July Memory Verse Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name, you are Mine. Isaiah 43:1b NIV Inquires Class If you're considering membership in First Presbyterian Church, or just want to know more about the denomination and/or our church, you're in luck. We will be holding an Inquirers class on Sunday, July 12, following Sunday school. If you are interested in being a part of this class, please contact Pastor Rich or the church office. We look forward to your membership and involvement in our church. ---Paul Podhajsky & Craig Henze, M & I Committee Co-Chairmen Too many students will begin the 2015 school year without even the most basic classroom necessities. Let s help kids in our community go back to school with the tools they need to succeed as we Stuff the Bus! We re inviting you to make a positive impact on a child s life. You can purchase school supplies or make a cash donation for students in need in Marshall County. If you choose to make a financial donation, please make checks payable to the House of Compassion and note on the check for school supplies. All funds will be used to purchase items needed to complete the backpacks. Families must register at the House of Compassion to receive these school supplies. Families qualify by meeting standards based on the current poverty guidelines. We trust you who have been supportive in the past will continue to donate as the needs are great. Last year, we were able to help over 1,000 students through the School Supply Distribution. Stuff the Bus will be headquartered outside the Marshalltown Walmart. The school bus will be staffed with volunteers, and donations will be accepted on the following dates and times: Sat. July 25, 10:00-5:00; Sun. July 26, 12:00-5:00 Sat. Aug. 1, 10:00-5:00 Sun. Aug. 2, 12:00-5:00 Supplies collected at your church must be taken to the bus no later than August 2. Below are the items we need the most. Note: we will need over 4,000 pocket folders. Wide Line Notebook Paper, Colored Pocket Folders, 3 Ring Notebooks Good News from First Presbyterian Church June 30, 2015, page 1

Wide Line Washable Markers, Elementary Scissors, Colored Pencils Erasers (pencil tip & regular), Spiral Notebooks, Black & Blue Erasable Pens All supplies should be new, not used. After Stuff the Bus donations are gathered, all the supplies will be placed into backpacks and distributed to area children whose families have registered at the House of Compassion. The Distribution takes place at St. Paul s Episcopal Church, on Saturday, August 8, 10:00-3:00 and Monday, August 10, 12:00-4:00. If you have questions, please contact Karen Frohwein at HOC ( ). Thanks so much for participating in this project that benefits many children and youth in Marshall County. Communing with God After Apollo 11 landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, pilot Buzz Aldrin requested via radio that people pause to give thanks for the achievement in their own way. When his broadcast ended, Aldrin read a verse from the Gospel of John and took communion, which his church had sent to space with him. It was interesting for me to think: the very first liquid ever poured on the moon, and the very first food eaten there, were the communion elements, the astronaut said. At the time, I could think of no better way to acknowledge the enormity of the Apollo 11 experience than by giving thanks to God. Berry Picking Picnic There will be a Berry Picking Picnic open to all on Saturday, July 18. Meet at the church at 9:00 a.m. We will car-pool unless there are enough to take the church bus to Nevada to the Berry Patch. Blueberries, currants, gooseberries and raspberries will be in season. Blueberries are easy for anyone to pick. You can even sit in your lawn chair and fill a bucket! We will eat lunch at Hickory Park in Ames following the picking. All are encouraged to attend for fun and fellowship. Jam making will be the following day, July 19, during Sunday school. Awesome Presbys Awesome Presbys helped with VBS in a big way. They were tribe assistants, games helpers, and one of them also ran the soundboard. Thank you for serving your church family, APs! The Gathering Place will be open for all youth who have completed 4th grade through High School from 1:00 3:00 on Monday, July 20, and August 3. On July 21, the group will travel to Ledges State Park near Boone for some hiking, swimming, and a picnic. We will leave from the church at 9:00 a.m. and return by 3:00 p.m. Please bring your appropriate swimwear, towel, hiking shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and sack lunch. Creek shoes are also a good idea. On August 11, Awesome Presbys will have their long-awaited trip to play laser tag and bowling at Perfect Games in Ames. More details in the next newsletter. Vacation Bible School News Thank you, Lord, for all the wonderful talents, faith, and servants hearts you have blessed this church with. Thank you for the hard work and dedication of so many from planning, publicity, preparing wood kits and rocks, bringing baskets and costumes out of storage, buying groceries and cleaning vegetables, cooking, and Good News from First Presbyterian Church, June 30, 2015, page 2

