1 TODAY S READINGS First Reading The one who trusts in the Lord is like a tree planted beside the waters (Jeremiah 17:5-8). Psalm Blessed are they who hope in the Lord (Psalm 1). Second Reading Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20). Gospel Blessed are you who are poor, hungry, weeping. Woe to you who are rich, filled, laughing (Luke 6:17, 20-26). ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH Pastor: Rev. Msgr. Dennis R. JOSEPH: Saturdays: 6:00 pm (odd months) Sundays: 8:00 am (even months) Ruma Convent: Sunday at 11am Daily Mass varies at both locations Confessions at St. Joseph: Saturday 5-5:40 pm & Sundays 7:15 7:45 am Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 17, 2019 Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Luke 6:20-21a BLESSED When we think of the word Beatitude we think of today s discourse from Luke s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Matthew (which begins Blessed are the poor in spirit... ). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John s Gospel, Christ proclaims, Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the characteristics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the Blessed, for they are the ones who lived the blessed life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in drawing persons with disabilities into full celebration. Now it is generally accepted that worship places need accommodations such as ramps or elevators, large-print materials for those who are sight-impaired, and perhaps even an assisted hearing system or signing in American Sign Language. American Sign Language is not merely English translated into movement, but a distinct language with its own grammar, syntax (word order), and vocabulary. For this reason, the American Catholic bishops have approved American Sign Language (ASL) as an official language of the liturgy. Celebrating liturgy in our own language (the vernacular) means that liturgy must be accessible to all languages and cultures. The fact that Mass is celebrated this weekend in some places in total silence, but with the full participation of deaf people praising God in the

2 movements of their hands, and sometimes even with a priest who is deaf, is nothing less than the Church being faithful to the image of Jesus, who made the deaf hear and the mute speak. Remember too that deafness is an invisible disability, and that there may well be people in your parish who are quietly yearning for Mass to be signed for them in ASL. Feb. 10, 2019 Envelopes () No Mass Loose Total Weekly goal $ From the Desk of Fr. Dennis This weekend and for the next two weekends will bring us readings we don't often hear, since they often get lost in the shift from Ordinary Time to Lent/Easter and back again. Since Easter is relatively late this year (April 21), we get a few extra weeks of Ordinary Time before Lent begins. Today's readings fit well into the run up to Lent. They present us with decisions about the choices we make in life, which is what Lent does as well. Jeremiah today, offers us a clear choice between trusting in God or trusting in human beings. One way leads to a full life. The question is: will we choose to thrive? Corinthians asks if we ground our hope in the promise of resurrection or only in what this life has to offer. The Gospel brings us Luke's version of the Beatitudes. Rather than eight blessings, he has four blessings and

3 four woes, again highlighting the choices we all have to make. These choices are really about where we place our hope: in the Lord, in the promise of resurrection, and in the coming of the kingdom. Where we place our hope is really a way of saying where our faith is grounded. Remember, don't worry so much, and know that you are loved! Have ablest week! Fr. Dennis Our Deepest Sympathies to the James & Nadeen Reinhold and their family on the recent loss of Nadeen s mother Melba Jean Buehler. Melba Jean passed away February 6, Melba s Mass of ChristianBurial was February 9. Melba Jean was buried at St. Patrick s Cemetery. May Melba Jean enjoy eternal life with the angels and saints. A Great Big Thank You from Carol & Rosie to everyone who helped in anyway with the Parish Breakfast. The turnout was wonderful. We served more than last year. The winner of the 50/50 was Larry Mudd. He quickly phoned his best friend, Larry. "Did you see the paper?" asked Joe. "It says I died!" "Yes, I saw it," replied Larry. ''Where are you calling from?" DID YOU REMEMBER Please contact Deb Ellner at if you or a fellow parishioner are suffering from an injury, illness, or grief and would like a visit. The Prayer chain is in place. If you know of someone who is in need of emergency prayers please call Jeanelle Dinan or the Parents of the First Communion class please note the retreat will be on March 30 th at the Ruma Convent. PARTNERSHIP MASS FOR FEBRUARY IS: St. Patrick: 6pm Saturday St. Joseph: 8am Sunday ON THE LIGHTER SIDE When Joe opened the morning newspaper, he was stunned to see his death notice in the obituary column. If you are looking for a special gift for a loved one the youth is selling candles made from recycled Easter candles. They are $15 and all proceeds go to the NCYC fund. RESPECT LIFE CORNER: Biblical Notion of Justice: Whether in the Old or New Testament, the sense of justice is present. The commands of God and the actions of Jesus work hand in hand to show that caring for the outcast and the poor are key actions to uphold justice for all. John puts it best that the Gospel of Justice is simply to love one another as Christ has loved us! (1 John 23:-24) Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: How does this challenge you? How can you join with others to take concrete stepsbig or small-to help build a society of justice? Visit Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to learn how college students are living out the call. Loving God, Father of all people, help sensitize us to the suffering of others so that we can overcome indifference and build up a civilization of love and justice.

We also attend Luke 18 retreats and mingle with other youth groups to share ideas and stories about our faith. In November of 2019 we will be attending a very large retreat in Indianapolis. The retreat is called The National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC). We, along with 20,000+ other teenagers, will celebrate our faith in God, and be a witness to God s presence in our everyday life and be a witness to other teens about God s love for each of us.
