Crisis of many natures political, social, family, youth, environmental, economic! Crisis of institutions and values. Wars, refugees, famine, poverty, unemployment, terrorism, and the ongoing ecological destruction of our planet: This is the image of humanity in a global scale. How will we exit this deep crisis that torments our era? In Chinese, the word crisis is written with the same ideogram that is used for the word opportunity. And in the Greek, the word crisis also includes in its meaning, energy, which derives from the verb to judge and refers to the noetic energy that decides or chooses. Therefore the crisis that we endure could carry a positive effect if we use it as an opportunity for repentance, an opportunity for choosing to correct the harmful decisions we have made as individuals and as a society, an opportunity to change our way of thinking and acting in our daily lives. At the dawn of the New Year, Christ calls us to pay attention to one word one word that carries the weight of eternity: Repent! This word was first heard in the desert of the Jordan and in Galilee of the Nations. It was first spoken by the Forerunner John and by the God-man Jesus. Over the centuries, it was passed on countless times within the Church from generation to generation. And thus it reached us. Sisters and Brothers, what is most necessary in order to overcome the personal and societal crisis of our day is for us to proclaim and take to heart the message of repentance. Repent! Both John the Baptist and Christ began their preaching with the same word, putting the key of repentance into the door of salvation. The proclamation, repent, governs the Gospel. The whole Gospel can be described as grace from the side of God and repentance from the side of humanity; and where grace and repentance meet, salvation occurs. The entire proclamation of Christ and His Church is included and recapitulated in repentance. Christ began his preaching with repentance and He finished it with repentance. At the beginning of His preaching He said: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand! (Mt. 4:17) And at the end of His preaching, His last command to the apostles after his resurrection was to preach repentance and remission of sins in His name to all nations (Lk 24:47). Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand! The Kingdom of Heaven is, of course, the Church, both in its origin and in its mission. As Christ Himself said, My kingdom is not of this world. (Jn 18:36). He meant that the Church, as authority, is spiritual insofar as it derives from heaven. And as salvation, it is a journey with heaven as its destination. With repentance, fallen humanity gains not just the paradise that had been lost, but heaven as well. At this point, let us hear from the greatest ecclesiastical orator of all time, St. John Chrysostom, who explains of the meaning of repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand! with the following astonishing teaching: God does not promise to put us in paradise, but to take us up into heaven; He did not preach the kingdom of paradise but the kingdom of heaven. Repent not because the kingdom of paradise has arrived, but because of the heavenly kingdom s arrival. You lost paradise; but God, showing His philanthropy, gave you heaven. Though you lost paradise, God opened heaven for you. You were condemned to temporary suffering, but were then honored with eternal life. He commanded the earth to grow thorns and thistles, but enabled your heart to grow the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Do you see how the benefit is greater than the loss? The gain far outweighs the suffering! But what am I saying, St. John Chrysostom asks, and then replies, God created man out of dust and water, and placed him in Paradise. [And after his Fall] God did not recreate man of earth and water, but of Water and the Spirit. And God did not again promise him paradise, but instead (Crisis continued on next page)
2 THE TRUE VINE MAY 2017 Page 2 (Crisis continued from page 1) the Heavenly Kingdom. (John Chrysostom, Homily 8 On Genesis, PG 54, 614) If we do not understand the meaning of repentance, it is impossible to understand the essence of the Gospel. Repentance is the first thing needed, as beginning and as door to the road of salvation. Without repentance there is no salvation. This is because repentance means to change one s way of thinking. It is to realize that you are not moving in the right direction and, subsequently, to change course. It is to abandon your sinful habits and establish a new order and governing principle in your life. To repent is to make a courageous decision and to seek liberation from the vices and passions that enslave you and humiliate your personality. It is to hate your sinful self and to love God. It is to cease trusting your own mind with absolute confidence and, instead, to open your eyes to the light of faith. It is to weep and mourn for your sins and to ask for God s mercy. Repentance is all this, like preparing for Christ to come and dwell within us. The global crisis that afflicts us cannot be overcome without repentance. If, for instance, political and spiritual leaders will not repent for their mistakes, we will not see better days. If parents and teachers will not repent for their mistakes, we will not have better children in our society. If those who greedily exploit the natural environment do not repent, our planet will not be saved from ecological destruction. If those who behave selfishly toward their neighbor do not repent, we will not enjoy the divine gifts of love, peace and social justice. If we do not repent for our egoism, which causes hostilities and divisions, the unity of Christians will never become a reality. God, by the prophet Isaiah, instructs us even today: Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease your wicked ways. Learn to do good, Seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. And with this repentance and your good decisions come and let us to discuss together, said the LORD. (cf. Is 1:16-18) Now at the beginning of the New Year, let us have repent! as a foundation and governing principle in our life, so that the grace of Jesus Christ comes to us for our salvation. Only in this way will all the social problems that afflict our country and the global community be solved. May the New Year, 2017, be blessed, peaceful, and marked by fewer personal and social problems, to the glory of the Holy Trinity. With much love, + Metropolitan Ambrosios Fr. 8 THE TRUE VINE MAY 2017 Page Stewardship Program As the Father has sent me, so I send you Generous For Any Reason by Jim Langendorf What is a gift? The legal thumbnail is a voluntary transfer of something of value from one to another without an expectation of compensation. Legal-shmegal. A gift tells someone you care about and support them. When given in that spirit, your gift tells someone that you want them to succeed. We all give like that to politicians and worthy causes, to birthday kids and graduates, and to newlyweds. If we can put a few dollars in the pockets of those we want to succeed, and claim a small part in their successes, then we feel successful too. Our gift comes back to us in the success of others. Other gifts are given as gratitude for prior support or service. Sometimes a gift is a relationship starter the first offering in a business relationship. It tells someone we believe in them and will support them. Of course a gift can sometimes be employed to cement an apology for stepping out of line. Am I right guys? No doubt that here at our church, our reasons for giving run the full gamut. But whatever the reason for it, you surely know your gift will be appreciated and well used. Imagine the comforting warmth and the refreshing coolness during services. The HVAC system we all gave a little toward buying. We didn t have to give; the church council would have bought it. But we knew it would make us and those after us more comfortable and stronger. Now, each of us claims a small part in that comfort. You know how special it is to be part of the tight Annunciation family. And supporting family is one of the strongest of the Greek traditions. Our gifts to the Church support our family. Our contributions, small or large, added together make our family stronger. Giving will never go out of style and no act of kindness goes unnoticed. Ever. Support your family. Take some credit for the success. Get your name seen and recognized as a supporter of the church. You will always have enough when you give some of what you have, and a gift, freely given, always comes back. Kalo Pascha. Jim Langendorf ~ 2017 ~ The list on pages 8 and 9 reflect those parishioners who have made their 2017 Stewardship Pledge as of April 15, We invite you to join with them and support, joyously, the ministries of the Church.
