Fri. 9 a.m. 5 a.m. Tel.: THE MORALITY CRISIS OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION There is no way we as humanity can have universal moral absolutes without God or metaphysical values. If there is no God ethics become subjective. People can declare murder is wrong ad infinitum, but it is the existence of God, and metaphysical values, that make murder being wrong the moral absolute that it is. The modern world wants to be guided by feelings far too often. Feelings are not objective though. Increasingly more and more people want to feel what is right, but the Fathers of the Church universally condemn such insight into self as tragically and dare I say, sinfully flawed. Feelings by their very nature can t ever be substitutes for true critical thinking. Relativism can t ever be a substitute for moral absolutes. In a world where there is no objective value placed on anything, nothing is truly sacred. Further, if nothing explains everything, nothing is in reality explained. Life, in fact, becomes meaningless. It becomes meaningless because there is no objective purpose to it. If life is no longer sacred, and there is no objective purpose, any human being can do and believe anything they want because right and wrong are based on how one feels. The Church clearly teaches that absolute good and absolute evil exists. Without God and metaphysical ethics, there are no moral facts. There are simply moral opinions. Without God morality is merely subjective. Without God or metaphysics, morality loses its absoluteness and becomes relative. Moral relativism declares morality is not absolute but that it is only relative to an individual or society. Without God and metaphysical ethics good and evil are just another way of saying I like or I don t like. Without God, the statement murder is evil is the same as the statement I don t like murder. Many will argue that people won t murder because they themselves don t want to be murdered. An honest and objective reflection concerning Hitler, Stalin, and Mao proves this is illogical. The rejection of Judeo- Christian moral absolutes led to Communism murdering 100,000,000 people. I've often wondered why atheists, whose lives are ordered by empirical evidence and moral relativism, neglect the metaphysical nature of knowledge. For example, any sentence with the auxiliary verbs should or ought are metaphysical declarations. A parent takes care of her child is an empirical statement. A parent should take care of her child is a metaphysical one. It's metaphysical because science can't prove the "should" in the declaration as it s a moral judgment. Another example would be a murder of an innocent person. After all the forensic evidence and coroner s data have been observed all it points to is how a person was murdered. Yet as humans we know in the depth of our being that murder is objectively wrong and intrinsically evil. (Continued on page 2)

2 THE TRUE VINE JULY 2017 Page 2 (Continued from page 1) Empirical evidence has no judgment and thus universal moral absolutes aren t something we learn from our genes. If we as humans are committed to justice and equality democratically and under the law, we are strongly committed to a bi-dimensional universe of the physical and the metaphysical. We are committed to seen and unseen realms and realities. This is true because equality and justice are strictly metaphysical values. There is nothing scientific about them. We can t mine or purchase justice and equality. I was once with a group of twenty-somethings discussing morality. I posed a question: Does a human or animal life have greater value? The young adults debated back and forth. Some of them were even vegetarians because they believed killing animals is wrong. The debate was going strong so I decided to take it a little deeper and asked all gathered if abortion was wrong because some felt it was immoral to kill animals for food. One would think that if a person found it immoral to kill an animal for food they would see the murder of an innocent child in the womb as wrong as well. Well, I was wrong. At this point, the debate went from respectfully strong to fully ad hominem impassioned. In the end, God says humans are made in His image and likeness, and as such a human life has greater value, but with God removed from the debate ethics become subjective and moral certainty becomes a dead issue. In a recent New York Times article in March of 2015 a professor of philosophy wrote that the overwhelming majority of incoming freshman view moral claims as mere opinions, so while this debate was lively, its outcome was stark and not surprising. Secularism and relativism may be aspired towards as panaceas by western forms of governments, but in reality, they destabilize the very core foundational principles of Western civilization. In the absence of Godly common principles and moral absolutes, when there are no metaphysical values by which important social and ethical issues can be considered, the wider American cultural scene is rapidly becoming