1 St. Peter Lutheran Church NON-PROFIT ORG. 422 North Pierce Street U.S. POSTAGE PAID Delphos, Ohio PERMIT #6 Phone: (419) DELPHOS, OHIO Website: Pastor Steve Nelson RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED Sunday, September 10 th. 2 The Messenger St. Peter Lutheran Church September 2017 From the Pastor.. The news this past month is filled with stories about how we view and treat our neighbor. The bible has a great deal to say about this, including words from Jesus saying love your neighbor as yourself. This is hard. It is not easy to give our neighbor the benefit of the doubt and let them show us by their words and actions whether or not they even want to be our neighbor. And it is not easy for us to refrain from judgment to give them a chance. Not everyone is a terrorist but the few that are sure get our attention. The following is a prayer from someone out there who used their creativity and imagination to show what their faith might look like as we regard other people whom we come into contact with. It's a good reminder for me see if it fits for you. Heavenly Father, help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with their children. Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can't make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for the next semester. Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job!) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares. Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together. Heavenly father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give to us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not to just those who are close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love. Working for God on earth doesn't pay much-but His retirement plan is out of this world! It is so easy to quickly pass judgment about the people whom we meet or even see near us as we go about our day. Jesus invites us to look but also see them as human beings created in the image of God. First impressions are very often wrong especially if we are putting people into collective groups. It takes effort to see them as the individuals whom they are and even more effort to treat them accordingly. Interim Pastor Steve

3 General Announcements Special offering at St. Peter on Sunday September 10 th The church wide appeal for the Lutheran Church gives us the opportunity to do our part as well. On Sunday September 10 th we will have a free will offering for the work of Global Mission in the Lutheran Church around the world. This is in addition to the noisy offering and our benevolence that we regularly give. We will join with millions of other Lutherans to support the work of our church in this way. If you give by check please make your check out to St. Peter Lutheran Church so that we can write just one check to send into our Synod office. Thank you for considering this. Interim Pastor Steve Radio ministry was given to the glory of God in August by: Martina Himmeger in loving memory of Earl Himmeger Norma Koenig in memory of Ted Koenig Dave and Linda Mayer Family Matt and Carrie Calvelage Family in celebration of Troy s birthday The flowers on the altar were given to the glory of God in August by: Dan and Judy Staples in celebration of their 35 th wedding anniversary Readers Needed for the first and second scripture lessons and the prayers during the worship service. 4 Pork Loin Dinner It is that time of year again for our annual Pork Loin Dinner which will be held on Sunday, October 1. With the tickets now being dispersed, please see Yvonne Koenig or Ryan Trentman for your packet of tickets or questions. Last year our Pork Loin Dinner was a huge success with $4, being made to deposit into the General Fund for current expenses. Thank you for your support. Reminder: Worship Service will be at 9AM on October 1st. Address Update Be sure and let the office know if you have an address, or phone update. Newsletters can be mailed to your college student, if we have their address Quarterless Auction. We are always planning ahead. The annual Quarterless Auction is always held on the first Saturday of March, which this coming year is March 3! The church council gives us $500 working capital to get things bought ahead. Below is our list of items that we have purchased to date. As we have done in the past, you may designate the items you would like to pay for as your generous donation. When many people do this ahead, that money is re-invested back into more auction items. Right now Summer items are on clearance and it is a great time for us to find good deals. We have nearly spent our $500 allowance; so, if you want to help us right now...designate some items as your donation! All the Quarterless Auctions have brought in great money and this money goes right back into the general fund. Let s continue our great tradition and keep this auction flowing upwards. Thanks for all your help! 8 Maintenance Committee The steeple project is still moving forward, although we are on a waiting list. The contractor (Nathan Lee) has several very large projects he is working on, and like many other projects, had more come up that needed done plus the fact that early spring rains and constant winds hampered his ability to work on them, plus finding laborers is also a huge problem, so he is behind schedule. He anticipates late August, early September to get started. We have covered what we will be doing, and due to the fact that money is still coming in, we will be able to do more than initially planned. Other projects that have been done: we had the windows on the south side of the building top and bottom and kitchen covered with window film (tinted). The material that was applied cuts the heat entering by sunlight by 90%, making it much cooler in the building. We then came back and had the entrance windows tinted to cut heat by sunlight to make it cooler. A bonus is in the winter, heat that would be lost by transfer about 55% will now be reflected back into the building, an addition fuel saving. The company estimates 3 to 4 year payback on energy savings to cost of project. WELCA donated some funds towards this project, with the building maintenance paying the rest. The parsonage renovation of the basement is complete, with some exterior work and painting yet to be completed. Also, new driveway to replace the deteriorated blacktop will soon be done. One third (1/3) of the cost will be shared by the adjacent property owner. In the bell tower, we are working on a remote control for the fan system to replace the system that we use now that is high risk to the persons doing it to change over from summer to winter mode and then back. The oak doors on the front entrance need redone, and we are getting a plan together as to doing this. The doors will have to be removed and the entrance closed. We are also taking a look at the door frames as they need work also. We got 17 years (2000 last done) out of the system that was used before and we will be reusing the same method this time. The handicap railing is in need of repair as the pipes are broken at the base and will require removal to be repaired. This will be done before fall. There is always need for help on this committee, if you feel you can contribute some funds or some time, we are always looking for help. If notice something that needs attention, feel free to contact us. Thank you, Dan Kramer or Randy Rinehart or Eric Fritz.
