2 Quilts for Missions Presbyterian Women plan to make mission quilts. We invite anyone interested to come and help with this project. Our plan is to meet for six Wednesdays in the Lower Lounge to work on the quilts. The dates are January 22 & 29, and February 5, 12, 19 & 26. Plan to help any time between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please bring a can of soup each Wednesday you work on the quilts that will be shared for lunch. Donations of cotton fabric are appreciated. The quilts are constructed from donated fabrics. Questions may be directed to Linda Moore at or Shala Ludley at LaVine Meyer enjoying the carolers. Soup & Sing caroling has been going on between years at First Presbyterian Church. Despite the cold, Bill was truly impressed with the turn out from the adults, teens, and children as about 72 people attended. Successful Soup & Sing Jean Evans enjoying the carolers. Hats off to the volunteer cooks in making the soups, vegetables, etc., all to get motivated to sing. Bill Eilers asked some church members what they get out of caroling. Some answers were to bring joy to other people and to show that we care. Its' a chance to sing Christmas songs. This is a chance to see, visit and sing for the shut-in's here in town. Ada Spencer expressed what a blessing it was to have the little children surround her as we sang Christmas carols to her, O, the children! What a blessing. O, What a blessing. Jean Brennecke commented, What a joy it was to see the children and to have you all come. Thank you. The people at the Embers said the only thing wrong with it is that it ended too soon. It was a great night to bless those who cannot come to church as often as they would like. And in turn all those that participated were blessed to see the joy on the faces of those we caroled to. 3 Wednesday Club Happenings We have been busy at Wednesday Club in December. The kids learned about the peace that comes from knowing God will take their worries. We wrote or drew our worries on a piece of paper, made it into a paper airplane, prayed for God to take care of our worries, and threw them as far away as possible. It was great fun, but one little girl lost her airplane by throwing it too soon. She was so worried about the airplane that she couldn t hear the lesson. That was a perfect example for all of us on how our worries crowd out the joy in our lives and cause us to miss what s really important. She got her airplane back and then she understood! We had a birthday party for Jesus which included lots of songs, games, and craft time. The highlight, of course, was the birthday cake and prize drawing! Merry Christmas! Thank you for all of your prayers for Wednesday Club and for the beautiful children who attend. They work! Please prayerfully consider how you can support this ministry. If you are unable to volunteer your time, perhaps you could help us with some supplies or restock our beverages. When you see our faithful volunteers, please thank and encourage them. Our volunteers for December were: Bus drivers, Orlyn Langenbau and Jon Rottink. Bus rider: Fran Smith. Snack providers: Mary Hemming, Barb McBride, and Carole Permar. Helpers: Doug Bacon, Marylou Beckmann, Matt Broshar, Mary Hemming, Tedra Henze, Darrell Meyer, Fran Smith, and Cindy Wise. Youth Helpers: Marcus Henze, Caroline Kauffman, Ellen Podhajsky, Jill Podhajsky, and Sam Wilkinson. And a special thank you to Karin Podhajsky for making a pin baby Jesus to the manger game for our party. PWC News Elizabeth Circle will not meet in January. Sarah Circle will meet Tuesday, January 21, at 9:15 a.m. in the Lower Lounge. PWC will not meet in January. Church Women United will not meet in January or February. Operation Christmas Child Our Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes have been sent to India this year. The world s largest democracy has a population of 1.2 billion people, 29% of them under 15. This season, 417,312 shoeboxes were sent to India s children. First Presbyterian Church donated 48 of those boxes. Eighty percent of India s population is Hindu, and Muslims make up another 13%. Though only 2.3% of the population is Christian, they still number over 27 million people. India has 16 official languages with English being the most important for national, commercial and political communication. India has the world s fourth largest economy yet only has a per capita GDP of $3, th in the world. Over half of the workforce is employed in agriculture and a third of the people live in poverty. Twelve percent of children are in the labor force and over 43% of children under the age of 5 are underweight. Male literacy is about 75%; for females it is 50%. Life expectancy is 67 years. In this environment, your shoebox gift can really make a difference! Good News from First Presbyterian Church, December 31, 2013, page 3

