3 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 11, 2012 PAGE 3 A Message from the Pastor Hey now, I sit here writing this note late on Election Day. Like so many other people, I am listening as the news broadcasts the latest results from many contests throughout the United States. While there is a sense of anticipation to hear the final numbers come through, there is even more a sense of relief coming over me at this time. The relief comes from the fact that the long campaign season (too long in my view) has come to an end. Gone for another few years are the robo-calls that have bothered people at inconvenient hours for the past number of months. I am not sure what will take its place, but also placed into the annals of history are the smear ads that ran on television and radio. As you know these advertisements were at times vicious and erroneous. It did serve a purpose though in that it made people afraid. They were afraid of yesterday and even more fearful of the tomorrows. Coupled with fear were words filled with division and hatred. How sad it was to watch the debates and when someone had the upper hand, they didn t merely relish the win; rather, they went in for the kill so to speak. Such actions on the part of a candidate or the public doesn t show forth the advanced, cognizant and rationale capability of a human being. Instead such actions or reactions to what was said or done glaringly showed that even though we are humans we are still members of the animal kingdom. Now that the election is over and a winner has been declared what are we going to do? We may say that our candidate won and we can be filled with pride. However, we must be careful for too much pride in ourselves leaves little, if any, room for Christ to still reign in our hearts. We may bitterly say that our candidate lost and our thoughts and actions may turn to how we can best work to halt anything positive from moving forward in the government. Or we can try to work together following a dictate made popular by Patrick Henry who stated, United We Stand, Divided We Fall. However, such wisdom goes back a little further to a prophetic voice from someone who we believe is more than a prophet. It goes back to Jesus the Christ, the Word made flesh, and it is similar. A house divided against itself cannot stand. (Mark 3:25) Let me share with you some words that came to me on election day that are filled with not only wisdom, but guidance as well. May this day be one of unity, that whomever is elected, that we can come together in our common oneness. May we experience a sense of common purpose. May we be diligent in our discernment, looking forward seven generations in our considerations. May we recognize and feel gratitude that we live in a society that tries to honor the right to select our leadership. May we also know that our choices affect the entire planet and the web of life. And may we come to understand that ultimately, we are one. There is no us vs. them and we are moving toward that realization in ways that are wonderful and challenging. These are words that even though I didn t create them, I can only pray that I put them to life in the coming days and years. We always turn to God for our prayers and may the needs we raise up to God not ask God to be on our side, but may we try to live as if we are on God s side. May God bless us all today and in whatever tomorrows may await us. In Christ s Peace, Fr. Gary

For more information or to volunteer please call the parish office at SJB KINDERGARTEN SPOTLIGHT It is not too early to start thinking about the school year and which school would be the best fit for your child. 6 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 11, 2012 PAGE 6 SV dp ST. VINCENT DE PAUL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Thank you for all of your generous donations. We hope that you will return your bag with items for those in need. Besides the traditional Thanksgiving meal necessities the following are items we need for our pantry: Paper Towels Deodorant Toilet Paper Tooth Brushes Kleenex Shampoo Conditioner Laundry Detergent ADOPT-A-FAMILY Although it is not as evident here as in some other areas, within the boundaries of the Parish of St. Benedict we have families who are struggling to provide for their children. Many parents are worried that they might not be able to provide Christmas gifts and Christmas dinner to their families because all their income is earmarked for living essentials. As a result, St. Benedict's Conference of St. Vincent de Paul is once again undertaking the Christmas Adopt-a-Family Program (AaF) to help the working poor within our parish boundaries. Sponsoring a family through SVdP's Adopta-Family Program is a wonderful way to keep the true spirit of Christmas. It is a great project for families, office groups, organizations, clubs, and schools. Once you submit this form, St. Benedict's Adopt-a-Family coordinator will contact you with information regarding the family you are sponsoring and will be available if you have any questions or problems. To sign up to adopt-a-family please visit the Ministries page of our website and click on St. Vincent de Paul, the link is under Quick Links. Knights Meetings The next meeting will be Thursday, December 13 at 7:30 pm. We gather in room 2 of the church. Please plan to attend! The Knights of Columbus is a men s fraternal organization dedicated to God, Family, Parish and Community. If you are interested in finding out more about the Knights of Columbus, contact Jay Iole at jayiole@iolenet.com. Degree Initiation There will be a 2nd and 3rd Degree initiation on November 17 at Corpus Christi Parish. All 1st Degree members who desire to reach full Knighthood should plan on arriving at 9 am, the ceremony begins at 10 am. ANGEL GIVING TREE We have started working on the Angel Giving Tree program for this Christmas season. We have plenty of volunteer opportunities available for all ages. If you are interested in helping out with this program, please Joyce Petrowski at petrowski4@cox.net. S SCRIP UPDATE FROM SR. MARGE To all of you who have been recharging, you are doing great! 7 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 11, 2012 PAGE 7 FINANCIAL DISCIPLESHIP: THE RIGHT AMOUNT The account in today s Gospel should prompt us to take another look at the role of money in our lives as people of faith. Jesus and his disciples are in the temple. Jesus comments on the people putting cash offerings into the temple treasury, noting the well-dressed religious leaders who are offering large sums. These are the ones who parade around saying prayers out loud and accepting places of honor at banquets and in synagogues. They devour the houses of widows, says Jesus to his disciples, and will receive a very severe condemnation. At this point they see a poor widow approach, whose offering is equal to about two cents. Jesus praises her because she is giving all she has to live on, while the wealthy are giving only what they feel like sparing. But consider this story in another light. What if everyone could see exactly what you put in the parish offertory basket each and every week. How would you feel? Anxious, embarrassed, or even angry? Would you look at other people differently if you saw their contributions? Would you change your contribution? Would you give something every time instead of skipping some weeks? Or would your heart be at peace, knowing that your gift is a responsible decision reflecting your gratitude for all God s blessings? Jesus does not ask us to give so much that we cannot support ourselves: he condemns the temple scribes for letting the widow do that. Here is where the word proportion comes in. If, as followers of Jesus Christ, you see clearly that God is the giver of all, how do you offer thanks? What portion of these blessings do you give back to honor God and to build up the Church? Truly, everyone can give something; but the amount is between you and God. Copyright 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. ST.
