Use of Church Facilities Often times, people want to use a room or rooms in the church or use the Gathering Place for their activities. For purposes of organization and so we aren t double booking a specific area in the church, please contact the church office to schedule the use of the area you want to use. This way, we can check the calendar to see if there is something else going on at the church to assure there is ample parking for everyone. If you talk to one of the other church staff about using a particular space, you still need to check with the office to make sure the space you want isn t already being used. Then the room/s you want can be scheduled on the calendar. Seniors Recognized The graduating high school seniors will be recognized Sunday, May 19, during the worship service. 3 Wednesday Club By the time you read this, Wednesday Club will be over for this year. It s been a good year. We ve seen our numbers decrease as some of our friends moved and others decided to spend their Wednesday afternoons a different way. We were talking the other day about how much growth we ve seen in the kids. God (with a little maturity sprinkled in) really works wonders, and all of the people who have been involved with Wednesday Club in one way or another have made a difference for the children involved. Thank you! In April, we finished learning the Easter story. We used a couple of the nice, short cartoons from YouTube that told the story in ways that kids understand. The children also made Easter wreaths so they can remember the story at home. They asked a lot of interesting questions about the story, too. The kids were listening! Rottink, Fran Smith, Lee Wilkinson, Bethany Wirin, and Cindy Wise. And Youth Helpers: Marcus Henze, Ellen Podhajsky, Sam and Peter Wilkinson. A special thank you goes to Bonnie Bradbury for watching Ben and Betsy, and to Valerie King and Dave Beckmann for arranging for Wednesday Club T-shirts. Thank you to all who provided food or helped with the year-end picnic. In-carnation The official flower of Mother s Day is the carnation, the favorite flower of the mom of the holiday s founder, Anna Jarvis. Over time, the custom arose of wearing a white carnation on Mother s Day if your mother has died and a red one if she s living. In fact, many carnation colors have special meanings. Pink carries the richest Christian symbolism. According to legend, carnations first appeared on earth as Mary wept while watching Jesus carry his cross. Where her tears fell, there appeared pink carnations, symbolizing a mother s undying love. According to one theory, the English word for carnation comes from carnis, Latin for flesh. From the same root comes incarnation, God s coming to earth in flesh. Thus, carnations remind us of our loving mothers as well as our loving Savior. Church Women United will meet Friday, Also, in April, we worked on our short program for the parents and families. The kids chose to perform two skits, and we sang a couple of songs and shared VBS and summer Sunday school information with the parents. Pastor Rich grilled and everyone enjoyed the picnic in the Gathering Place. Thank you to our superlative volunteers for April: Bus drivers Orlyn Langenbau and Jon Rottink. Bus riders: Marylou Beckmann and Fran Smith. Snack providers: Jan Faber, Jan Stubbs, Lee Wilkinson and Cindy Wise. Helpers: Doug Bacon, Marylou Beckmann, Angie Pietig, Jon May 3, at 9:15 a.m. for May Fellowship Day at the Fisher Community Center. Wynona and Steve Anderson will be leading Faith Lessons---That the World May Know. This is a video series of Bible studies filmed on location in Israel and Turkey with historian Ray VanderLaan. Bethany and Bruce Wirin will be leading a video-based discussion on marriage. More information will be forthcoming. Donations are needed to help make VBS 2013 a success. If you haven t checked the support column in the Narthex, please do so. There are many items Pentecost Passion Nineteenth-century evangelist Dwight L. Moody was walking down a New York City street, thinking about a sentence he d heard: The world has yet to see what God can do with a man who is wholly yielded to him. Suddenly Moody felt a great yearning and cried out, O God, make me that man! He was so overwhelmed with God s love and with heartfelt passion to reach lost people that he had to stop at a friend s house to rest. In Birth of the Body, Ray Stedman says this is what Luke is talking about when he describes the events of Pentecost. When John the Baptist predicted that Jesus would come and baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire, he meant that there would be an unexplainable passion about the church. As we feel the Pentecost passion, let s yield ourselves wholly to God and see what he does with us! Good News from First Presbyterian Church, April 30, 2013, page 4

5 Library News We now have a great new book in our library entitled Joni and Ken. It is the beautiful story of Joni Eareckson and Ken Tada falling in love. However, they struggle in their marriage as Ken is overwhelmed with the unending demands of caring for a woman with quadriplegia. Joni faces profound, lifelong disability, chronic pain and most recently, cancer. See how they find in Christ the strength and power to renew their marriage and face the future together. The book is available on the bookshelf in the Narthex. Jonathan s House Central African Republic (CAR) Update, April 1, 2013 The Central African Republic is facing extremely difficult circumstances. The situation has been largely ignored by the media due to CAR s lack of global economic influence. The political crisis which started in December continues, and armed rebels control the town of Sibut, where the orphanage is located. The rebels are from an area of Muslim influence in northern CAR, and may also be from Chad and South Sudan. Thankfully, they have not harmed the orphans, the children, or the staff. However, the people of Sibut and most of CAR have suffered greatly. Buildings and homes have been looted and destroyed, and church pews have been used for firewood. Many of the residents have left their homes to seek refuge in the forest, while living without clean water, medical care, shelter, or adequate food. People are afraid to go to work in the fields, and there is a chronic food shortage throughout CAR. Most humanitarian aid groups no longer operate in the rebel controlled areas. Although an agreement was reached between the rebels and the government of CAR, neither side met their obligations. On March 20, the rebels called off the fragile ceasefire agreement. On March 23, the capital city of Bangui was overthrown by the rebel forces, called Seleka, and the