washing pots and pans, learning lines, decorating the church, registering participants and creating tribes, wrangling kids, teaching lessons, running the soundboard, making copies and labels and knowing where to find help, leading worship, wrangling kids, making sample snacks, holding babies, filling water balloons, wrangling kids, bringing in livestock, telling the story, building relationships with kids, sharing the good news, having fun with kids, playing organ, leading adult activities, wrangling kids, shooting video, engaging with kids, washing costumes, wrangling kids, and so much more. Thank you also for each of the children who joined us this week, and the friends that they brought. We are so blessed to have them and know that they have taken June s memory verse ( For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7) to heart in sharing their faith with the Nazareth characters. Thank you for the parents and grandparents who brought their kids, came for dinner and who came to our closing celebration. And I also thank you for the great people I get to work with and that you have chosen to do great things through us all this week. Please continue to bless our efforts that VBS isn t an ending point, but rather a start-- a start for these precious children and a start for our church- Your church. Amen. ---Michelle Wilkinson, CE Coordinator made Himself known to His human flock during the fourth week of June. Here are a few of the things people mentioned. Can you tell which are from the children? You might be surprised! If you d like to see more, the pasture will be hanging in the Lower Lounge this summer. Feel free to add your God Sightings! God Sightings: Trees, flowers, people holding the door, standing up for a friend, praying, people, Bible, the church, shark, I visited shut-ins, VBS volunteers, beautiful sunsets, garden produce from a tiny seed! VBS lettuce seeds have sprouted, family & sunshine, God & Jesus = love, went to the pool, Mary s house, family shows love, good behavior, owl, mom visiting VBS, met a lively sheep, Eunice believes! Helping a neighbor, my father s good health, Henry was baptized last week, Drew s team won the championship, kind ladies helping with VBS, saw some birds, big flowers, brave brother, my aunt, butterflies, went to the movies, ice cream, went to bed on time, got a hug from friend, mom taught me how to tie my shoes, and a friend recovering from a stroke. The VBS mission offering raised $ This will be used to start a library in Rosedale, West Virginia. We noticed there was no library in the community, and when we asked the missionary about it, she said the county librarian had been in two weeks earlier. They are planning a little free sort of library for the front stoop of the community center. Our timing and theirs is in sync, so it must be God s timing! Once again, the children recorded their God Sightings at VBS, this time on sheep in a special pasture. We also asked the adults to write down a God Sighting during the church service while the children sang two VBS songs. The result is lush pasture of wooly sheep fully of the Lord s blessings. This blessing flock represents the many ways God has Sunday school Activities The children raised $ through their mission bucket offering throughout the school year. This was enough for gas for one van to drive to Gassaway, West Virginia, and back home! Great job, kids! Thank you to our Children s Church helper in June: Yasuyo Smith; Good News from First Presbyterian Church, June 30, 2015, page 3

and the Sunday school helpers for June: Carter & Francis Strand, Wynona Anderson, Karin Podhajsky, Cathy Pearson, Addie Wilkinson, Nancy VanWyk and Barb Hawkins. Church Women United will not meet in July & August. Summer Camp Attention First Presbyterian children and youth: The camp has added an extra session for kids who have completed 3rd and 4th grades. They can now attend FAST camp, July 5 8. This is a good camp for kids who may not feel ready for a full week of camp or who are too busy to fit a whole week into their schedule. For more details, follow the CAMP link on the church s website Camperships are still available, so see Michelle if you would like more information. Variously known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4 th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18 th century and the American Revolution ( ). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4, has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. John Adams believed that July 2, was the correct date on which to celebrate the birth of American independence, and would reportedly turn down invitations to appear at July 4, events in protest. Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. James Monroe died on July 4, 1831, thus becoming the third President in a row who died on the holiday. Good News from First Presbyterian Church, June 30, 2015, page 4 PWC News Elizabeth Circle will not meet during the months of July and August. Sarah Circle will not meet during the months of July and August. PWC will not meet during the months of July and August. PWC-CT will not meet in July. The next meeting will be August 25. Financial Report for May MAY 2015 Actual Total Receipts $34, Budget 40, Total Expenses $29, Budget 32, Year to Date: Total Receipts $155, Budget 179, Difference (23,611.00) Total Expenses ($168,415.00) Budget (182,634.00) Difference 14, A God-created Super Star God made... the greater light to rule the day... (Genesis 1:16, NRSV). The first biblical description of Creation reveals that God made the sun a truly amazing body of light. At the sun s center (where the temperature reaches 15 million degrees!), every second, 600 million tons of hydrogen fuse into 596 million tons of helium. The 4 million missing tons become sunshine, making life on earth possible. The sun s magnetic field (which reverses direction every 11 years) and the resulting sunspots and solar flares impact the earth in ways most of us rarely think about. Writes Dennis Overbye in the New York Times: In all of recorded history, as far as

