Stewardship: God s Abundance Commitment Sunday, October 15, 2017, quickly approaches and our story of faith continues in abundance. For several weeks you have been hearing about, reading about, and participating in the stories of how we can grow, share, serve, and be grateful for our many blessings. These have demonstrated what Christ is doing through us as evident in the creativity of our members and friends as well as in the funds multiplied and harvest readied. Our pledges on October 15 represent our personal financial commitments for a new year of ministry and mission in and through First Presbyterian Church Greenville. As Paul wrote to the Corinthians: Each of you must make up your own mind about how much to give. But don t feel sorry that you must give and don t feel that you are forced to give. God loves people who love to give. You should be receiving in the mail very soon a commitment card and Worship Plus Two sheet. Please fill them out and let us know how we can count on you in the coming year with your gifts of time and resources. Bring them to worship on October 15 or bring to the church office. If you need a commitment card, please call or stop by the office, Make sure to add your hand to our tree to show how you use your gifts at FPC! Share the Journey; Grow in Faith

8 First Presbyterian Church 1400 South Elm Street Greenville, NC Phone: Fax: CHURCH DIRECTORY NON-PROF. ORG. U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 264 Visit us online: William K. Neely, Pastor Amanda Hines, Interim Associate Pastor Kathleen Williams, Director of Christian Education Karrie Rushing, Director of Music Brian Dilday, Youth Director Brad Collier, Organist Deborah Durham, Financial Administrator Janice Gray, Office Administrator Terrence Clemons, Sexton LABEL PASTOR S WORD Dear Brothers and Sisters, Every fall for the last 15 years, the Stewardship Committee has tried to instill in us our need for giving. The scripture of course is abundantly clear that one of the ways that we demonstrate our thanksgiving for all that God has done for us in Jesus Christ is by giving back to the work of the church in order that the gospel might be shared. One of the realities of church life in 2017 is that the need for inconvenient giving has not translated from one generation to the next. By inconvenient giving, I m talking about a commitment to give that makes us make choices between spending money on our own pleasures and giving to support the work of Christ in this place we call First Presbyterian Church, Greenville, NC. I must admit that after nearly 43 years of ministry, I am still at a loss for words that would help impart the absolute necessity of each member of the congregation giving and giving sacrificially. The danger of course is that those of you who are already giving at a level that demands sacrifice will feel that the church is unappreciative of what you do. Please be assured this is not so. Conversely, there is the reality that for those of us who choose not to give or to give very little, nothing anyone can say will move you to the point of truly understanding the joy of graceful giving giving that fully comprehends all that God has given you. So let me put it in very practical terms. If you use one of our parking spaces on Sunday morning, that parking space would normally rent for $5,200 a year, at least that s what East Carolina University thinks they are worth. If your children attend youth group, that is a value of roughly $30 a week. If you attend worship, that cost because of the staff and the resources it takes to have worship, is about $50 a week. I could go on about Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and all of the other programs that we offer, suffice it to say that without your giving, none of what happens in this place would be possible and while many of you are more than generous, there are some who seem to be clueless to the benefit that others are providing. It is as if you were to go to McDonald s and expect for your family to eat free because others are paying. While I know this may seem harsh to some, I m not going to be here next year to encourage you to learn to give but if the church is to survive and thrive, it will be because all of us become inconvenient givers. Bill
