1 THE TRUE VINE The Monthly Newsletter of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Dayton, Ohio JUNE 2017 VOLUME 1 ISSUE 6 Sacraments and Responsibility INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Sacraments and Responsibility 1 Parish Registry 3 Liturgical Schedule 3 Ministries and Organizations 4 Faith in Action 5 News and Notes 6 Stewardship 8 Calendar 15 The True Vine is a monthly publication with special editions of The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 500 Belmonte Park North Dayton, OH Office Hours Mon. Fri. 9 a.m. 5 a.m. Tel.: Baptism as a Sacrament deepens and grows inside a Christian s soul through living a life steeped in the Church from cradle to grave. Baptism anticipates a victory that is yet to come, and a victory that must be struggled to attain. Baptism does not guarantee salvation for anyone. Nor does baptism transform us once and for all at the moment it occurs. Only a seed is planted in baptism, and a new Church member is initiated. If this seed is not watered, and if the weeds of sin are not pulled, and if a Godly life is not cultivated, the newly germinated life will wither away. If baptism is disgraced and neglected it simply doesn't work. Baptism is a Sacrament that confers an uncreated grace on humans through the direct action of the Holy Trinity. The utterly transcendent and uncreated grace of God becomes perfectly immanent in baptism because the Father wants us to commune with Him in our hearts. Not only baptism, but all of the Sacraments are meant to purify our hearts in order to commune with God in this most sacred of sanctuaries. If a child is baptized and made a Christian, but if the child isn t brought to Church consistently, the newly initiated child will have a spiritual life devoid of regular sacramental grace, and the parents will be remiss in their sacred duty to raise the child as a Christian. The Sacrament of matrimony unites a man and woman together through the foundation of God s common love for them. A sacramental marriage is meant to bring husband and wife so intimately together that they become one. Through this oneness they die to themselves. They sacrifice by loving their spouse more than they love themselves. Sacramental marriage literally is a Cross, for in the Cross two pieces of wood are joined together, and they become one. Couples graced with the Sacrament of matrimony have the vocation to save each another s souls through living a virtuous life in the Church. If a Sacramental marriage is not continually blessed by the couple regularly attending Divine Liturgy the husband and wife will lose the uncreated grace they were initially blessed with. Grace requires cooperation on our part. The Sacraments are never obligatory cultural rites because God has gifted humanity with the self determination to love, reject, or neglect Him. All cultures, religions, and civilizations have taught and affirmed the self evident truth that free love of another person is never compelled or forced. The Sacraments as experienced on earth are only our first steps in becoming citizens of the Holy Trinity s Kingdom of Love, Paradise, and Eternity. We must always remember that our earthly life is no more than a blink of an eye when compared to the time we will spend experiencing our eternal one. If we want to be with God in our eternal life we must begin by being with Him in our earthly one. No human is exempted from this universal law of God s. (Sacraments continued on next page)

2 THE TRUE VINE JUNE 2017 Page 2 (Sacraments continued from page 1) If we don t make a sincere and concerted effort to nourish the seeds of uncreated grace planted inside of ourselves, and inside those we are responsible for, the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Matrimony will be imparted to no avail. To expect to receive God s uncreated grace by attending Church a few times a year, or once a month, and receiving the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of God in Holy Communion is naive. Do we think we can fool God? Do we have meaningful relationships with anyone else by seeing them only a few times a year or once a month? Of course not because our external relationships are a reflection of our internal ones. We can t know the Person who loves us more than any other person by visiting Him infrequently. Relationships require work. If we have no sacrificial love on our part we can t have a relationship with God. All meaningful relationships require sacrifice. God is the Supreme Person and we can only have a relationship with Him through encountering Him in His Body the Church. Every Sunday is the Lord s Day for the celebration of His Divine Liturgy in order to feed us, His children, with eternal life through the Eucharist. It is God alone who calls us to worship Him on this day. The Lord established His One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church to save His children through His life giving Sacraments, and not to inconvenience us. The greatest love story ever told is in the Holy Communion offered to us each and every Sunday. Once we understand this we can never leave the Church. We will never cease coming to Church. Not because the Church and Christ won t let us, but because our hearts won t let us. MEMORY ETERNAL Our deepest and heartfelt sympathies are extended to George Gianopulos and the Gianopulos family in the loss of +Jodie Gianopulos. May her memory be eternal! Our sympathies are also extended to the Elias family in the loss of +George Elias. May his memory be eternal! FR. JOSEPH NOTES: Dear Parish Faithful, Summer is not a time off from one s Sunday obligation to attend Divine Liturgy. It is absolutely essential for spiritual growth to regularly attend church on Sunday. Don't come occasionally to church. Don't just come when you feel like it. Make regular church attendance a priority and let it be a good habit that becomes a part of who you are. Nothing does more