3 First Sunday of Lent February 18, 2018 Notes From The Pastor's Pen Hello, Last Saturday Fr. Tom Schaab, our associate pastor, suffered a stroke that resulted in his death on Monday evening. He had suffered from numerous medical concerns in the past, from his heart to his hips and also strokes, but he had continued to serve us and God faithfully especially in his ministry of the sacraments of the Eucharist and Confession. Not only was he usually there for an hour to hear Confessions before the weekday noon Masses, (it is only scheduled for 11:15-11:50, but he was there by 11 and there was usually a line waiting) but if he could he would go back after Mass and it seemed like more and more people were taking advantage of that also. And this was all after he suffered from some of his medical concerns. The following is a list of all the places he has been assigned in his 43+ years serving as a priest: 1974, June 5: Assoc. We were fortunate to have him for his longest stay of over 12 years and while I have been here we were also able to celebrate his 40 th ordination anniversary in I am extremely grateful for the years of ministry he has provided, but also for being able to live with him here for almost five years and witness his ministry and the affects he allowed Christ to work through him. Being the beginning of Lent may be a good opportunity to let his memory inspire us to be open to God s graces in the sacraments, and to say a prayer for Fr. Schaab when you hear his wind chimes off the back porch of the rectory. Peace, Fr. Legal Services for the Needy The St. Louis Archdiocesan Society of St. Vincent de Paul is starting a program to provide legal services to the needy. Volunteer lawyers are needed to help. There is particular need of attorneys who have expertise in family law, child custody, elder law and benefit programs. But, any other specialties would be welcomed. 5 Parish School of Religion Update Today, PSR is Family Day! Moms and Dads will attend a special PSR class with the kids to learn about the Corporal Works of Mercy. Each Work of Mercy will be presented through the real life example of a Saint. Every member of the Body of Christ is called to alleviate the suffering of others and this can be done in small ways each day. Our families will be putting together packs to be handed out to those who are homeless or who they find begging for help. The packs are meant not only to help with material needs, but also to let the person know that we care about them. Each pack will have a card with a scripture passage that the students will color and sign. In passing out the pack the kids will hopefully see the dignity of humanity no matter their social state of life. Please pray for our PSR, we continue to pray for you! The Desert Lent has officially begun. Into the desert we go. The desert is a place we find ourselves in at various points in life, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not. During Lent, we choose to enter the desert of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These practices impel us to rely more on God and to trust in His faithful love. We face many challenges in the desert and sometimes feel as if God is not with us, but entering prayerfully into penance and self-denial just as Christ Himself did, we are able to be transformed and to grow in the ways that are most necessary for our spiritual progress. 6 ARCHDIOCESAN LENTEN REGULATIONS For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. (John 3:16-17) The Church has always helped us fulfill these words of Jesus by prescribing very definite penance for all Catholics, so that we too might have Eternal life. Accordingly, the Pope and the American Bishops have outlined obligatory fast and abstinence as follows: Ash Wednesday (Wednesday February 14, 2018) and Good Friday (March 30, 2018) are days of abstinence for all Catholics over the age of 14. On these two days, fast, as well as abstinence, is also obligatory for those from the ages of Abstinence means refraining from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between meals (liquids are permitted). No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or herself from this obligation. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Here again Catholics will not hold themselves lightly excused, but if there is a serious health problem, this obligation would not apply. We should strive to make all days of Lent a time of prayer and penance. Following are several resources that can aid in finding different forms of prayer and penance. Living the Eucharist Lenten program: Best Lent Ever daily reflections from Dynamic Catholic: USCCB: Each Lent, we are invited into a season of spiritual reflection and renewal. CRS Rice Bowl is one way for families and faith communities to experience the season of Lent. Rice Bowl is the Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services, the international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. CRS Rice Bowl is now in its fifth decade and begins on Ash Wednesday February 14, percent of your Rice Bowl donations support CRS s humanitarian relief programs in nearly 100 countries. Additionally, Catholic Relief Services allows each diocese that participates to keep 25% of the collection in the local community to be used for hunger and poverty alleviation programs. In the Archdiocese of St. Louis, these funds support food pantries and other programs. 7 St Joseph Trivia Night On February 10, despite some freezing rain, our Saint Joseph Family gathered in the Parish Hall for some trivia competition. It was the 17 th Annual Trivia Night and was well attended. An activity like this provides an opportunity for parishioners to spend time together having fun and is a pretty painless way to support the parish inancially. This year seventeen tables of players answered the trivia questions while sharing many kinds of food. The organizers provided sodas, pretzels, and popcorn, but teams also brought pizzas, veggie trays, cheese logs, beer, brownies, ice cream cakes, two-foot-long sandwiches, wine, and lots of chips & crackers. No one left hungry! Some tables were family-based, but most were groups of friends. Choir members made up one of them and Father Nick played with a group of seminarians. Competition was ierce, yet friendly, and players had an opportunity to bid on 25 Silent Auction items between rounds. Thanks to all who donated items, played Saturday, helped with setting up and cleaning up. Next year's event will most likely be on Feb 9
