April Memory Verse He isn t here; He has risen, just as He said. Matthew 28:6 Inquirer s New Members Class An Inquirer s Class (New Members) will be held Sunday, April 10, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. in the church Fellowship Hall for those interested in learning more about the Presbyterian Church, or for anyone wishing to become members. Prospective members will meet with Session on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. to be accepted into membership, and will be introduced to the congregation at a later date. The purpose of the class is to provide you with information about what our church believes and how it operates. In addition, we want you to get to know some of the leaders of our church, and together, we hope to investigate ways we can better serve God and each other. South Sudan Water Project The second phase of the South Sudan water project is in full motion! The shipping container of drill rigs and well equipment that left Marshalltown in late December arrived in Mombasa, Kenya on February 26. It is now in transit overland to Juba, South Sudan. From there it will be shipped by boat down the Nile and Zaref rivers. It is a difficult and hazardous journey. We ask for your prayers that the equipment arrives safely in Old Fankok later this month. We are excited to share pictures of the container's arrival in Mombasa. James Ruach, on the right, is our boots on the ground and is traveling with the equipment on the final leg of the journey to Old Fankok. Also pictured are two of the drill team leaders, Stephen Ayul and Augastus Njue. We will keep you advised of progress as it happens. Thank you for your continued support of this critically important clean water project! ---WellSpring Missions Join us Sunday, April 17, at 6:00 p.m. the April Hymn Sing. Mike Gerbo will lead the music with Marsha Bristley playing the piano and Marla Grossman playing the organ. The quartet One-Part Harmony will be the featured music for the evening. Refreshments will follow the program. Good News from First Presbyterian Church March 31, 2016, page 1

2 Attention 2016 High School & College Graduates Just a reminder! First Presbyterian Church would like to celebrate our graduate's achievements during the worship service Sunday, May 15. If there is a graduate in your family (high school or higher education), please phone the church at or fill out the information below and bring it along with a billfold sized picture to the church office by Sunday, May 1. Include the name of the student on the back of the photo so it may be returned to you. If you have any questions, please contact Jon Rottink at jrottink@hotmail.com or at Name: School: Certificate/Degree (post high school): Fools for Christ April Fools Day isn t a religious holiday, though it may date to Pope Gregory XIII and his new calendar. In 1582, he shifted New Year s Day from April to January, and people who didn t believe the change were called April fools. April Fools Day may also be connected to the lightheartedness that comes with warmer weather, as well as to medieval Christian festivals that involved pranks, disguises and a temporarily inverted social order. Yet, in Scripture, such reversal characterizes the kingdom of God. In 1 Corinthians 1:18-25, St. Paul writes that the gospel seems foolish to people who don t know Christ, that God uses the foolishness of our proclamation to offer salvation to all and that God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom. Jesus foolishly inverted the social order, saying the last will be first and the first, last. So if on April 1, and every day we live as fools for Christ, we re precisely what He calls us to be! Awesome Presbys Church Women United will meet Friday, April 1, for a forum meeting at 9:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church. The program will feature Kathy Larson of the Marshalltown Garden Club. 3 Sunday school Sunday school focused on Easter in March. They learned about Palm Sunday and how Jesus washed His disciples feet. On Easter Sunday, they met in a mixed age group and had a special Easter lesson. In April, they will resume learning about Jesus calling His disciples and what it means to be a disciple. The preschool class is continuing to learn about God s creation. God Sightings Summer 2015 During VBS and throughout the summer we asked the children and adults to share their God sightings. They were written on special sheep and put to graze in the God Sightings Pasture, first in the Narthex and later in the Lower Lounge. There were five pages of blessings shared! Here are a few of them to brighten your days: Read farther than a fourth grader in one minute, creek, Tacos yummy, my siblings, my aunt, raspberries, crafts, we are safe, I love Jesus, my cousin, food, let mom sleep because of headache, toad, cows and calves, trying to read the Bible every day and saw a bobcat. Wednesday Club Wednesday Club has continued learning about the armor of God and how we can use it to "Win Against Sin." The kids have made armor for themselves during craft time, and they are excited to wear the whole armor for their parent program on April 20. Pastor Dave Beckmann and Youme, his dummy, shared the Easter story with the kids. Everyone wanted to know how Youme could