for your spiritual health than regularly being in church. Being in a church service is irreplaceable. It is a moment in time and once it's gone, it's gone forever. There will always be competition for your time and other things that you could do on a Sunday. The Holy Trinity created us to worship Him. That s the primary reason we exist. This is why the Church was established and this is what God s people will do when Jesus returns and restores our fallen world. Revelation 22:3 gives a picture of this: No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship Him. The central aspect of our corporate worship is the reception of the Eucharist. To not come to God s temple, to not worship Him, and to not receive His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity is a spiritual poverty and tragedy. When a professing Christian misses church they are missing God s prescribed process for spiritual growth through Holy Communion with Him. The only legitimate excuse for missing Sunday Divine Liturgy is work or sicknesses. All other absences are sinful in that they miss the mark in how God calls us to worship Him every Sunday. As your priest I in no way pass judgment on you. I only ask that you search the depth of your hearts and do what is right. Our lives are so short, and they are gifted to us lovingly by our Lord. What we do in this earthly temporal realm has a direct correlation to what we will experience in the eternal spiritual realm. Jesus wants us here on Sunday mornings to serve and worship Him. He loves us so much that He has given Himself to us through His Divine Liturgy. This practice of the Orthodox Christian assembly dates from the beginnings of the apostolic age. St. Paul s letter to the Hebrews in verse 10:25 reminds the faithful "not to neglect to meet together, as is the habit of some, but to encourage one another. We cannot pray at home as at church, where there is a great multitude of us, where exclamations are cried out to the Lord as from one great heart, and where there is something more: the union of minds, the accord of souls, the bond of charity, and the prayers of all united and offered up to our Most High God through His priest. With Love in Christ, Father Joseph WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28 TH FEAST OF ST'S. PETER AND PAUL We will be celebrating the Feast of St's. Peter and Paul at the St. Paul OCA parish on Wednesday, June 28 at 6:00 pm with a Vesperal Divine Liturgy. The parish is located at 4451 Wagner Rd. 8 THE TRUE VINE JUNE 2017 Page Stewardship Program As the Father has sent me, so I send you Generous For Any Reason by Jim Langendorf What is a gift? The legal thumbnail is a voluntary transfer of something of value from one to another without an expectation of compensation. Legal-shmegal. A gift tells someone you care about and support them. When given in that spirit, your gift tells someone that you want them to succeed. We all give like that to politicians and worthy causes, to birthday kids and graduates, and to newlyweds. If we can put a few dollars in the pockets of those we want to succeed, and claim a small part in their successes, then we feel successful too. Our gift comes back to us in the success of others. Other gifts are given as gratitude for prior support or service. Sometimes a gift is a relationship starter the first offering in a business relationship. It tells someone we believe in them and will support them. Of course a gift can sometimes be employed to cement an apology for stepping out of line. Am I right guys? No doubt that here at our church, our reasons for giving run the full gamut. But whatever the reason for it, you surely know your gift will be appreciated and well used. Imagine the comforting warmth and the refreshing coolness during services. The HVAC system we all gave a little toward buying. We didn t have to give; the church council would have bought it. But we knew it would make us and those after us more comfortable and stronger. Now, each of us claims a small part in that comfort. You know how special it is to be part of the tight Annunciation family. And supporting family is one of the strongest of the Greek traditions. Our gifts to the Church support our family. Our contributions, small or large, added together make our family stronger. Giving will never go out of style and no act of kindness goes unnoticed. Ever. Support your family. Take some credit for the success. Get your name seen and recognized as a supporter of the church. You will always have enough when you give some of what you have, and a gift, freely given, always comes back. ~ 2017 ~ The list on pages 8 and 9 reflect those parishioners who have made their 2017 Stewardship Pledge as of May 15, We invite you to join with them and support, joyously, the ministries of the Church. This year the games are being held in Cincinnati July 17-22, On June 20 from 5-8pm, we will have an evening at Skyline Chili on Kingsridge Drive to raise funds to sponsor local veterans participating in the games. Veterans compete in the following events plus many others: Archery, Basketball, Boccia, Bowling, Field Events, Power Soccer, Quad Rugby, Swimming, Trapshooting and Weightlifting. The Paralyzed Veterans and VA are committed to improving the quality of life for veterans with disabilities and fostering better health through sports competition. Since the Games began in 1981, thousands of disabled veterans have enjoyed the health benefits provided by sports participation and have revitalized the spirit of competition within themselves. Please support June s CCM by donating money in the Red Box in the church entryway, attending the evening at Skyline Chili where a portion of the proceeds will support our veterans at these games, or sending a check to church made out to Philoptochos with CCM in the memo line. These veterans gave a lot for us, so let s support them at the 37 th Wheelchair Games. Cindy Keilholz and Nikki Burns
