3 Summer Camp Information on 2017 camp offerings for children and families is available on the Lakeshore Center at Okoboji website: amps/overview.aspx. Check the Summer Camp tab at the top. There is also a calendar showing the weeks when different ages can attend camp on the church website and on Michelle s door. We want children to have this faith-building experience, so camperships are available to all. The form is available on the church s website and Michelle s door. ---Michelle Wilkinson, CE Coordinator Awesome Presbys Awesome Presbys will meet on April 9. They will be participating in the Easter Sunrise service on April 16, and the mini mission trip to camp on April Sunday school Sunday school completed their study of the Prodigal Son on March 19. They are now learning about Easter, particularly about how Jesus was put on trial and Peter s denial. Throughout the spring, the preschool class will learn more about how Jesus cares for us. On Easter Sunday, there will be one multi-age class. This picture shows the Prodigal Son partying away his inheritance. The second one shows him feeding the pigs. Thank you to our March preschool helpers Sue Turbiville and Matt Broshar. ---Michelle Wilkinson, CE Coordinator Wednesday Club Wednesday Club is going strong with an average of 30 children attending each week. We have been learning how to be winners in God s kingdom. The children had lots of fun popping balloons that represented pride and tracing their footprints to remember to follow God no matter what. A few weeks ago, we were learning about Hannah, how God heard her prayers for a child, and the many ways we can pray to God. The kids quickly offered up a classmate and his family for special prayer. His father had just been killed in a terrible car accident, and they were glad for a way to help. The classmate (and his brothers) were Wednesday Club kids a few years ago, and I am glad that this ministry continues to bless them. Thank you to our March Wednesday Club helpers: Wynona Anderson, Marylou Beckmann, Matt Broshar, Jackie Hughes, Nancy Van Wyk, Lee Wilkinson, Cindy Wise, and Phyllis Wubben; youth helpers Makenna Ainsworth, Grace Collins, Carissa King, Drew King, Haley Reed, Haley Reid, and Thomas Wilkinson. Snack providers: Jan Faber, Nancy Kremer, Susan Lawyer, and Carole Permar. Matt was our bus driver and Cindy was the bus rider. Nancy picked up our youth helpers from Miller Middle School. ---Michelle Wilkinson, CE Coordinator 2017 Vacation Bible School VBS will be June 25-29, when we will be exploring Gospel Light s Sonrise National Park. We currently need people to be on our VBS prayer team. Members of this group will pray for VBS in all its aspects: planning, set-up, while it is taking place, and for its lasting impact in the lives of the children and their families. Prayer team members do not need to be in attendance at VBS, though we would like at least some members to be here throughout the week. Please contact Michelle if you would like to be a part of this important group. After Easter, our VBS donation area will be set up where you can select acorns or pinecones for items you wish to loan or donate. These acorns and pine trees will then grow into trees in our Sonrise National Forest in the Narthex. Here are a few items we will be looking for: a kayak or canoe, kayak paddles, tents, national park maps, posters or brochures, artificial Christmas trees (without lights) and wax and candle ends. From the kitchen of Matt Broshar Easter s Dawn On the third day, the friends of Christ coming at daybreak... found the grave empty and the stone rolled away. In varying ways, they realized the new wonder; but even they hardly realized that the world had died in the night. What they were looking at was the first day of a new creation, with a new heaven and a new earth; and in a semblance of the gardener, God walked again in the garden, in the cool not of the evening but of the dawn. G.K. Chesterton PWC News Elizabeth Circle will meet April 13, at 1:30 p.m. in the Lower Lounge. Sarah Circle will meet on Tuesday, April 18, at 9:15 a.m. in the Lower Lounge. Luke s Ministry Whooping Cough Whooping cough, which is also called pertussis, is a serious disease that can cause babies to stop breathing. It is very contagious, and is spread by coughing or sneezing while in close contact with others, or who breathe in the bacteria that causes the disease. About half of the babies under one-year of age who get whooping cough end up in the hospital, and a few even die from the disease. Many babies who get whooping cough are infected by parents, siblings or other caregivers. There are two vaccines used in the United States to help prevent whooping cough; DTap and Tdap. These vaccines also provide protection against tetanus and diphtheria. Children under seven yearsold get DTap, while older children and adults get Tdap. Make sure your babies get all the recommended doses at the appropriate time sequence. These antibodies protect the child from some of the more serious complications of whooping cough such as pneumonia and encephalopathy (disease of the brain). Whooping cough starts like the common cold, with a runny nose or congestion, then proceeds to coughing and sneezing, then to prolonged lengthy coughing. If this occurs, see the doctor immediately. This vaccine can be given to mothers in their 27th and 36th weeks of pregnancy to provide short-term protection. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends five injections to babies who are old enough to receive the vaccination, beginning at two months of age. All other people caring for an infected infant should be up-to-date with their immunizations before any contact with the baby. With immigration from various countries, we may see an increase in diseases due to the lack of immunizations in other countries. Missions First Presbyterian Church of Marshalltown supports many missions through financial contributions, prayer, correspondence and volunteer support. Three of these are detailed below. WellSpring Missions: Clean water is the life blood of developing nations. South Sudan, and particularly Jonglei Province have been devastated with over 50 years of war only to be hit with a recent civil war within this newly formed country. WellSpring Missions was formed to drill water wells for villages without clean water in South Sudan. Initial drilling took place in the village area of Old Fangak, which prior to three years ago, was around 20,000 people with five wells. Now it is over Good News from First Presbyterian Church, March 31, 2017, page 4