talk and sing, and they enjoyed listening to him. A few of the youngest ones weren t too sure whether Jesus was a better gift than a chocolate bunny, but most didn t hesitate to choose Jesus. We were also blessed to have Addie and Bryce stop by and help when they were home from college for spring break. The kids from last year enjoyed seeing them again. There are only a few Wednesdays left, so sign up to help soon so you don t miss out on the fun! Thank you to our March helpers: Bus drivers Orlyn Langenbau and Jon Rottink, bus rider Fran Smith, snacks Cindy Butler, Mary Hemming, Irene Hopp, Susan Lawyer, and Barb McBride. Helpers Wynona Anderson, Marylou Beckmann, Bryce King, Adam Podhajsky, Fran Smith, Nancy VanWyck, Addie Wilkinson, and Cindy Wise, and youth helpers Makenna Ainsworth, CayDen Bartlett, Nolan Bartlett, Caroline Kauffman, Drew King, Koffi Tengue, and Andrea Torres. Summer Camp Camp registration is underway! We would love to help you go to church camp this summer, and we have funds available. Campership forms are available through the camp link on the church website ( and in the church office. They need to be completed and returned by Sunday, May 1. We will try to arrange a carpool for children going to camp. The most likely weeks for this would be June 19, and July 17. If you have questions please see Michelle Wilkinson. Information on 2016 camp offerings for children and families (including grandparents) is available on the Lakeshore Center at Okoboji website: mps/overview.aspx. Check the Summer Camp tab at the top. There is also a calendar showing the weeks when different ages can attend camp on the church website and on Michelle s door. Vacation Bible School News This summer, VBS will be June We will be transforming the church in order to experience Egypt: Joseph s Journey from Prison to Palace. Adult learning opportunities will include a Sunday evening presentation on Egypt by Tom Bower. Jean Bower will do a special program for Good News from First Presbyterian Church, March 31, 2016, page 3

4 the children as well. Once again, many volunteers will be needed, so please consider how you can contribute to our exciting VBS. In April, look for our brick pillar in the Narthex. Check out the bricks to see what items you can lend or donate to this year s VBS. PWC News Elizabeth Circle will meet Thursday, April 14, at 1:30 p.m. in the Lower Lounge. The program will be on "forgiveness." Sarah Circle will meet Tuesday, April 19, at 9:15 a.m. in the Lower Lounge. PWC will go to Ackley for their spring gathering meeting at 8: 30 a.m. on Saturday, April 9. The group will car-pool from the church. A free luncheon will follow. Please sign up on the poster in the Narthex so we will know how many reservations to make for the luncheon. This is open to all women of the church so, plan to attend. PWC-CT will meet Tuesday, April 26, at 1:00 p.m. in the Lower Lounge. Elizabeth Circle Elizabeth Circle meets at 1:30 p.m. in the Lower Lounge on the second Thursday of each month. We are different from Sarah Circle in a number of ways. Our main emphasis is Bible Study. Lola Rinnan is our current moderator. Right now, we are studying "Forgiveness." We use study guides and take turns giving the lesson. We do collect the "Least Coin" devotion pennies, but we do not have any other offerings or fundraising except for the 25 we put in each week to cover the cost of sending Get Well, Thinking of You or Sympathy cards. At the conclusion of our meetings, we have a dessert and coffee together. We love and care about each other, and we invite any other women in the church to join us. ---Marylou Beckmann Sarah Circle Sarah Circle is one of two Presbyterian women s circles that make up the majority of membership and support for the encompassing Presbyterian Women of the Church (PWC). All women of the church are automatically a part of PWC and do not have to belong to a circle. But belonging to a circle is a good way to form friendships on a spiritual level as well as a social and service level. While Elizabeth Circle is strictly a Bible study, Sarah Circle is more along the line of a smaller PW. We have breakfast together at 9:15am on the third Thursday of each month in the Lower Lounge, except for the summer months. We have devotions, a short meeting and usually, a speaker in regards to missions. We may have a Bible study or a program by a member along the line of religious topics. We take up a free well offering, and with that money we have been able to do the following: support overseas missions, help local families in and outside of our church family, give encouragement for David Githi, send care packages for our first year college students and give Christmas support for a local family, etc. During the Christmas season, we organize the Alternative Gift Fair which, due to the generosity of our church family, raised over $4,000 for Carter Strand s orphanage in the Central Africa Republic and almost $2,000 for Church World Services in We also support the work of our local PWC. We are a small group of about 13 women. There is no membership fee, no requirements except to take a turn hosting. We are very casual and we LOVE welcoming women to our gathering whenever any of you can join us. ---Jinita Boyd ( ), President A Shepherd s