2 Dear friends, As I move into your parsonage, and our new home, I come filled with excitement, curiosity, great expectation, and a little anxiety. I suspect you might be able to identify with some of those emotions, particularly anxiety. I hope you're excited and curious about us and have great expectations for our time together but it would be unnatural to approach a pastoral change without some anxiety. On the one hand there is "the known" Pastor Dennis and his family have been part of your community for some time. I know you love and respect him and together you have done some wonderful things. On the other hand, I am the new kid on the block. It is a little like bringing a new puppy home from the Humane Society and wondering if It's paper trained. You wonder, who is this guy and what's important to him? First, as I get to know my way around the First United Methodist Church of Carroll (which of course is you, not the building). I want to know who you are as individuals and families, as spiritual people, and as a church. I will be taking a "teach me" posture as I meet you and get to know you. You can help me by making sure that you connect with me either in a small group or individually and teach me what is important to you. Second, I am passionately committed to making disciples for Jesus Christ. That doesn't start with evangelism. It starts with making sure that we are each active and growing disciples of Jesus Christ: our members, our constituents, our children, our youth, our families, and our elderly. Will you join me this month in praying that individually and corporately we will bear the fruit of the spirit? (I have included a prayer schedule below). CONTACTING THE NEW PASTOR. Over Half of a pastor s job is finding ways to communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ and God s love. Communication, however, is no fun by yourself! Never be afraid to call, text, or me. EMERGENCY CALLS I do take regular days off that will be printed on the church calendar, however, I respond to emergency needs seven days a week 24 hours a day depending on the urgency. Please call or text my cell phone If you aren t sure it is urgent, call anyway. I can determine if it is urgent. ROUTINE BUSINESS questions are often best handled by or leaving a message with the church office. I will try to wait to respond during regular office hours. ANYTHING ELSE? 3 In John Jesus said, I am the vine you are the branches. Each branch is connected to Jesus and in turn to all the other branches. If we aren t connected, we can t bear fruit. Pretty simple. All We have to do is hang out with each other, and together hang on to Jesus, and we will bear Kingdom fruit. Come join me in worship 6 pm Saturday night or 10 am Sunday morning. Terry colored comics for a newspaper. b. Terry worked in a cold storage plant packaging frozen lima beans. c. Terry worked in the kitchen at Westmar College. ANSWER: C is the lie. Robyn is actually the one who worked in the kitchen at Westmar while we were students there. In 1995 I worked for Manpower on a number of temp assignments. Two of those were the Quad City Times (where I added color to the daily comics with a program like MS Paint before they went to press) and in a frozen food processing plant. I also delivered advertising proofs, typed legal notices, and managed an advertising account at the QC Times. In addition I worked at Sears, a warehouse, and John Deere chaining tractors to railroad cars. Come meet me and we ll play two truths and a lie about your life too!! FIRST UMC CARROLL SENDS MISSIONARIES TO DO GOD S WORK! We are so proud to be sending 5 young missionaries to Loveland, Colorado this month. Hannah & Hailey Bush, Madeline Parrott, Claudia Schroeder, Maddie Hacker, Sue Van Dyke, and Jason Bush will be leaving on July 22 and returning July 27. While they are gone they will (?). Answer to this and more when they return. Watch for an announcement about consecrating these youth before they leave on their mission trip, Also watch for an opportunity to hear about the trip.

4 SERMON TOPICS July 1- LOVE is more than words on a mushy greeting card. Love is at the very heart of God's essence. Let the church be a community of radical love. July 8- JOY. In a world that seems to dwell on bad news, Christians drink from the well of God s Joy. Let the church be a community that joyfully worships God. July 15-PEACE. By the Holy Spirit, faith brings peace to troubled souls. As a child blows dandelion seeds across the yard, the church spreads the peace (and justice) of Christ across our city and the world. Let the church be a community crying for peace and justice in the world. July 22- PATIENCE- In a world where most people live lives characterized by microwave ovens and text messages, God's kingdom is more like the Grand Canyon, beautifully carved over centuries. The church should be a place in which time is not our enemy, but a gift of God. Let the church be a community that lives in patient hopeful expectation of the kingdom of God. July 29- KINDNESS- Instead of blaming someone, Christians are here to make a difference... kindness won't kill the giver or the receiver. Let the church be a community sharing God's kindness by outreach and mission. July 22 nd 27 th : Youth Group Mission Trip to Loveland, CO. Hannah & Hailey Bush, Madeline Parrott, Claudia Schroeder and Maddie Hacker will be participating in the mission trip. Sue Van Dyke and Jason Bush will be chaperoning. Please keep all of them in your prayers as they travel and work and minister to those God brings across their paths each day. When the group returns they will give a brief recap of the week. Food Pantry Update During the month of June we contributed $156 work of items to the food pantry. This month they are asking for donations of easy to make, kid friendly foods. Nancy and I are so grateful for the outpouring of love, wonderful words of encouragement, and the many gifts from our church family that were given to us in our leaving the ministry at Carroll, First. Thank you all for being our strength in this time of our lives. We will miss everyone so much bit God will be our refuge through this time. May God be with you all in the future. 7 GAME ON FOR JULY & AUGUST Mission commission is again having a contest in order to gather school supplies for Ingathering, National League vs. American League. 50 items (6 pencils=1 item) or $50, equals a RUN. Please put money in an envelope and mark school supplies & your team or toss in your supplies in the baskets at back of Sanctuary. SCORE FOR YOUR TEAM!!
