2 Hello, Welcome to St. Joseph Clayton, Missouri Memorial Day has come and gone and the warm weather and thunderstorms are starting up, so while it may not be summer yet according to our calendars I think it is in most of our minds. And hopefully also for most of us with summer comes a summer vacation. How we look at our vacations can give us a good way to gain perspective on how we see our faith. When we go on vacation it is from the work in our lives, work being the things we have to do so we can support the things we need in our lives, the necessities, but work also helps us to do the things we just want to do, the luxuries. When we are on vacation we are hopefully doing a thing we want to do, sitting on a beach, biking down a mountain, touring a museum or a park, but also continuing the things we need to do, eating and sleeping. Some vacations may be obviously religious and include going on a retreat, or visiting a shrine, or making a pilgrimage, and those are special times, but on the other vacations do the needs in our life we continue to do include our faith? Do we still see the need to pray, to attend Sunday Mass, to live faithfully? There may be certain places and times that you can t get to a church, but other times it might just take a little effort to locate, or be a little different than we are used to, the language or culture. This can be a challenge, or also a great surprise in some of the variety you may experience. We are willing to try that on vacation with our food, how about our worship? What about praying mealtime prayers, even if you are out in public. Or praying a rosary or just a decade of a rosary during a long family car trip? Seeing a museum, and maybe a cathedral? Or maybe a book you take with you is religious or spiritual or brings up some topics related to your faith that would be good to reflect on in some of this down time. Having a good vacation now and then is important, but just consider what is it I m taking a vacation from? Do I see my faith as just work, or a luxury, or a real need in my life? Peace Fr. Nick Eucharistic Minister Training If you currently are or desire to become an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist we will have training or retraining for these ministries over the next two weekends. Silence Before The Eucharist Out of respect for the Lord, it is important to maintain silence when the Eucharist is exposed. Our prayer before the Blessed Sacrament is a prayer of deep faith and effort needs to made to prevent every kind of distraction. 4 A MISSION FROM THE MOUNTAIN Matthew is the only one of the evangelists who does not speak explicitly of or recount the departure of Jesus from his followers. Mark and Luke recount the Ascension, each in his own way; and John consistently has Jesus speak of the necessity of his departure so the Paraclete might come. Matthew situates his final scene for Jesus on top of a mountain in Galilee (not outside Jerusalem, as Luke does). This is the region where his mission originated, and throughout his Gospel the mountaintop has been the place for him to teach his followers. (We are familiar with the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew.) And here Jesus re echoes those Ascension themes we hear from the other evangelists: It is Jesus himself, risen and glorified, charged with power from the Father, who sends us out; it is Jesus himself who gives us our mission to baptize, heal, teach, and proclaim the Good News of salvation; it is Jesus himself who will be with us always, as we continue to be his presence alive in the world. 5 Young Adult Bible Study (18-40 This is for you!) This summer Our Lady of Lourdes is hosting a DVD/ discussion group for young adults on Tuesday evenings. We'll watch a DVD presentation by the renowned Catholic Bible teacher Jeff Cavins, then discuss how it applies to us. We are meeting on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. in the OLOL Parish Center. Friday, JUNE 6 FATIMA EUCHARISTIC VIGIL When Our Lady appeared at Fatima she requested that we pray the rosary every day, make sacrifices for sinners and offer prayers of Eucharistic Adoration. In this troubled world our response to her request is more urgent now that ever. On the first Friday of each month the World Apostolate of Fatima sponsors a Eucharistic Vigil at Cure of Ars Church, 670 Laclede Station Rd. The Mass is offered at 8 p.m. and again at 12 midnight, confessions are heard, there is a Eucharistic procession and various prayers are said throughout the night. Vigil ends after midnight mass. Make time each month to join in the vigil. This way you will respond to Our Lady's request to pray for the conversion of sinners. Amen Your Summer Smile The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: 'Take only ONE, God is watching.' Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, 'Take all you want. God is watching the apples..' HOSPITALIZED PARISHIONERS Because of the Federal Privacy Act there is no longer a "clergy list" at any of our hospitals. If you are admitted to a hospital, and they ask you if would you like your priest to be notified, please say "yes call my parish priest at St. Joseph at If you know ahead of time you will be admitted, please call your priest at the Rectory and he will readily offer you the Sacrament of the Anointing. If you know of a parishioner who is hospitalized, please do not assume we know; please call the rectory. Our Lady's Inn 11th Annual Tee off to Life Join Our Lady's Inn for their annual golf tournament on Monday, June 23rd. The cost for individual golfers is $200 which includes lunch, golf, a cart, dinner, and a silent auction.