Role While traveling in Iran, writer Eric Bishop asked a villager about an earthen enclosure topped with dry thorns. The man said sheep stayed in the round space at night for safety. What are the thorns for? Bishop asked. If a wolf tries to break in and attack the sheep, the man replied, he ll knock against the thorns, and they ll make a noise, and the shepherd will wake up and drive off the wolf. Pointing out the enclosure s doorless entrance, Bishop asked why a wolf wouldn t just enter there. Because, replied the villager, that s where the shepherd sleeps; the shepherd is the door. Suddenly Bishop understood why in John 10 Jesus calls Himself first the door, or gate, for the sheep and then the Good Shepherd. Because Jesus is the shepherd, He s also the door that keeps us, His sheep, safe within His care. Good News from First Presbyterian Church, March 31, 2016, page 4

For others, it starts in puberty. Still others start out with the problems occurring as they age or from accidents or war injuries causing blindness. This disorder is a neurological sleep disorder in which a person's sleep/wake cycle is longer than 24 hours. The person is unable to adjust his sleepwake cycle to the length of the day, and his sleep cycle progresses around the clock. For example, if he goes to sleep at midnight and sleeps until 8 a.m. one day, he may not be able to fall asleep until 1 or 2 a.m. the next night and will need to sleep correspondingly later for the following morning. The delay does not stop at 1 or 2 a.m., but continues to get worse every day until he is going to sleep at 4 a.m. - 6 a.m. - 8 a.m a.m. - noon. Eventually, he comes around the clock again to his starting point and the process continues on. For some people, the cycle varies from day to day, and they cannot predict their sleep/wake schedule in advance. Non-24 is a neurological disorder, but it can cause psychological problems in that it is extremely difficult to cope with the symptoms, and there is often a lack of understanding from family, friends, employers and even doctors. The resultant lack of acceptance may seriously undermine employment, relationships and self-esteem of a person with Non-24. Non-24 is believed to affect over half of all totally blind individuals; it does affect some sighted people as well. However, the underlying causes are different and these should be seen as two distinct disorders: Blind Non-24 and Sighted Non- 24. Non-24 is often misdiagnosed. Many people try to cope with Non-24 by forcing themselves to keep a normal schedule, and this results in chronic sleep deficit with symptoms that can mimic depression, insomnia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, or just plain fatigue. How can a doctor diagnose Non-24: a. Getting a log of sleep activity from the person. b. Doing a sleep study - this study should be done when the person can sleep normally. c. Conduct a multiple sleep latency test to be conducted during the person's day, to evaluate the possibility of narcolepsy, and in some people, multiple disorders may be present to rule out other problems causing the problem. Treatment for Non-24 After all tests are completed and the sleep hours have cycled to the right time, then the doctor may order: a. A bright light in the morning, restricted light in the evening and/or take the hormone melatonin in the evening in an attempt to stabilize the body's circadren rhythm at the right time. For many Non-24 people, sleeping on a normal schedule may be difficult or impossible, and trying to do so results in sleep deprivation and stress. With all the harmful effects this can cause, some people find they can be much more productive and happier living on the rotating schedule which their body naturally reverts to. For severe cases, this may be the only realistic option. Good News from First Presbyterian Church, March 31, 2016, page 5

6 Much research is being done to understand the circadren rhythm and sleep. Early diagnosis is helpful to assist the person in finding accommodations for school through work opportunities. Congratulations to Jon & Heather Rottink on the birth of their son, Isaiah Jon, on Thursday, March 17, Isaiah was born at 9:13 p.m. and weighed 9 lbs. and was 21.5" long. Isaiah was welcomed home by big sisters Elliana and Naysa. Here's an update concerning my grandson, Jonathan, who sustained severe injuries in an auto accident in October, He is now able to move his left leg himself, and is now walking with a crutch, which the doctors predicted would not happen for at least 1½ years. It has been because of prayers that he is at this point of recovery. I wish to thank my church family for your concern and prayers for Jonathan's recovery. ---Jan Faber Dear First Presbyterian Church Thank you very much for your generous donation towards Luba Maternity Center. I greatly appreciate your support, generosity and encouragement. Thank you for making ministry in Sierra Leone possible. I'm excited to get the clinic open and start seeing a difference in healthcare for moms and babies. Sincerely. ---Kayla Hatch In moments of sorrow, it's family and friends who bring love and peace. Thank you sincerely. Thank you to everyone for all your prayers and visits during Marilyn's illness. God's blessings on all of you. ---Bill