1 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 30, 2015 Mass Intentions SOME THOUGHTS FROM FATHER SCHAAB PRIVATE CONFESSIONS AMONG LAY PEOPLE Through the Irish monks and their evangelization of peoples, the practice of confession and spiritual direction spread throughout much of Europe. By the early seventh century private confession had spread from the monastery to the laity. The practice of frequent confession and the practice of spiritual direction were easily adapted to the needs of the laity. The Benedictine Rule stresses the involvement of the entire community in the ongoing work of sanctification. In this way all kinds of spiritual guides spiritual directors emerged. Since the emphasis was on spiritual growth of individuals, religious, both men and women, became guides for others. It became more important to have a holy director than to have a professed religious director. By the 7th century, a system had evolved in the Western church that promoted private confession to a priest. This system was at first more pastoral than penitential in nature, more focused on spiritual direction than on penitential practice and absolution. Irish monks on the continent took the old public penances and adapted it to suit the requirements of a mission field and a half-converted church. In doing so, these monks restored penance to its proper place as a means of renewing and deepening Christ life. The practices of the laying on of hands, fasting, almsgiving, and prayer were features of the old system as well as the new, and bishops and priests - rather than lay people- continued to be the ones to hear the penitent s confession, administer penance, and pronounce forgiveness or restoration of the sinner to full communion. The priest in the role of confessor is both a counselor and physician of the soul. Monasteries played a leading role in promoting the practice of private confession among Christians, either by stressing the need for an individual teacher, mentor, or spiritual director or by making plain the daily challenges of living in a close-knit community that formed the habit of examining one s conscience, confessing one s thoughts and deeds, and practicing forgiveness and forbearance toward one another. As priests and bishops began promoting the practice of frequent confession they also found themselves limited in how much time and effort they could give the individual penitent. Many lay people began to associate private confession with two elements: the confession itself, which was executed in a perfunctory and mechanical way, and the penance assigned. Dear St. Joseph Parishioners, Recently I have been receiving more and more prayer requests in the Parish Office. I always stop and pray with whomever might be in my office and then pass the request along to some friends. I was wondering if is time that we begin a Prayer Chain again. Pat Friday, Sept. 4, FATIMA EUCHARISTIC VIGIL When Our Lady appeared at Fatima she requested that we pray the rosary every day, make sacrifices for sinners and offer prayers of Eucharistic Adoration. In this troubled world our response to her request is more urgent now that ever. On the first Friday of each month the World Apostolate of Fatima sponsors a Eucharistic Vigil at Cure of Ars Church, 670 Laclede Station Rd. There is one Mass offered at 8 p.m., confessions are heard, there is a Eucharistic procession, various prayers are said and Eucharistic Adoration. Vigil ends at 11:45 pm. Make time each month to join in the vigil. This way you will respond to Our Lady's request to pray for the conversion of sinners.