4 Mission in Honduras Nancy (Faber) Paul, who grew up in our church, her husband, Shawn, and daughter, Alexis are currently missionaries to Honduras for three years. They plan to spread the Word about Jesus and to help people and ministers in rural mountain areas to learn more. They have found that things they need every day are more expensive than they thought they would be. They have used up their support money for the next month. The Paul s are very enthusiastic about helping the people in Honduras in many ways but most of all, they want them to learn about and accept Jesus into their hearts. If you can help on a monthly basis with any amount--$10, $20, $25 or any amount, it would be greatly appreciated. There are cards on the table in the Narthex and in Fellowship Hall that tell about the Paul s and an address on the back of the card to send your check to their church in Kentucky. This is a good mission project for Please help. ---Edith Rankin, Missions Committee A Letter from Dan Turk in Madagascar Advent, 2013 Mission coworkers Dan and Elizabeth Turk with their children. Dear Friends, Greetings! October was a big month for Madagascar the first round presidential election took place peacefully on October 25 th the first election since the coup d état of The runoff presidential election and legislative elections are scheduled for December 20th. Even as people await election results, Madagascar is still in the throes of the post-coup economic crisis. Life is very difficult for people. The United Nations latest report states that 92% of the people of Madagascar are living below the poverty line. A plague of locusts threatens much of the country. Many children did not return to school this year because their parents couldn t afford to send them, leaving a lost generation of 1.5 million children out of school. Where is the Fiangonan i Jesoa Kristy eto Madagasikara (Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar or FJKM) in the midst of all of this? It is witnessing and trying to bring reconciliation. It is also continuing on with its work of evangelism and outreach. The fact that the FJKM church does not stop its ministry in the midst of crisis, but actually strengthens its ministries, gives hope to many. The HIV rate is still less than 3% in Madagascar. Therefore, much effort is placed on prevention and on caring for those living with HIV and AIDS so that they do not spread it. Every year, FJKM seminary students are trained so that they can be effective educators about HIV and AIDS in their churches and communities. Usually this only involves students at the two seminaries in the capital city. This year, we were invited to do training sessions at the other two seminaries as well. The seminary students learn about the basics of HIV and AIDS while examining what behaviors put people at risk for HIV, and how those behaviors can be prevented. What can the church do to strengthen marriages so that there is less adultery? How can youth be supported so that more choose abstinence before marriage? How can the church help decrease the stigma faced by those living with HIV? The students also receive basics in counseling people living with HIV and AIDS. Many pastors who have received training are now leading the fight in remote rural communities, where most of the understanding about HIV is based on rumors. Please pray for them as they seek to break down the traditions and human behaviors that isolate people and put them at risk. Caring for Those Living With HIV and AIDS The FJKM Development Department (SAF/FJKM) has three dispensaries that are directly involved in caring for people living with HIV and AIDS. This May, we met to review the successes and challenges of their programs. It was encouraging to hear their stories. Dr. Zatovoniaina Rakotondrainibe, the SAF/FJKM doctor at Antsohihy, shared how his dispensary facilitated surgery for an HIV+ woman. In Moramanga, Dr. Fanja Andrianjatovo is working with a young HIV+ prostitute who is interested in leaving prostitution. The project will help with funds and training to help her do so. Shortly after our meeting, Dr. Julienne Rasoazanany in Tsiroanomandidy covered the costs to bring an HIV+ pregnant woman from a remote rural village so that she could deliver her baby in safe Good News from First Presbyterian Church, December 31, 2013, page 4

5 conditions, and so that her newborn could begin anti-retro viral treatment. FJKM HIV Team: Dr. Andrianjatovo (Moramanga), Elizabeth, Dr. Ranaivoarison (Project Coordinator), Dr. Zatovoniaina (Anshohiy), Dr. Rasoazanany (Tsiroanomandidy), May 2013 We are doing well as a family. Robert is enjoying his senior year and is busy with college applications. Frances is a freshman and adjusting well to high school life. Dan s work with the FJKM is bearing fruit at the village level and with FJKM pastors. The FJKM community health work has gone slowly but the outhouses and wells are almost finished now. Please see the web for updates on our work and the situation in Madagascar ( ionconnections/turk-daniel-and-elizabeth). As we approach the Christmas season, there is a mixture of hope and anxiety in the atmosphere. People have hope that the presidential and legislative elections will help bring much needed change to Madagascar. However, given the history of last minute changes in the past four years, there is still concern and uncertainty that the elections will take place fairly and