3 Fifth Sunday of Lent March 18, 2018 Notes From The Pastor's Pen Hello, Well this weekend we get the blessing of the feast days of two saints, St. Patrick and St. Joseph. Since I know I have talked about St. Joseph in the past (since not even getting into a hierarchy of saints, he is the patron saint of our parish) so I thought I would mention a bit about St. Patrick today. One difficulty in finding out anything about St. Patrick is that since he is so popular there are many legends that grew about him. Most of what we feel we really know about him come from two of his writings, his Confessions and his Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus. One thing we know is he was not the first evangelist to hit the shores of Ireland. St. Palladius was sent to Ireland by Pope Celestine in 431, but not much is known about him and obviously he wasn t nearly as successful of a missionary as St. Patrick. (How many have even heard of St. Palladius?) But St. Patrick is remembered because he not only converted and baptized so many, but so many of them became monks, or clergy, or nuns, living their faith in a manner that would also encourage the generations of Christians to come after. The first thing we always have to be sure people know about St. Patrick is that he isn t from Ireland, he s from Great Britain and actually likely from a fairly well off family that had an estate and even slaves on that estate. (I have to admit I never read that before, but this is according to Butler s Lives of the Saints, where I corroborated most of this information.) The part many of us know is that he was taken as a slave by a raid of their estate where they took some of their slaves and also Patrick, when he was about 16 years old, and he would live as a slave for the next six years in either the northern Ireland. This would be a blessing and a curse for him later as a missionary as he knew he had missed out of many years of education at this time that may have served him well in spreading the faith later, but he also realized that this period of service and imprisonment served him well in developing his prayer life and a missionary heart. When he escaped from his slavery he had to travel almost 200 miles to find a ship to take him home, (and Ireland isn t that big of an island), and then the ship got lost landing somewhere and searching almost a month to just find food. He would soon begin his studies and be ordained a priest and then a bishop with the intent to return to Ireland as a missionary. It is estimated that it was in the 430 s or 450 s (432 is the very earliest anyone guesses, so after St. Palladius) that he made it back to Ireland and as we know, he was very successful as a missionary in spreading the faith. Actually so successful that some of the British bishops began to question what this lone missionary was doing. Some consider the British bishops were upset with Patrick s Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus. It was written in response to a raid by British in Ireland where they took some of the new Christians to sell as slaves and Patrick essentially excommunicated these soldiers, who were British subjects. So considering what we know about St. Patrick, in addition to having some corned beef or green beer, maybe sharing our faith with others would be a great way to remember and honor him. Peace, Fr. 5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the next two weeks, as we hear of the interior anguish of Jesus, we are led to the Garden of Gethsemane, the scene of a night of suffering, failure, and loss. In Hebrew, the word means olive press, and it was an olive grove, although only a few trees remain. Olives can t be eaten off the trees, they need to be cured knocked from the trees at harvest time, scooped into a stone basin, and cracked open by a heavy millstone. The crushing stone weight was itself called a gethsemane, and once it was lowered onto the olives, oil from the fruit and the inner stone would drip into a groove and flow into jars. The night before his death, Jesus experienced such anguish that scripture says his own blood perspired from him, an image no one who understands olive oil production could miss. Today, the Mount of Olives is within the city of Jerusalem and the site of the Church of All Nations, also known as the Basilica of the Agony. It was built in 1924, funded by Catholics in twelve different countries. An open-air altar on the grounds is used by Anglicans on Holy Thursday every year. Nearby is the Russian Church of Mary Magdalene, built by the czar in 1888, its magnificent golden domes a distinctive landmark. There is also another tiny Catholic Church, called Dominus Flevit, or The Cry of the Lord, built in a teardrop shape in the mid-1950s. For centuries, the Franciscan order has had the care of the shrines of the Holy Land, and our Good Friday collection helps sustain these precious sites. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Deacons for Diapers This weekend, March 17 th & 18 th, the Permanent Deacons in the Archdiocese of St. Louis will begin a Diaper Drive as part of their Third annual diocesan-wide Pro-Life service project. Please bring disposable diapers for infants and toddlers and drop them in the bins at any church entrance. All diapers collected at St. Joseph s will be donated to the fantastic organization, Nurses for Newborns, for distribution. The Deacon s for Diapers Drive will conclude on Easter Sunday. It is being conducted in conjunction with the diocese s Respect Life Office, and coordinated by St. Joseph s St. Vincent De Paul Society. Last year the Deacons collected more than 185,000 diapers to assist St. Louis families in need. Thank you in advance for your generosity. 6 Parish School of Religion Update Over these last few weeks of Lent most of our classes will be participating in an ancient practice of the Church, the Via Dolorosa. Tradition holds as well as the written testimony of St. Jerome that many pilgrims to the Holy Land would trace the Via Dolorosa or Way of the Cross throughout Jerusalem from the second century. In the middle ages the Moslem Turks had blocked access to the Holy Land, but the popularity of the devotion did not diminish. Bishops all over Europe began erecting Stations of the Cross as a way for all Catholics to experience the Way of the Cross. Over time, Popes encouraged the building of the stations in all churches as a way for the faithful to offer themselves up with the sufferings of Christ. The Via Dolorosa can be a beautiful spiritual devotion anytime, but especially during Lent and Holy Week. Stations of the Cross are available to everyone here at St. Joseph on Fridays in Lent at 7pm. This concert is open and free to the public. As a way to introduce and preview, the choir will do one of the seven movements each week before 11:00 Mass. This week fifth week of Lent we will sing Pie Jesu, Domine, "Blessed Jesus, Lord I pray". This is the first of the two soprano solos, asking our Blessed Jesus for the eternal rest of our beloved. 7 Catholic Sisters Exhibit at St. Louis Public Library Celebrate the contributions Catholic Sisters have made to the St. Louis community for the last 200 years and counting by visiting the St. Louis Public Library s upcoming exhibit, Catholic Sisters: The Spirit of St. Louis on display March 3 through April 28 at the Central Library at 1301 Olive Street. The exhibit is open Mondays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The free exhibit, which corresponds with National Catholic Sisters Week from March 8-14, will represent 15 religious communities who have had an impact on education and healthcare, as well highlight the services they have provided those in need.