President fled to Cameroon. The constitution appears to have been dissolved and a new government will be formed. Clear authority in CAR has not yet been established. As of April 1, violence on the streets is not common but the residents there are nervous and fearful. The looting in Bangui has been widespread, with the United Nations, UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders, and the Red Cross all suffering heavy losses. Getting food, supplies, and employee salaries to the orphanage in Sibut has been challenging. Cell phone and internet service to Sibut and much of the country has been sabotaged. News from the orphanage now comes by messengers who attempt to travel between Bangui and Sibut. Five orphans are now living at the orphanage, and each of them has shown great progress in their new home. Each of these children came from very difficult and dangerous circumstances. It is hard to imagine the conditions they would each be enduring today if the Lord had not had a plan to give them a loving home. Because the rebels have closed the roads in and around Sibut, many people are hiding in the forests, and our ability to seek and rescue orphans in need is limited and dangerous. The need for orphan care will be great when people return to their neighborhoods. Because schools are not operating due to the crisis, the children s daily education is continuing at the orphanage. Our plans to repair and support the Christian School for the school year in Sibut are still in place. Now that the orphanage is in place and able to assist needy orphans, our intention is to use the orphanage as a base for Christian outreach into the town of Sibut when the crisis ends. The need for resources to meet the needs of orphan care, Christian education/outreach, and emergency assistance has never been greater. Currently, many aid groups are waiting to return to CAR when the crisis ends. While many groups focus solely on humanitarian aid, our mission will also include the gospel of Jesus Christ in all that we do. During this difficult time, our dependence upon the Lord for all things is especially evident. Your prayers and support are greatly appreciated. Please pray for peace in the Central African Republic and for all of the people who are suffering because of the political crisis. Emergency Food Box Help us to serve those in need. The Emergency Food Box has seen an increase in the number of families throughout all of Marshall County needing help. Your offerings of food (please note the dates on the canned items) and/or cash donations are greatly needed and appreciated. The Food Box is solely supported by the contributions of generous people like you. Currently, the items that we are in need of the most are corn, peas, green beans, carrots, stewed tomatoes, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti sauce, Good News from First Presbyterian Church, April 30, 2013, page 5

6 and pork & beans. Other items needed are canned chicken, tuna, peaches, pears, mixed fruit, applesauce and pineapple. These food items are not currently available from the Food Bank in Des Moines in the quantities that we need. If you would prefer to give a monetary donation, you may send a check or cash at any time. Make checks payable to: Emergency Food Box. Money may also be placed in your offering plate or mailed to: EFB, P.O. Box 391, Marshalltown, Iowa These funds are used to buy needed items locally or, if available, from the Food Bank, and to pay handling charges for items we are able to get from the Food Bank of Iowa. Thank you for your past contributions and please consider the increased need for food and/or contributions. Everything is greatly appreciated. The key factor is to prevent dehydration. If your family includes children, it is a good idea to have a prepared oral solution such as Pediolyte on hand. To prevent Noro virus: 1. Wash your hands thoroughly 2. Avoid contaminated food or water 3. Stay home from work--you can be contagious as long as 3 days after the symptoms end. 4. Disinfect contaminated areas with a solution of detergent and chlorine bleach. Where possible, allow cleaning solutions to stay on surfaces longer than 10 minutes. Luke s Ministry Message Noro Virus Infection Noro Viruses are a group of viruses that cause gastro enteritis or an inflammation in the lining of the stomach and intestines. Other names used in the past for Noro Virus are Norwalk Virus, Viral gastroenteritis, or stomach flu---not related to the flu (influenza) which is a respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. Noro Viruses are a major cause of gastrointestinal illness in closed and crowded environments such as hospitals, nursing homes and cruise ships. It is highly contagious by close contact with an infected person and is commonly spread through food or water contaminated by fecal material during preparation and touching contaminated items. Symptoms include: 1. Nausea and vomiting 2. Abdominal pain and cramps 3. Watery or loose stools 4. Weight loss 5. Malaise Typically, people with Noro Virus infections develop diarrhea and abdominal pain and begin to vomit within hours of exposure. Symptoms last one or two days and most people recover without treatment. However, people, especially infants, older adults and people with other underlying diseases, vomiting and diarrhea can be severely dehydrating and require medical attention. Seek medical attention if you develop diarrhea that doesn t clear within several days. Also, call the doctor if experiencing severe vomiting, bloody stools, abdominal pain or dehydration. Congratulations to Richard and Carol Ploeger who will celebrate their 60 th wedding anniversary Thursday, June 6. I would like to thank all of you for your prayers, concerns and cards these past couple of months as I've recovered from my double knee surgery. Through all the years of visiting Mary, Pat and mom, I have developed many cherished relationships there and feel part of your extended church family. It was great having Mary here in California to help care for me and get in some good sister time too. I am doing better - getting around on my own again, but still working hard in therapy. I m looking forward to seeing many of you on my next trip to Iowa Thanks again and may God continue to bless all of you as you serve Him. ---Marlene Snyder, Mary Hemming s Sister ---our faithful workers at the House of Compassion during the month of April: Marylou Beckmann, Dean Baker, Joe Holubar, Ed Jackson, Connie Montover, Edith Rankin, Agnes Ward, Don & Donia Wilson, Dave Wilson, Barb Wollam and Carolyn Wilkinson. ---Mary & Dean Baker and Dick & Barb McBride, who were the faithful HOC shelter monitors in April.
