3 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 23, 2016 Notes From The Pastor's Pen Hello, In case you hadn t noticed we are in an election year and it is coming up in just a few weeks. A few weeks ago the Archdiocese had a meeting for priests and talked about the election. Dr. Ed Hogan presented a tool he put together to help look at the candidates, to weigh all the issues and to give each issue the proper weight he said, which seems like a good idea. It just had four steps: rank the issues within their categories, score each candidate on each issue, assign a weight for each issue, then calculate a weighted score for each candidate. Rank the Issue there are many issues but to get somewhere just consider your top 5 issues in each of two categories, Intrinsically Evil Acts (that we can never do or support such as: abortion, euthanasia, embryo-destructive research, acts of racism, treating the poor as disposable, same-sex marriage, ), and other serious moral concerns (issues we cannot ignore such as: the economy, foreign policy, immigration, approach to terrorism, the environment, systematic racism, health care, religious liberty, appointing supreme court judges, ). Remember, you decide the issues. Score Each Candidate on Each Issue on a scale from -5 to +5, what is the likelihood that this candidate s actions will reflect Catholic teaching on this issue. Just make a column for the issues and then a column for each candidate you are comparing and assign a number you think appropriate for that candidate on that issue. Remember, you score the candidates. Assign a Weight for Each Issue determine how much weight you want to give each issue but remember you cannot have any issue have an infinite weight and you cannot have any issue have zero weight (or you can find another issue). You might consider for your top 5 issues to have weighting factors of 7, 4, 3, 2, and 1, and then for the intrinsically evil issues multiply it by 2 whereas the moral concerns would only be multiplied by 1. Again, you decide what weighting factor to use. If you are using this for various races (president, governor, senator ) you might add another weighting percentage depending on how much influence this post can have on this issue [Supreme court judges: president (1), governor (0), senator (.1)] Calculate the Weighted Scores now do the math. For each candidate multiply the candidate s score on each issue by the weight for that issue, then add up these weighted scores for all of the issues for the candidate. This doesn t mean that if one wins by.2 points you are going to vote for them, but hopefully it is going to help you think about the variety of concerns and issues that matter, and hopefully be able to discuss some of these with others, about what the most important issues are, how important they are, and on each of them where each candidate really stands. Maybe you want to add another factor called Electability that even screens a candidate as to whether they make it on your list or not, or that once you ve calculated your weighted score you need to consider what your vote might mean. We have a great freedoms and responsibilities in our country, we need to use them to help our country and the world. Peace, Fr. Nick Mass Intentions Monday, Oct. 24 St Anthony Mary Claret, Bishop 6:30 am Helene Schweitzer Briccio Cadiz Tuesday, Oct.25 8:00 am C. J.
