5 P AGE 5 We have been incredibly blessed over the summer by those who have shared their musical talents with us in worship. So far, Morgan Lane, Mallory Williams, Lynne Marks & Wilma Shackelford, Alida Lee, and John Morrow & Gerald McGowan have offered special music during the service while the choir is on summer hiatus. There is more to come for the next couple of Sundays before the choir is back in full force, so be sure and let these talented folks know how much we appreciate their willingness to share their gifts in worship! Everyone is setting up fall calendars, and the Music Ministry is no exception. Make note of the following start-up dates so you don't miss anything! Westminster Bell Choir - August 19th Chancel Choir - August 20th Children's Choirs (PreK-5th grade) - Sept. 14th ALL the ensembles are open to anyone who has an interest in music - there is never an audition required. We've even expanded the choir room over the summer to fit all the additional singers (thanks to Dick Marks and Gerald McGowan for building the riser extension!). There is child care available during Chancel Choir rehearsals. We also have open spots for bell ringers - regulars and substitutes - for the coming year. Contact me for more information about how you can use your talents in the evergrowing Music Ministry! Karrie Rushing, Director of Music New Church Sign Policy We have been informed that our temporary signage policy is in violation of city code. This refers to any banners or signs that we have on our church grounds. Going forward, any signage must be pre-approved by the city and a permit obtained. Temporary signs may only be up for seven days. If you wish to put up a sign at church, you must pick up an application form in the office, fill it out and return it to the office for submission to the city. The Administration Ministry is in the process of establishing a committee to review the signage issue to include all signage on the church grounds. We would ask that you bear with us while the committee completes its due diligence and subsequently makes its recommendations regarding permanent and temporary signage. Thank you for your cooperation as we make this transition to comply with city code. FPC Staff Changes Over the summer, the Session has approved several changes in our staff at FPC. In order to provide a program to students when they return, Assistant to the Pastor Steve Prevatte will spend the majority of his time directing the Campus Ministry program as the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) continues to search for a permanent campus minister. Rev. Carol Pierson has been hired to pick up some of the responsibilities Steve has relinquished to take this new role. Carol will also help the Session and congregation develop a mission study (known in the business world as longrange planning), as Bill Neely mentioned in last week s newsletter. Steve is working toward transferring his ministerial status to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and has been taking a course in Presbyterian polity this summer. He will take a couple more courses this fall and then take the PCUSA ordination exams. Once that process is complete, he will be eligible to receive a call in the PCUSA. We wish Steve well in this endeavor. Carol is a 2011 graduate of Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, and she has had experience as an Associate Pastor and a Director of Christian Education. She has had Interim Ministry training, which includes developing a mission study. She is being hired as Temporary Supply Associate Pastor, beginning August 16, although she is preaching the first three Sundays in August while Bill is away. This will be a month-to-month renewable position, and either party may dissolve the contract with 30-days notice. This flexibility will allow the Campus Ministry PNC to call a permanent pastor for that role as well as allow Carol to continue her search for a permanent pastoral position. Most of you know that Office Administrator Deborah Durham resigned in May because of back problems. The Session has created a half-time position of Financial Administrator to assume many of the responsibilities Deborah had. Both Deborah and her doctor feel that she could return to work no more than five hours a day, and the Session is pleased that Deborah will return and take on this part-time position, effective August 16. Janice Gray has assumed the position of Office Administrator with a slightly re-written job description.

6 PAGE 6 Youth News: It has been a GREAT summer but all good things must come to an end so better things can begin. That's right--the start of the new school year means a new start to the Youth program here at FPC. I am very excited about all the upcoming events--old and new. We welcome any rising 6th graders -- seniors to join our program. Even if you haven't joined in the past, it's not too late. Remember that you can ALWAYS bring friends. Ultimate Frisbee on Wednesday, August 6th at 7:00pm. We play at the ECU intramural fields behind the Belk building off of Charles Blvd across from the ECU track complex. We are kicking the year off on Saturday, August 23rd by traveling to the Burgwyn's Lake House for a Day of Fun! Please plan to join us for this great excursion. Tubing, paddle boarding, swimming, jet skiing, and corn hole will be part of the day's activities. We will meet at the church at 8:30 am so that we can be on the road by 9. We will head back to Greenville at 6pm to arrive back by 8:30pm. More information will be coming but I need to begin to get a count of how many people might be joining us so I can figure out the cost of food and travels. Please contact me as soon as possible to RSVP. Attention all rising 8th graders and students who have not been confirmed--please be on the lookout for more information about this part of your faith journey. I plan on beginning classes in the Fall. Church-wide Picnic--September 7th at Boyd Lee Park. This will be our youth program for that night. September 7th is also Rally Day so please plan to attend Sunday School to meet your teachers and get the year started off right. Sunday School is a vital part of our Christian education and I highly encourage everyone to attend. September 14th: Parent Meeting/Potluck Dinner-- this is the informational meeting for youth and is taking the place of the Sunday morning meeting. We will begin at 6 and childcare will be provided for younger siblings. Dinner will be at 6:00 and the meeting will begin at 6:30, and at that time, the youth will go out and play games with the advisors. Please bring a covered dish to share with everyone. Paperwork will be distributed that evening and you will receive the calendar for the semester. We will wrap up by 7:30. We have done a lot of great things through missions, service, education, and fellowship throughout this past year and summer. I am looking forward to continuing the great things that we have started and moving on to bigger and better things. Thank you for all of your support. I love the enthusiasm towards the youth program and helping us continue our faith journey throughout the coming school year. Brian Dilday, Youth Director ( ) Share the Journey; Grow in Faith

8 First Presbyterian Church 1400 South Elm Street Greenville, NC Phone: Fax: NON-PROF. ORG. U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 264 GREENVILLE, NC CHURCH DIRECTORY William K. Neely, Pastor Steve Prevatte, Campus Minister and Assistant to the Pastor Kathleen Williams, Director of Christian Education Carol Pierson, Temporary Supply Associate Pastor Karrie Rushing, Director of Music Brian Dilday, Youth Director Brad Collier, Organist Deborah Durham, Financial Administrator Janice Gray, Office Administrator Terrence Clemons, Sexton LABEL Visit us online: PASTOR S WORD Everyone s Job, Everyone s Joy Growing up in a pastor s home and having finished nearly 20 years of full time ministry, I can t tell you how many times I have heard the phrase, That s the Pastor s job when referring to some aspect of church life. Sometimes that meant heading up to the church at 11pm on a stormy night to place trashcans under a leaky ceiling. It was not unusual to receive a call from an eagle-eyed church member asking us to investigate a light left on at the church, which always seemed to occur late at night. Probably the strangest of these occurred when I had to help my Dad catch a bat that had somehow made its way to the youth room of Wendell Baptist Church. Coaxing a live bat into a bucket in the church youth room may sound like a Ray Stevens song, but trust me, it is not easy! Undoubtedly, these situations are sometimes part of the job for most pastors. However, the occasions that have caused me to grimace after hearing it s the Pastor s job always involve ministry. Ministry is not just the job (or better yet, the opportunity) of the clergy. The opportunity and responsibility for doing ministry has been given to all Christians. The upcoming Stephen Ministry training class will begin on Monday, September 8 th at 6:30 pm. This will offer you a chance to be trained and equipped for doing important ministry. Talk to any of our Stephen Ministers; they will tell you it is a joyous privilege to share Christ s love with others through Stephen Ministry. Is this chance for ministry the one for you? Should you fill out an application to be a part of this ministry? Think about it! Steve Prevatte
