3 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ May 29, 2016 Hello, This weekend is Memorial Day weekend. A time of year we associate with graduations (from all levels of school), with weddings, and since I ve been a priest also with ordinations (for St. Louis our ordinations to the priesthood were celebrated yesterday) and priest reassignments (they come around the same time as ordinations and I m glad to say that neither Fr. Schaab nor I are involved with these this year). All of these things can cause great changes in your life, ending of one period and the beginning of something new. Possibly involving moving, new jobs, a new way of life. Even if we are not going through one of these this year, just the beginning of the summer season (and I m talking about Memorial Day to Labor Day, not strictly the calendar summer) can be a shift in our daily lives. No matter what kind of change we may be going through, even if it is just seasonal, it is also a good opportunity to look at our lives and consider where our faith is in our lives. One easy thing we can always check is the time we spend on prayer and devotions in our lives. Summer time might be a period when we may be a little more active than other times of the year. Instead of a quiet indoor activity our prayer may be part of a daily walk or other activity, or with the long days we realize that it is easier to get up a few minutes earlier or to sit in a quiet place in a garden or on a deck for quiet reading or reflection. Maybe we need to make a simple connection with every time the Cardinal s win we say a prayer for children that they be able to enjoy the simple things like playing a baseball game. It can be easy to drop certain good practices we have as we change into different parts of our lives, but they are also opportunities to start them. And probably a more important thing to consider is our direction in our lives. As many of the changes we may experience may not only apply to daily routines, but actually affect the direction our life is going, do we take the time to consider if this direction is taking me closer to God or not? It might be a situation where we realize we will have a whole new set of decisions and responsibilities, are we willing to consider the moral aspects of all of these decisions, the challenges they may present. Along with the benefits of most positions, from jobs to relationships, come risks and sacrifices; what are the type of things that may be asked of us and what are we willing to do? Even if we are not going through one of these major changes ourselves this year, it still might be the time to consider some of these questions as we come to an anniversary, or your marriage, of your graduation, of your ordination (not too many of you), of a move. Whatever changes you may be going through or anniversary you are celebrating, hopefully you take it as a chance to reflect on your life, and the great eternal life that God intends for each of us. 5 Women s Silent Retreat at Mercy Center Abide: Keeping Vigil with the Word of God is a silent retreat led by Macrina Wiederkehr, OSB, June 10 11, 2016 at Mercy Center, Frontenac. Registration is Friday at 4:30 P.M. and the program concludes at 3:00 P.M. Saturday. Sister Macrina will encourage you to spend time keeping vigil with the Word of God in all its many forms. Special emphasis will be given to the practice of living mindfully.
