Christ, but have none of the spirits of Christ in us; who bear the name of Christ, but do not follow the teaching of the Gospel! Woe to us who neglect so great salvation! Woe to us who love the present fleeting, deceptive life, and neglect the inheritance of the life that follows after the death of our corruptible body beyond this carnal veil! If one doesn t come to Sunday Divine Liturgy regularly and wants to be a sponsor or godparent it is my hope that he or she will be open to make a change in their life for the better and listen to Christ when He proclaims, Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand (Mt. 3:2). That his or her high calling to serve a fellow Christian as a sponsor or godparent will be lived out to the best of their ability. That they can begin to take baby steps by promising to come to Divine Liturgy a minimum of once a month unless work, school, or health forbids this. That the aspiring sponsor or godparent will happily commit to supporting Christ s Holy Body the Church through stewardship. Above all else previously stated, why make this promise and commitment? In the Divine Liturgy, we encounter the greatest love story ever told namely the God-Man crucified and humiliated so that we might behold and partake of His broken Body and poured forth Blood. It is in His Divine Liturgy where Christ gifts us the totality of Himself: Body, Blood, Soul, Divinity, and Divine Love. Once we understand this, we can never stop regularly coming to the Lord s Supper. In truth, we will never cease coming to the Sunday Eucharist. Not because our conscience won t let us, but because our hearts won t! Love/Αγάπη, Fr. 3 From Parish Council From Parish Council President: Dear Parish Community, On behalf of the Parish Council, I would like to thank the entire parish community for all the hard work and support that went into making our 60th Anniversary Greek Festival a memorable one. To the co-chairs, David and Andrea Casey, Bob Feldmann, Nikki Burns and Bill and Connie Yorgen, a mere thank you seems inadequate. Your time, hard work, commitment and perseverance was evident throughout the weekend. Thank you, Fr. Joseph, for your spiritual leadership and ongoing support of all parish endeavors, especially this year s 60th Anniversary Greek Festival. Thank you to all parishioners and friends who have worked tirelessly over the past several months, baking, cooking, attending festival meetings and planning for our 60th Anniversary festival. Without all the volunteers, parishioners, family and friends, we could not continue to hold such an amazing event which shares with the Dayton community, our food, customs, culture and religion. This year s festival was challenged with three straight days of rain. We all know we cannot change the weather, but we would like to extend a huge thank you to all who showed up, helped, and worked so hard during such a difficult time. Many times throughout the weekend, as we thanked patrons for supporting our festival, they would voice their thanks to us for hosting them at this year s Greek Festival, even though the weather conditions were far from ideal. As we all reflect on this year s festival, let s remember to be productive and positive in our comments and remember we must thank God for all he has provided for us. Ultimately, the festival we work so hard to put on each year is because we all share the love of our Church and God. In Christ, Maria Abboud President, Parish Council From the Parish Council As the Parish Council, we wanted to inform everyone that the parish bylaws will be adhered to for the good order of the Church. In following our parish bylaws only Orthodox Christians who are in good standing and financial stewards of the parish are afforded the privilege to participate in any Assembly and the Sacraments of the Church. Per our parish bylaws, a parishioner is an individual who has been baptized and/or chrismated Orthodox and receives the Sacraments regularly in our parish. Parishioners are required to also be stewards of the parish. 3 A steward of the parish is someone who has made a financial commitment to our parish. Individuals can be stewards of our parish, but if not Orthodox Christians they cannot participate in the Sacraments of the Church and are not afforded the privilege of voting and addressing the body at any Assembly meetings. According to the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, our Annunciation Parish By-Laws and the Canons of our Holy Orthodox Church, an individual must meet all of the following criteria in order to vote and address the body at all Assembly meetings: 1. An individual must be an Orthodox Christian. 2. An individual must regularly participate in the Sacraments of the Church. 3. An individual must have made a stewardship pledge and fulfilled it for the previous year. 4. An individual must have made a stewardship pledge and made a payment toward it in the current year. The cutoff date to have fulfilled all the above criteria in order to vote and participate in the Fall General Assembly on October 28, will be October 1. Those individuals who qualify as parishioners in good standing will be listed on the General Assembly roster. We are thankful to Jesus Christ for all of you! Sincerely, Parish Council Parish Council Nominations The Nominating Committee is seeking parishioners interested in serving on Parish Council for a three-year term beginning January Elections will be held in the fall on a date following the Fall General Assembly meeting. 4 News and Notes In Appreciation To the Parish Community, There are never enough ways to say thank you when festival is over. We literally weathered the weekend and should all feel proud. Many volunteers were outside for hours in the rain, wrapped in coats and scarves and never gave in. The Dayton community came in spite of the weather and said over and over again Rain or shine, I would never miss a Greek Festival. This festival is an important part of Dayton and will continue to be so for many years to come. Our deepest thanks to the festival booth chairs and to all volunteers and friends of volunteers. Kudos to Andrew and Dessine Ziehler and their team for the success of carry out and bulk food sales; to the GOYANS in the Baklava Sundae booth for their idea to take the sale of sundaes inside; to the Beer Wagon team for taking trays of draft beer to all areas of the festival Saturday night and Sunday and to all of you for initiating creative ideas to boost sales, we thank you. Thank you to Connie Yorgen for managing the post festival sales of food and pastries; and Libby Stamas for her tireless hours managing the 4 supply room.