scientists have been able to tell, the sun s output has varied by only a tenth of a percent. If the sun were more volatile, like many stars, earth would either burn up or freeze at regular intervals. As you spend time outside this summer, give thanks for this bright marvel that God designed. ---our faithful workers at the House of Compassion during the month of June: Dean & Mary Baker, David Egli, Shirley Egli, Joe Holubar, Ed Jackson, Estelle Perkins, Michelle Wilkinson and kids, Carolyn Wilkinson, and Dave & Don Wilson. The Emergency Food Box is currently in need of the following food items: cereal, pork and beans, corn, green beans, peas, canned fruit, canned tomatoes, and spaghetti. (Please check the expiration dates to make sure the food items are not outdated.) Thank you for your past contributions. In the first quarter of 2015, the Emergency Food Box served 787 families with a total of 2,850 people. EFB is run by an all-volunteer staff, and all food items are donated or purchased from the money contributed. We could not provide food to so many people without your help! Food items or monetary (check/cash) donations may be brought to the EFB (109 S. 3rd St.) any weekday afternoon, 1:30-4:30. Please make checks payable to: Emergency Food Box. Our mailing address is: EFB, P.O. Box 391, Marshalltown, IA Donated funds are used to buy food items from the Food Bank of Iowa and locally. To First Presbyterian Church Members I'd like to thank Kari and Gracia Hancock for delivering a beautiful bouquet of flowers after church Sunday, June 7. Dick and I are still enjoying them. I also appreciated Pastor Rich's visit last week. I always enjoy our conversations and appreciate him bringing me Communion. Thanks so much. ---Carol Ploeger Dear First Presbyterian Church, Thank you for your generous donation from the Missions Committee. This donation helped me stay in Chicago for the summer working with Campus Crusades. We have been going out around the University of Chicago talking to random people about the Gospel. Using my sense of humor has helped me interact with others. It has been slightly challenging, but I am getting more comfortable talking to strangers about Christ. Thanks again! ---David Butler What an amazing week of Vacation Bible School! You should be proud of the work you have done to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the young people of this community! Including our middle school and high school helpers we had 95 young people, preschool through high school, involved. This was a whole church effort! It took all of us working together to accomplish this great week. A big thank you goes out to Michelle Wilkinson, our Christian Education Coordinator and the Christian Education Committee who organized, recruited & trained volunteers, and generally made sure everything was covered. Thank you to Jon for playing a lead role in our Celebration time at the beginning and end of every night. Thank you to all the volunteers who taught, played roles in the skits, and guided our children through the various activities. Thank you to the Flap Jack guys who built bird house kits, basketball game kits and boat kits for the children to construct and paint. What a great activity and a true blessing to have you work with these young souls. Thank you to all who supplied needed items (sheep on the pole) for the week s activities. Also, a big thank you to Lavonne Watkins and the entire kitchen crew who helped prepare, serve and clean up the meals for each evening and to all who supplied desserts. I was thanked by many mothers who appreciated not having to cook this week while trying to get the family to VBS. Overall, we had 112 people involved in putting on this program. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples. That is exactly what this church is doing! One of the teachers, after hearing how many young people participated this year, said, Next year we break a hundred. The ministry is growing! We need your continued help to make this happen. Please prayerfully consider how you can help our church reach more youth in our Good News from First Presbyterian Church, June 30, 2015, page 5

community. We have a great need for more volunteers to help with set up and decorating, leading and teaching the children, cooking and serving the meals, and publicity and follow up. The cost of curriculum, supplies and food continues to rise, so your increased giving to the mission of this church is a great help to reaching these young people. Together we can continue to grow this and our other programs that are reaching our community for Jesus Christ. Thank You All! Pastor Rich B.asic I.nstructions B.efore L.eaving E.arth It's vacation season in the Midwest and many of us will soon be boarding airplanes. How often have you and fellow passengers heard the emergency instructions by the cabin attendants just prior to takeoff? How much attention do any of us pay to the instructions? Blah, blah, blah. When my daughter, Cassandra, was just a few months old, our family flew to Hawaii. On final approach to Honolulu, the pilot came over the intercom to tell us that there was another plane parked across our runway and we would have to take evasive action. Even though we were on final approach, we had to turn around, go back out to sea and try again. Just as a precaution, the pilot had the attendants recite the emergency instructions again. This time, even the most seasoned flyers paid close attention. We felt our stomachs churn as the pilot banked HARD to avoid the airspace above the airport. Looking out the window we were certain the wing's tip might touch the waves of the Pacific. We had good reason to listen now. These words were important in our lives right here, right now. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus preaches what could be the shortest sermon in history. He goes to the synagogue in Nazareth where he had been brought up, he is given the Scroll of Isaiah by synagogue officer, and he reads from Isaiah 61. "The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring the Good News to the poor. He has sent me to announce release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind; to set at liberty those who have been oppressed; and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." And Jesus sat down and said: "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing". It's the equivalent of dropping the microphone and walking off stage. As frequent flyers in church, we hear 'The Good News' so often, sometimes it becomes blah, blah, blah while we're trying to sneak a few more minutes on our smart phone before the flight attendant tells us to put it away. But this Good News is not just good, it's essential! We realize its importance whenever a situation threatens our comfort or mortality - but the Word of God is to be heeded every time it is spoken, preached, or read. Enjoy the blessing that is the Holy Scripture whenever you get a chance to hear or read it. And give the flight attendant your attention whenever you fly - these instructions are for your sake, not hers. Blessings, Pastor Ian McMullen JUNE SESSION ACTIONS The Stated Session meeting of First Presbyterian Church, Marshalltown, met at 7:03 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2015, in the Lower Lounge. Moderator Rev. Dr. Richard A. King opened the meeting and Brenda Severson presented the devotions and opening prayer. Motion prevailed to approve the minutes of the May 19, 2015 Stated Meeting as printed. Henry Owen Johnson will be baptized Sunday, June 21. Financials - Matt Broshar presented the Financial and Investments reports. May giving was the second highest giving month for many years. Giving is ahead of where we were last year at this time. There is a positive cash flow. Utility costs continue to drop. Spending is under budget. Money continues to come in for the Building Fund, along with a few memorials. Missions/Evangelism - Doug Boyd reported noting that the committee determined what would be paid to local Benevolence Agencies. They will also be supporting David Butler's ministry in Chicago. The committee contacted attorney, Darrel Meyer to study the contract for applying for a $40,000 Mission gift from the Byron Lesch Memorial Mission Fund. One and one-half per cent of the fund interest can Good News from First Presbyterian Church, June 30, 2015, page 6

be used for mission giving and the remainder of any interest in the fund would be returned to the fund. A new corporation would have five directors that would be accountable to the Session of First Presbyterian Church. As a recommendation from the Missions Committee, motion prevailed to have Session authorize the Mission and Evangelism Committee to establish a corporation and name directors from the body of the church for the purpose of proceeding with application for a gift from the Byron Lesch Memorial Mission Fund. If the application is successful, this money is to be invested using proceeds partially for growth of the fund and partially for mission contributions, all in accordance with the stipulations of the Bryon Lesch Memorial Mission Fund. Before finalizing this process, the Mission & Evangelism Committee is to make every effort to contact churches already enrolled to learn of any concerns or comments. The five directors include Mike Hancock, Dick McBride, Jim Perkins, Steve Strand and Bruce Wirin. Finance & Stewardship Larry Schrum reported that Rich Mohon of Independent Insurance of Marshalltown was authorized to bring quotes for the church insurance policy with them. Larry will check with the group plan through the Presbyterian Church to compare prices. W & M - Brenda Severson reported noting the congregation has been blessed with wonderful music provided from the talents of people within the congregation. Rich's sermons through August will be "Walking in the Spirit." Some of the youth are helping usher the fourth Sunday of each month. Communion 156 on May 3, and 142 on June 7. Home Communion was taken to Jean Brennecke, Betty Emmons, Bette Etter, Jean Evans, Doris Flanagan, Mavis Gray, LaVone Lee, Lavine Meyer, Rose Muschick, Connie Montover, 12 Embers residents and 18 residents at Glenwood Place. Christian Education Karin Podhajsky presented a printed report noting that VBS will be June 21-25, in the evening. Only two scholarship applications have been turned in for summer camp, but more kids may be going to camp. The Gathering was discussed. Volunteers have signed up to help with summer Sunday school. Children's Church won't be held during July and August. The Gathering Place will be open 4-5 times during the summer for the middle and High School kids to hang-out. Ten youth and six adults went on the mission trip. Jon is working to start some small groups on Wednesday evenings for young adults. A & P Committee - Roger Anders reported he made an announcement in church regarding the financial situation of the church. He asked for committees and staff to give a weekly up-date during church of the programs they are doing to keep the congregation informed as to how their money is being spent. M & I Committee A printed report was presented. They are still working on the pictorial directory. Inquirers classes will be held June 21, and July 12. The I-Cubs game is scheduled for June 28. Jon Rottink is working on a Young Family Event to be held at his place July 4. Plans are being made for the Church Camping trip to Saylorville the weekend of August 8. Discussion was held on the Annual Indoor Picnic. Paul is working to have a whiffle ball game and hot dog roast at the Iowa Veterans Home July 12 or 19. Property - Kurt Lynch reported that Area Sanitation will provide three smaller garbage cans for $65 as they don't have the larger receptacles. The first can would be $25 and each additional can would be $20. A recycling bin can be included for an additional $7 per month. Kurt will call to switch the church garbage service company. Other Business Rich requested the need for people to help cook for VBS and clean up. The meeting was closed with group prayer. Good News from First Presbyterian Church, June 30, 2015, page 7
