Matthew 28:19 THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the great treasures of the Eastern tradition is the icon of the Holy Trinity created by the Russian iconographer Andrei Rublev in the 1400s. The Trinity is symbolized by the three travelers to the tent of Abraham and Sarah. They are seated at a table blessing a cup of wine, under the oak of Mamre. If you look closely, you will see a sacrificed calf in the chalice, reminding the viewer of the cross. The table, prepared for eating and tilted toward the viewer, is an invitation to the Eucharist. From left to right, each figure is keyed to a person of the Trinity. Like all icons, this image is theology in art. The persons are equal in proportion and dignity, they all carry staffs to symbolize their power, and are shown with golden wings and halos. Today, the best place to see Rublev s work is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, at the heart of the vast Holy Trinity monastery about an hour from Moscow. After decades of persecution, it is now once again a living monastery, a world heritage site, and the spiritual home of Russian Orthodoxy. A Google visit is highly recommended today!

Dennis We say, "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit," no in the names of the Father, Son, and Spirit. For God, though three persons, is One. This is perhaps the most central mystery of our faith. Today we have the opportunity to reflect on the reality that God, though One, was able to send the Son and the Holy Spirit to us, to save us and to be with us forever. How fortunate we are to be in relationship with God! On this Memorial Day weekend let us not forget the many men and women who gave their lives in the defense of freedom. May we also remember today the men and women of the Armed Forces who are serving our country. May we not take for granted their sacrifices so we can live and worship in freedom and peace.

Sometimes our actions speak for themselves; other times, words are needed. Whatever the situation, Jesus knows how to speak to each person s heart; we simply need to follow where he leads. Learn. Act. Connect. Pray: The first step towards living this life is allowing Jesus to meet and transform us daily. When someone is facing great trials, we need to meet them where they are, walk with them on their journey, intercede for them, and be open to sharing Christ s love however he directs. DIOCESAN HAPPENINGS: CATHOLIC SERVICE AND MINISTRY APPEAL A most heartfelt thanks to all those who have responded with a gift to The 2018 Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal. If you have not already done so, there s still plenty of time. One-time donations or pledges in any amount are needed. Our goal this year is to have 40 families or individuals contributing $9, Please be as generous as you are able. Currently we have collected $8, of our $9, from 28 families. Keep it up folks. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL NEEDS YOUR HELP AGAIN! The Belleville Council Society of St. Vincent de Paul again this year needs donations of bottled water and Gatorade (or similar drinks) to distribute to the poor and homeless during the next few months of hot summer weather. St. Vincent de Paul Requests Personal Care Items The Belleville Council Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) serves many homeless people at its soup kitchen persons each day! In addition to providing a nourishing meal, SVDP provides those in need with personal care items whenever they have them available; small or sample sizes such as those given at motels/hotels are perfect! Items needed include: soap, deodorant, toothpaste/toothbrushes, mouthwash, combs, shampoo, lotions, bandaids, wipes, etc. Should you have any of these types of items available, please consider donating them to St. Vincent de Paul. Items can be dropped off at St. Vincent de Paul Offices #13 Vieux Carre Drive, East St. Louis (Loisel Village area/immediately off Route 157) EVANSVILLE KC Fish Buffet, June 1st, 4:30-8 p.m. Enjoy 4 kinds of fish, chicken strips, 7 sides. MEMORIAL DAY On Monday, May 28 th, Americans will celebrate Memorial Day. If you wish to attend Mass, there will be one Mass here at St. Joseph s at 8am. A second Mass will be celebrated at the Ruma Convent at 11am. The American Legion will begin their Memorial Day Festivities with their Annual Parade at 10am., and conclude with services at our Parish Cemetery. We encourage you to attend Mass and remember our fallen heroes. RENDEZVOUS WEEKEND: Mass will be at 8am at the fort There will NO mass at church. We also need riders and walkers for the parade. TRI-CENTENNIAL PLANS As many of you know our 300 th anniversary is fast approaching. If anyone in the parish is will to help plan or has ideas about how to carry out the celebration please call the rectory. Let your talents be seen. NOMINATIONS On June 10 th we will be asking for nominations for new parish council members. This year there will be two places open on parish council. Paulette R. Deterding and Rachel Steibel whose terms will be coming to an end in July. We wish to thank these ladies for their dedication and service to our parish. If you are interested please stop by the rectory for an application for either the cleaning position or the decorating position or even both. VOLUNTEERS On June 20 th & 23 rd our very own youth group will be scraping, cleaning and painting the iron work on the rectory. If anyone would like to help them with the hard to reach places or equipment please feel free to stop by. PICNIC It s that time again time to plan the picnic. This year we will have a few changes: Picnic grounds will open at 4pm so all stands must be ready by 12:30pm. Dinner will be served from 3-7:30pm Mass will be at 4pm Bingo will be from 5-11pm Please don t wait for someone to call you to work a stand please volunteer. The bingo stand can always use help either shift. There are also other opportunities to help, set up and take down can never have too many able bodied workers. Remember the benefits of helping with the picnic are heavenly.