Hatcher, Becky, Bev and Tracy ---our faithful workers at the House of Compassion during the month of March: the Awesome Presbys, Marylou Beckmann, Carolyn Bell, Shirley Egli, Mike Gerbo, Ed Jackson, Ed & Natalia Peng, Estelle Perkins, Carole Permar, Fran & Ken Smith, Carolyn Wilkinson and Barb Wollam. Remedy for Easter Hangover John 20:19-22 What a great Easter we ve just had! The music! The lilies! The darling little ones in their bonnets and new shoes! The candy! The Easter dinner I m STILL full! Oh yes, and Jesus! We can t say enough about that guy. What a great message of resurrection and hope and the ol empty-tomb gag that was great. After all that excitement I m ready for a nap! When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Thanks, Jesus, peace be with you too. Like I was saying, now we dust off our hands, if there s any Easter candy left we put it in the fridge, poke our head out the door to sniff the springtime air, and look toward the next big thing. What s next? April s pretty quiet as far as holidays. We start off with April Fool s Day and Tax Day (coincidence? I think not). Earth Day and Arbor Day are craftily positioned at the beginning of spring. Confirmation Sunday on the 24 th will be wonderful. Other than that, we re just waiting around for May to get here with Pentecost, graduations, and warmer weather. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. Again, Jesus, peace be with you too. Sheesh The Sunday after Easter is often the lowest attended service of the year by pastors too! Many church workers take a break after the busyness and stress of Holy Week. Because if anybody needs a break it s us Christians! As the Father has sent Me, so I send you." Good News from First Presbyterian Church, March 31, 2016, page 6

7 You re kidding right? We ve just endured a whole Holy Week of activities. Well, OK Jesus, You endured Holy Week - my bad. When I said endured I meant it in the best possible Hosanna-y way. But seriously Jesus, I m ready to relax and sleep like Rumpelstiltskin. How on earth do you expect me to muster any energy and enthusiasm? When He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. Oh... right. I m making it all about me aren t I? Folks, we party hard during Holy Week because the message of Christ s death and resurrection is certainly something to celebrate. But afterwards, we tend to put it away with the plastic eggs until next year. Easter doesn t end Jesus ministry, it builds momentum for ours. The next big thing on our calendar should be to appear to others with the Good News of the risen Christ - just like Jesus did. And as for your Easter hangover, seek the Holy Spirit and start like Jesus did, Peace be with you. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again! Pastor Ian The Presbytery of North Central Iowa is taking seriously the decline of mainline Christianity and is trying to encourage growth and evangelism in our churches. With that in mind, the Presbytery has formed two pastor support groups (cohorts) to encourage and train pastors to lead in this religiously changing culture that we exist in. These cohorts are enrolled in a program of learning and support developed and run by Macedonian Ministry out of Atlanta, Georgia. The founder of this ministry is Rev. Dr. Tom Towel who preached at Marshalltown a couple of years ago when he was in the Presbytery leading a workshop. The mission of Macedonian Ministry is to serve the church of Jesus Christ by renewing pastors, transforming congregations, and impacting communities with the gospel. The Macedonia Ministry website describes their ministry with pastors this way: Macedonian Ministry groups are designed to embody the most fruitful insights and practices of the Christian tradition while drawing strength from contemporary discussions about creative and effective leadership in many spheres of life (e.g., business, government, and non-profits). We intend our Macedonian Ministry groups to be a place where pastors not only feel valued and supported in their ministry but also equipped for more dynamic ministry. Pastors in these groups will feel both the warmth of Christian fellowship and the thrill of iron sharpening iron. " Macedonian Ministry has partnered with the Cousin Family Foundation to provide a pilgrimage experience to Israel for each pastor involved in the cohorts. Tom Cousins is a Presbyterian Elder who believes in investing in pastors in order to see the church of Jesus Christ grow. The Cousins Family Foundation is paying all the expenses for the two cohorts from North central Iowa Presbytery to go to Israel this June. We will leave on May 30, and return on June 12. It is a great privilege to get to return to Israel and walk where Jesus walked. It is my hope that you can participate with me in this pilgrimage through a daily prayer guide and devotional that will focus on the sites we will be visiting while on the trip. And through the photography and stories that I will be able to share in the Synoptic Gospels Sunday school class which will start in July. Since Pastor Dave will be retired, both Ian and I will be gone to Israel at the same time and Jon will be leading the Youth on their mission trip during this time, the church has arranged for Jean Bower to preach and cover pastoral care.
