CALVARY Brooke Barr - Grade 2 Jan Heien - Title I Reading Tutor Michele Keehner - 2 nd Grade Teacher s Aide Becky Garvey - Administrative Assistant SCRIPTURE LESSONS FOR NEXT SUNDAY: August 26 th 14 th Sunday after Pentecost Psalm 14 Isaiah 29:11-19 Ephesians 5:22-33 Mark 7:1-13 THIS WEEK S FLOWERS were given to the glory of God by Nancy Meyer in thanksgiving for God s many blessings. WEEKLY STEWARDSHIP UPDATE Our offering for the General Fund for August 12, 2018, was $3, Our weekly need for 2018 is $7, We started this fiscal year with a clean slate in terms of expenses vs. income. But we d still like to make up some of the ground we lost last year so please continue to give as generously as your means allow. NEW SUNDAY MORNING ADULT BIBLE STUDY HAS BEGUN -- A Man Named Martin -- Part 3: The Movement: As we take up the final video from Lutheran Hour Ministries (produced to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Luther nailing the 95 Theses to the church doors in Wittenberg), we will focus on the effects of the Lutheran Reformation -- what consequences it had and how it continues to grow today. The study has five sessions (or more, depending on how chatty we get). Meets in the Parish Hall at 9:30 am. 1

2 NEW MEN S BIBLE STUDY: 1 st Samuel: The men are jumping from Genesis to 1 st Samuel in order to consider God s work in establishing the kingdom. YHWH is faithful to His promises despite the weakness of the people, and provides for them by raising up Samuel, Saul, and finally David. Join us Wednesdays at 6:30 am. We meet at the Bob Evans on Allen Rd. near the Walmart. NEW THURSDAY AFTERNOON BIBLE STUDY: Deuteronomy: Join us as we finish reading the Five Books of Moses with the study of Deuteronomy. This is Moses farewell address to Israel as they prepare to cross into the Promised Land. But, more than that, this is a renewal of God s Covenant with a new generation, and an explanation of how the Law applies to their new lives. Even though the book contains a lot of political and ceremonial law that doesn t apply to us the moral law still holds us. And the same God still calls us to live out love for Him and our neighbor in tangible ways. So, come learn with us. We meet Thursdays at 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall. NEW WEDNESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY BEGAN AUGUST 1 st 1 ST Peter -- How does one faithfully endure trouble and even mistreatment that comes because of faith? By clinging to Jesus! Join us as we read through the first letter of Peter and are strengthened in faith as we consider Jesus work for us. Meets Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm. The class is discussion format rather than lecture. SUNDAY SCHOOL PROMOTION Today we will have a special blessing of our Sunday School Staff and Students. The children will be promoted to the next grade (and classroom as applicable) today and the teachers will be using the new fall material. Please plan to have your children in Sunday School and church that day. Calvary 1 st Meeting of Fall The first meeting of the fall season will be on Monday evening, September 10 th (to avoid the Labor Day weekend). We meet at 6:30 pm in the Parish Hall. Every woman is a member Join us for fun, food, and fellowship. LWML Fall Zone Rally The Fall Zone Rally of the LWML will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, 325 E. Queenwood Rd. in Morton on Wednesday, September 26 th. Registration begins at 8:15 am, with the Rally beginning at 9:00 am. Their theme this year is Ephesians 2:10. As soon as registration forms become available they can be picked up in the office. (See notice about the need for a vice-president below.) Treats for Family House Family House offers a home away from home for the families of patients receiving medical treatment in Peoria. Women of Mt. Calvary have signed up to sponsor treats on the 4 th Monday of each month. These treats may be store bought or homemade, and do not have to be individually wrapped. Family House is also in need of laundry detergent and cleaning supplies. If you would like to donate, please sign the sheet on the bulletin board across from Pastor s office and bring your treats to church, leaving them in the kitchen marked Family House. Questions? Call LaVelle Borders, Postage Stamps The Women of Mt. Calvary are saving postage stamps for LWML. Please cut out your postage stamps from envelopes and place them in the striped box on the table in the parish hall. We will trim the stamps and send them to LWML to support their mission work. Thank you.

3 LWML PEORIA-PEKIN ZONE: -- Needs a vicepresident! Ideally, this woman would be nominated before the September 26 th Zone Rally. Any woman who is a member in good standing of an LCMS congregation in our local circuits may serve. Generally there are only 2-3 meetings per year, here at Mt. Calvary (Pastor Long is the Zone Counselor). Duties are light: assist the president in carrying out the LWML program, step in for the president if she is unable to act, and look after other duties as needed and assigned. Interested? Talk to Pastor Long. FOOD & DRINK We understand that some folks and families need to bring beverages and food into the sanctuary to help keep everyone content and healthy during services. We would simply ask that you make sure crumbs, spills, and scraps are picked up before you go. Thanks! LOCK YOUR CARS! Please remember to lock your cars at all times when on our parking lot and do not leave anything of value in them. And, especially in the evenings, be aware of your surroundings. More lighting had been installed, and the security cameras have been put up. They are on a motion sensor and will record anyone or anything that crosses in front of them. New signs warning that the cameras are there are now posted. HELP! PEOPLE TO STAFF NURSERY NEEDED! Women of Mt. Calvary would like to have at least two people in the nursery during the 10:45 am worship service every Sunday. Please consider helping with staffing the nursery and then sign the sheet indicating when you are available to serve. Sign-Up sheets are on the bulletin board through September FROM CONCORDIA Concordia Golf Classic -- It s time for another day of fun, fellowship and fairways!!! Concordia Lutheran School is proud to announce that the Concordia Golf Classic 2018 will be held Monday, October 8th at the Country Club of Peoria. Registration forms and more information will be available soon. If you have any questions, please contact Christopher Craine at or christopher.craine@yahoo.com. We can t wait to see you there!!! Registration forms are now available in the church office. LUTHERANS FOR LIFE THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Even out of Jesus mouth the Gospel causes offense (John 6:61, 66). Yet to whom else shall we go? Shall we take refuge in the empty, ever-changing trends of politically correct popular opinion? Only the Savior 3 speaks life abundant life, eternal life, life for free, life for all (6:63). If our words do not declare and deliver life, they do not come from the Lord. O Wisdom from on high, let Your goodness fill our hearts and mouths. Amen. Peoria Area Lutherans for Life usually meets every 4th Monday of the month at 6:30 pm except during the summer. We welcome anyone who would like to attend and learn more about life issues. Please call Deb Lakamp at 309/ or her at lakamps@gmail.com if you have any questions. Our next meeting will be next Monday, August 27 th, 2018, at 6:30 pm. Our new meeting place is Bethel Lutheran Church, 325 E. Queenwood Rd., Morton. ISSUES ETC. For the next few weeks in Sunday School, the children will be studying true story of the life of Joseph. It begins today with the account of Joseph and His Brothers.