that the results will be respected. In reality, the only real hope is Christ. On Christmas day, Malagasy Christians will be celebrating the birth of our Lord. The results of the December 20 th presidential election will not be in yet. In the midst of this political uncertainty, there will be a great reminder of eternal certainty God s promise of Immanuel. The celebration of Christ s birth will be a reassurance that no matter what happens God is with us. Please continue to lift up the people and country of Madagascar in this election period. Please pray for fair elections December 20 th and that results will be accepted without violence. Please pray for reconciliation. Please pray for those involved in the fight against HIV & AIDS. Please pray that people will be reminded this Christmas season of God s love and presence. Pray that they will know that God walks with them no matter what the circumstance, and that God will not forsake them. We know that God is with us and the people of Madagascar. Your prayers and support are concrete reminders of this fact. We invite your continued prayers, communications and financial gifts. World Mission has a matching gift challenge going on now, so every individual gift from now to December 31 will double in value and impact. Thank you very much for all that you are doing to help God s hope shine in Madagascar. Peace in Christ, Elizabeth Turk Emergency Food Box The Emergency Food Box (EFB) provides temporary help to people in Marshall County in need of basic food supplies. The EFB is open 1:30 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Dedicated volunteers from local churches staff the EFB each weekday afternoon and serve in a variety of support functions. The people receive a nutritionally balanced four-day food supply based on family size, which includes milk and bread. Donated food or cash donations may be brought to the EFB at 109 S. 3 rd Street any weekday afternoon, 1:30 4:30 p.m. Make checks payable to: Emergency Food Box. Money may also be placed in the offering plate or mailed to: EFB, P.O. Box 391, Marshalltown, Iowa These funds are used to buy needed items locally or, if available, from the Food Bank, and to pay handling charges for items we are able to get from the Food Bank of Iowa. Currently, the items that we are in need of the most are rice, corn, carrots, peas, green beans, macaroni & cheese and pork & beans. Other items needed are tuna, canned chicken, peaches, pears, mixed fruit, applesauce and pineapple. These food items are not currently available from the Food Bank in Des Moines in the quantities that are needed. Everything is greatly appreciated. 6 Luke s Ministry Message Bedsores (Pressure Sores or Ulcers) Bedsores, also called pressure sores or ulcers are injuries to the skin and underlying tissues that result from prolonged pressure on the skin. Inadequate blood supply to an area, old age, incontinence (bowel or bladder), lack of weight and poor nutrition and hydration can cause bedsores. Bedsores most often develop on skin that covers bony areas of the body, such as heels, ankles, hips, ears or buttocks. People most at risk for bedsores are those with a medical condition that limits their ability to change positions; people in wheelchairs or those confined to bed for a prolonged time, people who wear braces or an apparatus, have a chronic illness or age. Other causes besides pressure are friction and shearing across the skin. Bedsores can develop quickly and are often difficult to treat. Bedsores fall into four stages based on their severity. Each stage is as follows: Stage 1: Beginning stage with the skin still intact, but the skin appears red and doesn't briefly lighten when touched. The skin my appear ashen, bluish or purple. Stage 2: The ulcer becomes an open area. The outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and part of the underlying layer of skin (dermis) is damaged or lost. Stage 3: The ulcer is now a deep wound. The loss of skin can reveal some amount of fat. Stage 4: The ulcer exhibits large scale loss of tissue. It may expose muscle, ligaments or tendons. Treatment 1. Inspection of the skin should be a routine part of managing the situation 2. Changing positions frequently 3. Massaging the area to get an adequate blood supply to the area 4. Measurement of the ulcer to track the progress 5. Maintain a good nutritional status 6. Maintain adequate hydration of the skin by drinking water and other fluids 7. Antibiotics 8. Pain Management 9. A high protein diet 10. Muscle treatments 11. Surgical repair Stage 2 pressure sores usually heal within weeks, but stage 3 & 4 ulcers are more difficult to treat and may have a focus on managing pain rather than complete healing of the wound. There are now wound management specialists who should be consulted for their expertise. The primary focus should be prevention, but when sores do occur, the above treatments will apply. For those who have chronic illness, are in nursing homes, hospitals or unable to move themselves, family members need to be aware of this possible problem and be diligent to inspect skin and help prevent sores from occurring.