theologically and morally bankrupt. Not surprisingly the areas under greatest attack have been those which represent mediating structures between the individual and society as a whole--the family, personhood according to nature, when personhood begins and ends, the Church, and the school. In many ways, the history of the late twentieth century is the history of a struggle within Western culture as to whose values will shape mankind and the aforementioned mediating structures in the next century. Will it be God s Divine Law and Natural Law, or mankind s secular values devoid of God and metaphysical ethics which inform society? Will we live in a world devoid of objective and metaphysical reality? Again, relativism can t ever be a substitute for moral absolutes. In a world where there is no objective value placed on anything, nothing is truly sacred. Further, if nothing explains everything, nothing is in reality explained. Life, in fact, becomes meaningless. It becomes meaningless because there is no objective purpose to it. If life is no longer sacred, and there is no objective purpose, any human being can think and do anything they want because right and wrong are based on how one feels. This should cause you to pause as it does me. Either the cosmos and our lives were created with loving intention, and everything we do is in response to this, or we came from nothing, and when this is taken to its logical conclusion the void of nothingness ultimately and tragically results in meaninglessness. Even if I were an atheist I would want people to believe in God and metaphysical values because of the infinite beauty and hope they offer to a world that is rapidly devolving into subjective senselessness, social disorder, human quarrel, and prideful hypocrisy.

7 THE TRUE VINE JULY 2017 Page 7 JOY COURTYARD AND MEMORIAL GARDEN UPDATE What is going on with the courtyard project? Why has there been little construction progress? The contractor found that once the work began, a piece of the existing plan was not going to work. After several weeks of exhausting all measures, it was decided that we needed to alter that piece of the plan. The plan has been approved. The contractor will move forward as soon as they can, but we do not expect to be completed by the festival. The festival committee is aware of this, and has made alternate plans for outdoor seating. On behalf of the committee, I wanted to inform you of the delay. We want to make sure things are done the right way and we look forward to dedicating the Joy Courtyard and Memorial Garden as soon as we can. Thank you, Deb Pulos WELCOME NEW EMPLOYEE Michael Day is a new employee with the church maintenance staff. 8 THE TRUE VINE JULY 2017 Page Stewardship Program Those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing. (reprinted from an earlier issue) WHAT STEWARDSHIP MEANS TO ME by Jim Langendorf We give freely to those we love. And when we give to the church, we aren t giving to a priest or the building, but rather to the church family we care about our loved ones. Don t we all take great pleasure in the thought of giving? We don t give gifts with the expectation of getting something in return. No. Of course not. We do it because we feel joy when we make our family and friends happy. Isn t giving grand? One of my favorite sayings is Cast thy bread upon the waters, for you shall find it after many days That s from the Book of Ecclesiastes. It has passed my lips many times over the years. I have found it true, and have seen that the universe, God, fortune, whatever, rewards genuine generosity as a matter of course. For instance, in times of slow income or a depleted bank account, I give more away; to the church or to a charitable cause. And what invariably happens? More than I gave comes back! And usually quite quickly. It s as if the heavens recognize the difficulty of giving despite the real fear of not having enough, and they open up the spigots to return the favor. Recall those times when you were asked for or volunteered to help. Was there a downside to saying yes? No. You gave freely, made someone else s life easier or better, and you got to feel good about giving. It was a win-win every time, wasn t it? When we give to the church, we are giving to our friends and families. As I write a check or put in festival time, I think of Pete and Trina, Debbie and John, Helen, Tom, Dori, Angela, Nick, and Carrie, and of all the children that I can t believe are growing up so fast. I give to the church because they love the church and I love all of them. That s a win-win. That s stewardship. ~ 2017 ~ The list of Stewards reflects those who have made their 2017 Stewardship Commitment or contributed to their 2017 Stewardship Commitment as of June 15, We thank them for their generosity and loving support. We invite you to join with them and support, joyously, the ministries of the Church. You may obtain information and Stewardship Commitment Cards from the Church Office, or you can speak to a Parish Council Member or Fr. Joseph.