5 100,000 people with still only five wells. Water borne diseases are running rampant as the population is increasing with the flood of displaced persons. WellSpring Missions was in its infancy when one of the founding families joined our church. In welcoming these new members, we found a new opportunity for mission work with a very personal and trusted local involvement. One of these mission leaders had journeyed to South Sudan to participate in drilling their first well. He has since kept our congregation updated on progress and brought other active WellSpring participants to present updates at our church and to our Missions Committee, which has contributed financially in recent years. The church also collected donations of tools and materials which have been sent to South Sudan. The organization s current goal is to fund the infrastructure to create, train, outfit, and develop three entrepreneurial teams or companies to drill wells in the Jonglei Province of South Sudan. The teams will be made up of people native to the area. The effort includes the purchase of equipment as well as training in the technical skills and in business skills required to drill and maintain the wells. As of early 2017, the equipment is in South Sudan waiting for dry season weather and sufficient political security to enable transport to the sites for drilling. Our church s current commitment to WellSpring is fund the costs for drilling one well in the region. We often hear the saying, Give a man a fish and you will satisfy his hunger today; teach him to fish and you can satisfy his hunger forever. This thought is strong in how WellSpring plans to bring clean water to the depressed area they have chosen to serve. There are known to be around 1500 defunct water wells in the province. Most of these were probably drilled and opened, but then not monitored and maintained. To avoid continuation of this trend, WellSpring s three trained teams, each with a leader, will operate on a business plan to sell a well to a community for a very affordable price and include training for community-identified local leaders in the creation, operation, and maintenance of the well. Christ showed us that human needs need to be addressed before we can be most receptive to the gospel. An entrée to evangelism is often required. The well drilling addresses needs and provides the entrée. The WellSpring teams will be equipped to use open opportunities to share the Word. WellSpring s South Sudan/Kenya based Executive Director, James, while not ordained, leads worship services at the work sites. WellSpring personnel have facilitated establishment of a Lutheran church in Old Fangak with an ordained pastor who has since, tragically been killed in the ongoing violence in the country. Evangelism is a strong part of the ministry s objectives. The predominant religion in this area is Christianity, but with all the strife, there are many believers in need of reinforcement of their faith, and there are many non-believers who need an introduction to the Good News. The Emergency Food Box is currently in need of the following food items: diced tomatoes, canned fruit, chicken noodle soup, tomato soup, pork and beans. Food items or monetary (check/cash) donations may be brought to the EFB (109 S. 3rd St.) any weekday afternoon, 1:30-4:30. Please make checks payable to: Emergency Food Box. Our mailing address is: EFB, P.O. Box 391, Marshalltown, IA Donated funds are used to buy food items from the Food Bank of Iowa and locally. We are always looking for Food Box volunteers. EFB is run by an all-volunteer staff, and all food items are donated, or purchased from the money contributed. The Evans Family would like you all to know how much we appreciate you and your support at this time of both sorrow and joy with the passing of Jean. They will be sent per your requests. Those that were sent to the Jean Evans Memorial Fund will be donated to the Alzheimer s Association. Mom/grandma loved this church and the people in it. Once again, thank you all so much. ---The Evans Family Good News from First Presbyterian Church, March 31, 2017, page 5

6 our faithful workers at the House of Compassion during the month of March: Diane & Matt Broshar, Shirley Egli, Mike Gerbo, Michele Hala, Darrell Meyer, Margaret Meyer, Natalia & Stefan Peng, Estelle Perkins, Carolyn Wilkinson, Lee & Michelle Wilkinson and Barb Wollam. ---all the PWC ladies who helped with the Lenten Breakfast. Easter is almost upon us, and I want to remind you that the more you participate in the events of Holy Week, the more meaningful your Easter experience will be. The emotional and spiritual movement from the Triumphal Entry to Easter is not very great. People hail Jesus as their savior and then He rises from the dead and we celebrate that. But when you go from the Triumphal Entry to the upper room on Maundy Thursday, where He washes His disciple s feet, institutes a memorial meal The Last Supper and is betrayed by a friend and arrested. Then you begin a spiritual and emotional journey that has the power to impact your life. If you follow Jesus from the trail before the Sanhedrin to the trial before Pilate, then your Journey goes deeper. Jesus goes to the cross for us and we need to join Him there to understand the depth of love God has for us. From the cross Jesus goes into the tomb and we wait with Him. Then Easter Sunday has a radical change for us. When you have sat with the dead Jesus for three days then the living Jesus of the resurrection seems so much more alive! This year, we will again have our Maundy Thursday Communion service in the Fellowship Hall starting with a potluck meal at 5:30 with the service starting around 6:30. On Friday, you can join myself and other Christians from our community at MCC s DeJardin Hall at 6:30. We will read the prophecies of the Old Testament and their fulfillment by Jesus on the cross, sing and share Communion as a community of faith. We hope that it will be a simple but powerful service as we remember Christ s atonement for each of us. Then on Easter, we will have a Sunrise service at 7:00 a.m. focus on going from darkness to light, death to life! The Youth will have breakfast ready at 7:45 and will serve until 8:45. The main Easter service will be at 9:00 a.m. Sunday School for all ages will follow at around 10:30. We hope to see you at many if not all of these opportunities to worship God during Holy Week.
