3 MINISTRY NEWS 1. Today: LA Greek Festival 2. October 21: Saint Sophia Philoptochos General Assembly LIFE IN THE FAITH STUDY w/ Fr. John Bakas Increase your knowledge about our faith at our weekly Bible study class. You'll have a chance to ask Fr. John questions and engage in interesting discussions with your fellow parishioners in a casual setting. Everyone is welcome to attend every Tuesday at 11 am starting October 16 at the Huffington Center YOUNG ADULT BIBLE STUDY w/ Fr. Christopher Kolentsas Young Adult Bible Study open to the ages of thirty and under every Wednesday Evenings in the Huffington Center from 7:30 pm 8:30 pm. Please see schedule on calendar. 5 CHOIR MINISTRY NEWS As we start the new liturgical year, I would like to remind everyone that the choir is always looking for new people to join our ministry! Do you sing? Did you once sing in college or high school? Did you play an instrument? Do you find yourself singing along during liturgy? If you love to sing, we welcome you! Although there are a number of experienced singers who have committed to membership in the group, you do not necessarily have to be a trained singer or musician to sing with us. Our primary purpose for existence is spiritual we strive to glorify God with our melodic prayer. The choir at Saint Sophia is a ministry that has been a tradition that goes back prior to the opening of the cathedral in We continue this ministry tradition by singing at our Divine Liturgy every Sunday, Holy Week services, presenting an annual Christmas Concert (Dec. 2 this year!) and participating in special projects as they come up. But...I don t know Greek! While we are a Greek Orthodox Church, we sing at least two Liturgies a month completely in English and the music in Greek is also written in phonetics. 6 PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Ladies, you need to have your yearly checkup if you have not already done so, and a mammogram every year if you are over 40. Early detection plays a major role in treatment and survival rates. The Saint Sophia Philoptochos will once again be making a donation to the American Cancer Society on behalf of all women. We will have a table in the coffee hour on Sunday, October 14 to accept your donation to this most worthwhile cause. Cash or checks will be accepted. Checks should be made out to the Saint Sophia Philoptochos. We will take the total from all the checks plus make a donation from our chapter, and mail it to the American Cancer Society. Thank you! 7 PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS MEMBERSHIP If you have not yet paid your Philoptochos membership, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible BEFORE this year ends. This is a small way in which you could be involved to help our ministry grow. We need your support to continue our outreach to the needy and those less fortunate. We are trying to recruit 200 members and more! JOIN THE SAINT SOPHIA PHILOPTOCHOS SOCIETY and visit our table at Coffee Hour on Sundays to learn more about our organization and ministries. 10 SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS Reminder - Sunday School instruction begins when the students are dismissed from Holy Communion until approximately 12:15pm. It isn t too late to register your child/children for class. Please find Eleni Yokas upstairs in the Sunday School area and she will help you. 11 PHILOPTOCHOS VIP NEWS Upcoming Events: Sunday, November 4 Artoklasia for the VIP for the health of their members and families. Sunday, November 18 Thanksgiving Luncheon by the Philoptochos Tuesday, December 11 VIP will host their famous Christmas Luncheon at the Maniatakos Hall. We are expecting a famous visitor from the North. Chair is Vickie Deryiades, co-chair is Anne Dres. Further details to follow. Thank you all again for participating in the events.
