5 Carol Pierson offered a prayer which included those mentioned in concerns and celebrations. SPECIAL ORDER OF THE DAY The Moderator introduced John Baugher, a member of the church-sponsored Scout Troop 452, who presented his plans to create a Prayer Labyrinth on the church grounds as his Eagle Scout project. The cost of the materials will be around $5000-$6000, for which a major donor has been identified. Approximately $1000 in further costs will be raised by the scout, in part through a proposed meal at the church. Elder Vinse Bowers will oversee the construction part of the project. A motion passed (West/Hayes) to give permission to John to carry out this project and raise funds through the church. SPECIAL ORDER OF THE DAY Examination and approval of Elders-elect: the Moderator began the examination by asking each to tell either something they learned or that impressed them during their Elder training and what excited them about becoming an Elder at this time. He then opened the floor for other questions from the Session. After there were no further questions, a motion passed (Dean/Perry) to sustain this part of their examination for ordination/installation. MINUTES Minutes were approved for the stated Session meeting of October 19, 2014 and the called Session meetings of October 26 and November 2 and 9, MEMBERSHIP ITEM: A motion passed to approve a letter of transfer for Joshua Prosser to The Memorial Baptist Church of Greenville, NC. MINISTRY REPORTS Administration Ministry (Mark Hayes) A building use request was received from choir Scholar Singer Casey Daniel on behalf of the East Carolina University student chapter of the American Choral Directors Association to use the Sanctuary on Friday, December 5, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to present a holiday recital. This is a free concert, but attendees would be asked to make a love donation to support the group s attendance at the ACDA national conference in Salt Lake City, UT in February. A motion to approve this request (Perry/Eckert) was offered. Discussion centered around whether the fund-raising aspect of this concert was appropriate and might be a violation of church policy. An amendment to the motion was proposed to approve the request with the provision that attendees could be told at the recital that donations to the group through East Carolina University would be appreciated. The amended motion passed. John Ogle advised the Session of the work being done by the Mission Study Team: a) the congregation has been invited to participate in a survey that is currently on-line or available in print form; b) congregational gatherings will be held during the Lenten season to help gather information; c) a list of community leaders and organizations was presented from whom information will be sought about needs in the surrounding area and how FPC could help meet those needs; Session members were asked to identify one or more of these leaders/organizations that they could contact to obtain this information. Elder Hayes indicated that the Session needed to elect four members to serve on the 2015 church Nominating Committee, and he asked for volunteers to serve. Alisa Fraley, Eric Money, Georganne Perry, and Ashley Rudolph volunteered and were elected by acclamation. Elder Jim Young reported that results from the stewardship campaign and budget for 2015 are being reconciled. He said most of the budget increase will be in required personnel cost increases. The finance committee hopes to be able to meet all Ministry requests and the personnel increases, since income appears to be significantly ahead of previous years. They hope to present a final budget for approval in December. Mission Ministry (Alisa Fraley) Page 5 of 32

6 A motion passed from the Ministry to use the proceeds from the Christmas Eve Offering to help with the purchase of kitchen equipment for the new Greenville Community Shelters building. The Ministry approved a $1000 request from the Youth towards their 2014 Christmas project, and indicated they will visit Winterville Manor on December 14 to deliver gifts from the angel tree and serve refreshments. Worship Ministry (Chris Kessler) The Ministry is working on preparations for the Advent season. Membership Ministry (Harding Sugg) A motion passed from the Ministry to approve re-scheduling the blood drive to February 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Ministry reported that communion was served to 3 homebound individuals on October 12 and that the Wild Game Feast on November 12 was a success. Education Ministry (Kathy Howard) A motion passed from the Ministry to approve a Moment for Ministry on November 16 to talk about the cake auction and other Youth projects that are raising funds for their Christmas project. The Ministry reported that it is working on planning for the Advent Festival, that First Friday meetings continue to be popular, that there will be no Godly Play on November 30 because of the greening of the church, and that there will be no Sunday School or Godly Play on December 28. Treasurer s Report Treasurer Perry called attention to the financial report through October, and noted that revenues (at 69% of budget) are running behind the 83% expected. He reminded Session, however, that plate offerings in November and December usually run high, and that most people pay off their pledges during this season, too, so he expects that the final accounting through December will be all right. OTHER BUSINESS Vernette Dean gave a report as a Commissioner to the 93 rd stated meeting of New Hope Presbytery on October 25 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. The Moderator informed the Session that the Pastor Nominating Committee for the ECU Campus Ministry/Associate Pastor position has disbanded. Steve Prevatte will continue in his role as acting Campus Minister through the spring. The meeting was adjourned after a closing prayer by Bill Neely.. William K. Neely, Moderator Richard Marks, Clerk of Session Page 6 of 32
