Andy Moulas Why Should I as a Christian Partake of the Sacrament of Confession? Quite often there are two emotions that motivate humans: fear or love. While fear and love are not mutually exclusive they often cancel one another out in our quest for moral and spiritual perfection. In the Book of Proverbs 1:7 we read, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. This is true. It is often fear that can bring a person to compunction or realization of one s guilt due to moral failure. It s what we do with the fear, compunction, and guilt that matters. Do we ignore it, waller in it and enjoy it, or move beyond it with a certain hope and resolution to change who we are for the better through the wisdom of God and the grace of the Church s sacraments? Fear can only carry us so far in our quest for salvation as Christians though. Why? Because we were made by Love (God), made in Love (the Love shared between the Trinitarian Godhead), and made for Love (to experience uncreated Trinitarian Love and the love of one another). The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit possess perfect personhood. As such, He created mankind to share with us His uncreated and eternal Personal Love that has forever existed. As humans, we were created in the image and likeness of God to share in the uncreated and eternal Love of the Godhead and to become by grace what the Holy Trinity is by nature namely eternal and divine, but only by grace. Since God is the Supreme loving Person we as humans were created to love Him as He loves us. While we can certainly fear God initially, we must move beyond a relationship based on fear and enter into a new and renewed one where the foundational shift we make is to love Him who loves us. Change requires grace. Grace is found in the sacraments. The sacraments heal us of our infirmities if we cooperate with God s grace present within them. Why do we need the sacraments? for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Sin is a sickness inside of us. Sin causes us not to live in harmony and perfect communion with our Creator. Hence the sacraments are to become the grace-filled therapies that facilitate us being made whole again. They can help bring us back to our pure baptismal condition spiritually. We can become like Adam and Eve before the fall if we cooperate with God s grace in all the sacraments we partake of. The greatest of all the sacraments when it comes to healing our souls is confession. Confession has been practiced since the earliest days of the Church. There is a reference to it in Sacred Scripture. Christ said to His disciples after the Resurrection, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained (John 20:22-24). St. James in his epistle also said, Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working (James 5:6). Confession is about God s love and healing in our lives. While we may have a fear of the unknown, fear is never a rational reason to keep us from coming to the sacrament of confession. We know we are all sinners. We know we all need healing. As such, there is no excuse for not coming to receive God s guaranteed love, healing, and forgiveness. It changes us for the better. I have personally witnessed in parishes where the faithful regularly go to confession amazing relations among them. In those communities where confession is practiced by many there, one will find a greater abundance of God s grace. Confession changes how we treat one another. Three reasons for this is that those who got to the sacrament of confession are fostering a spirit of personal humility, they are accepting God s forgiveness, and they are leaving confession justified and without guilt. It takes humility to go to confession. The reasons we go to a priest or bishop for confession are multiple. First is that the priest or bishop are there to help and not judge. Just as we go

This is what priests and bishops are trained to do. They are therapists for our souls. When we have disordered our minds and souls by sin and bad habits the priest or bishop can offer corresponding spiritual therapies to help heal us. When we go to the priest or bishop and audibly confess our sins we own them. Anyone can confess to God in private, but when we humble ourselves and admit our failures before another person Christ can increase in us and our brokenness can decrease (John 3:30). Confession allows us to accept God s guarantee of forgiveness. Christ commanded us to go to confession and He guaranteed us that whatever the priest or bishop forgives is forgiven and whatever we personally retain in our souls by not going to confession is not forgiven (John 20:22-24). Not going to confession is like being in the worst of storms where waves are surging and crashing all around us. Then all at once, a guaranteed lifeline is thrown to save us but we don t accept it while knowing that we will almost certainly perish without it. Christ gave us confession out of His love and mercy for us. And Christ guarantees that He will not retain any sin we confess. Christ is not a penal Judge but a therapeutic One who will give us every last chance before bodily death in order to receive His guaranteed forgiveness through confession. What our Savior will never do is violate our free will and force us to be saved and forgiven. Confession justifies us and allows us to no longer be guilt-ridden. Confession is a second baptism. This sacrament is often rightly called the Baptism of Tears for good reason. So many of us carry around unbelievable pain and emotional scars from our moral failures. These wounds when not healed fester in us and can often lead to greater problems. When we go to the sacrament of confession all our sins and moral failures are brought into the Light of Christ. These things can no longer fester in the darkness of our minds and hearts once we confess them. I can t tell you how many people have come to this sacrament filled with years of pain and suffering and left with their lives changed because they knew they were guaranteed forgiveness by our Lord Jesus Christ. Further, an ontological change occurred in them that they recognized. Please come to confession. Don t fear God s forgiveness. Love His forgiveness. All of us as Orthodox Christians when we go to confession are falling into the arms of Christ and resting our heads on His breast. Confession transforms us into the prodigal sons and daughters Christ has ordained us to be. St. Chrysostom says, Be ashamed when you sin, don t be ashamed when you repent [To repent means to have a change of heart and mind. It is not simply a feeling of sorrow but a spiritual growth away from evil and death. It s a turning to God and life]. Sin is the wound and repentance is the medicine. Sin is followed by shame; repentance is followed by boldness [Boldness means to beg God for undeserved mercy]. Satan has overturned this order and given boldness to sin and shame to repentance (Homily 8). Lastly, might we love ourselves and our loved ones enough to encounter the love and forgiveness of God in confession in order to love God, ourselves and others just as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit love us.
