3 Hello, Fourth Sunday of Lent March 11, 2018 Notes From The Pastor's Pen Mass Intentions Monday, March 12 6:30 am Patricia A. Hardy Erin Reilly Logan While most of us are aware that on the third Sunday of Advent we light the rose colored candle and so we may remember that the priest may wear a rose colored vestment at Mass, that also goes for the fourth Sunday of Lent. This Sunday is referred to as Laetare Sunday, laetare being the Latin word for rejoice and the first word of the opening antiphon for Mass, Rejoice Jerusalem.. The main reason for rejoicing is because while we are still in a penitential period of Lent, we are over half way to Easter. Recognizing that we can use a little break and encouragement in this period and also a reminder of what we are preparing and looking forward to. I know some people continue their Lenten practice for all days between Ash Wednesday and Easter, and others choose not to follow it on Sundays, if you were going to just choose one Sunday to excuse yourself this might be an appropriate one. Another connection that has been made to the wearing of the rose colored vestments on this Sunday was the tradition of the Pope carrying a rose in their hand when returning from Mass on this day. The tradition went from him carrying an actual rose, to carrying a rose made of gold, to his blessing a branch of roses made of gold that would then be given to a Catholic king or to a shrine or a church in a particular city to be kept there. A final tradition that is sometimes connected to Laetare Sunday is that it has also been known as Mothering Sunday. I have to admit that I never knew this, but apparently this was connected to a practice of visiting the mother church of the diocese, or the cathedral, on this day. Another way this was celebrated was to go to your mother church, or the church you were baptized in. For many families this could mean a trip back home to where you grew up where you would see other family members. In England the tradition translated into a practice comparable to what we celebrate as Mother s Day on this Sunday. Doing a little Google search I found out this is when the British celebrate Mother s Day. So I guess I better wear the rose vestment this Sunday, and rejoice, we are over half way to Easter. 5 Parish School of Religion Update Our Eighth grade students have completed the Confirmation preparation program and are now turning to the study of early Church History. The Church from the very beginning was based on the magisterial teaching of the apostles. This teaching led the Church in its mission of bringing the message of Christ to the world. Throughout history the Church has had the authority of the magisterium to guide the followers of Christ in the way of faith and morals. Today the successors of the apostles are our Bishops. With the help of the Holy Spirit, they lead us to know the truths of faith. From the very beginning of Christianity the Church has found her identity in being devoted to the teachings of Christ as they have been handed down by the Apostles. Please continue to pray for the students and teachers at PSR. This concert is open and free to the public. As a way to introduce and preview, the choir will do one of the seven movements each week before 11:00 Mass. This week, fourth week of Lent, we will sing The Lord is My Shepherd, a gentle, unassuming arrangement from the beloved Psalm 23. 6 ARCHDIOCESAN LENTEN REGULATIONS The Church has always helped us fulfill these words of Jesus by prescribing very definite penance for all Catholics, so that we too might have Eternal life. Accordingly, the Pope and the American Bishops have outlined obligatory fast and abstinence as follows: Good Friday (March 30, 2018) is a day of abstinence for all Catholics over the age of 14. Fast, as well as abstinence, is also obligatory for those from the ages of Abstinence means refraining from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between meals (liquids are permitted). No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or herself from this obligation. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Here again Catholics will not hold themselves lightly excused, but if there is a serious health problem, this obligation would not apply. We should strive to make all days of Lent a time of prayer and penance. Following are several resources that can aid in finding different forms of prayer and penance. Deacons for Diapers Next weekend, March 16-17, the Permanent Deacons in the Archdiocese of St. Louis will begin a Diaper Drive as part of their Third annual diocesanwide Pro-Life service project. Please bring disposable diapers for infants and toddlers and drop them in the bins at any church entrance. All diapers collected at St. Joseph s will be donated to the fantastic organization, Nurses for Newborns, for distribution. The Deacon s for Diapers Drive will conclude on Easter Sunday. It is being conducted in conjunction with the diocese s Respect Life Office, and coordinated by St. Joseph s St. Vincent De Paul Society. Last year the Deacons collected more than 185,000 diapers to assist St. Louis families in need. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
