4 Corpus Christi Catholic Church The Arcieri Family Catholic Journey, by Art Arcieri About a year and a half ago I was having a conversation with my brother-in-law, who had left the Catholic Church more than thirty years ago, about our family s involvement at our parish. I told of our boys serving at the altar and my wife and I being ushers and Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Eucharist. It was at this point that he asked, Do you really believe in transubstantiation? I paused, shook my head, and sighed, I don t know. But what I do know is that when I hold up the Host and announce The Body of Christ I can see the look of faith in the eyes of those who do believe, and it is POWERFUL! I then said, almost under my breath, I wish that I had that Faith. Little did I know that this would be one of those prayers that God actually does answer. Over the next couple of months my wife, my kids, and I began to feel a heavy feeling of discontent with the church. We couldn t put our finger on why, so we blamed our pastor, our bishop, the Pope and the people that we served with. We were certain that it couldn t have been us. After about a month of these dark feelings, we all decided that we needed a break from the Catholic Church, so we started attending a Lutheran church. At first we felt right at home. The service was very similar to a Mass, the pastor gave great sermons, the communion bread looked and tasted the same and so did the wine. After a couple of months of getting to know us, the pastor asked my teenage boys to usher and my wife and I to serve as communion assistants. That was when my wife and I began to witness a disturbing trend. When we held up the bread and declared, The Body of Christ there was no look of wonder and amazement, no amen, no crossing of oneself or pause to reflect. The congregants would grab the wafer out of our hand, say thank you, and rush back to their seat. I began to realize that, though we were praying together as a family and reading scripture together after dinner most every night, something was missing. Some time after, a friend of the family had been called home to be with the Lord. We attended the funeral Mass, and when it came time to receive communion, though I knew that I shouldn t because I had left the Church, I found myself being lifted 4 from my knees and walking up to receive. My family followed. Upon receiving communion an amazing feeling of peace and love came over me. It was as if Life was breathed into my heart. On our ride home my wife and kids all recounted the same feeling. Several weeks later we took our kids back to our home town of Rochester N.Y. to show them The Old Country. While there I took them to Mass at the old Saint Michael s Cathedral. It is a huge old gothic church built in the 1870s. The Mass that we attended was in Spanish, and though we speak very little Spanish it didn t matter; it was The Mass. We knew when to stand, we knew when to kneel. As we read the prayers in Spanish from the missal we knew exactly what we were reciting, and when it came time for communion, once again the Spirit came upon us. After Mass I engaged in conversation with a few of the parishioners outside of the church. I told them of the journey that we had been on over the past year. One of the men pointed to the church

5 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 26, 2017 Have you been away from the Catholic Church? Like the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son, Jesus rejoices in your return! Come embrace Him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation! building and said to me Look at these stones, all cut by hand and carried up scaffolding by hand to build this church. Consider the beautiful artwork within; statues carved by hand and beautiful paintings on the walls and ceiling. These are not gifts to the people from the church. These are gifts to the church from the people. He continued, You do not see such things in the protestant churches. The reason is this; when we take the Eucharist, Jesus becomes a part of us. His great love that caused Him to sacrifice all for us makes us want to sacrifice all for Him. All the buildings and riches of the Catholic Church represent the sacrifices of the faithful throughout the centuries. These sacrifices insure that the gates of Hell will not prevail against Christ s Church on Earth. Two days later we were in Manhattan where we visited Saint Patrick s Cathedral. As we made our way up to the Altar we came to the area of Adoration. Upon confronting the Holy Eucharist we all fell to our knees. I said out loud what we all felt in our spirits. It s time to go Home. Now if asked if I really believe in transubstantiation, without hesitation I would answer that I don t just believe that it is real I KNOW that it is real! 5 What s Your Story? As Catholics, we have a tendency to refrain from sharing about our personal relationship with God. However, this is something we feel needs to change! We believe sharing our faith with others and being witnesses to how God has worked in our lives, can only help to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ! In order to help facilitate this sharing, our bulletin will often feature conversion stories and personal testimonies about how God has impacted our lives. We may also feature these stories on our parish website or through our newsletter. The only way this can work is if YOU help by writing and providing to us your conversion stories! to christi.deg@corpuschristiphx.org and please keep it between 1,300-2,000 words in length. Also, if you have any pictures to go along with the story (either images of you, your family, or of things related to your story) please include those as well. Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe Tired of your Christmas decorations and looking to change the theme? Perhaps you would just like to add to your current Christmas décor? Well, look no further. SGC is hosting the third annual Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe. We are looking for donations of gently used Christmas décor: ornaments, tress, tinsel lights, Christmas cards, paper, etc. You name it, if it s still in good condition, we ll take it. You can drop off your donations on Sat. Dec. 9 th from 8 am until 2 pm in the Parish Center. Then after the weekend Masses we will hold the free will event in the Parish Center. There, you will be able to view what we have collected. Items will not be priced, but a free will donation will be accepted to help those in need. You decide how much to donate for your new gently used items. Proceeds from the event will benefit our St. Vincent de Paul Conference here at Corpus Christi. Need a special arrangement pick-up? Significant co-sponsors include the In-Country Vietnam Veterans and Zia s Records. Additional funds come from voluntary donations of parishioners and Ahwatukee Foothills citizens. Donations are welcome at Knights of Columbus Council 10062, Knights Kids Project, 3550 E. Knox Road, Phoenix, AZ With the combination of discounts from the local JCPenney Store, plus the generous donations by co-sponsors and the general public, each child receives a substantial addition to their otherwise meager wardrobe. P B D 10 th P B O P S Your Corpus Christi Knights of Columbus will host our Winter Pancake Sunday on December 10 th following all morning Masses. Scrambled eggs, pancakes, pork sausage patties, fruit toppings, pastries, hot and cold beverages will abound as we enjoy the best breakfast deal in Ahwatukee. At $5.00 for adults and less for those under twelve years of age, some folks say the deal is so great we should have it every Sunday. While it isn t practical, we do appreciate the grand compliment, so bring the whole family, belly up, and enjoy an excellent Sunday breakfast and the camaraderie of your smiling parishioners! Several years ago, your Corpus Christi Knights of Columbus approved a policy of providing $ per month to each seminarian who is a member of Corpus Christi parish. The Pancake Breakfasts, hosted several times a year, provide some of the funds for this worthwhile endeavor. We appreciate your patronage and support! Thank you! The next Family Holy Hour is Friday, December 15 th from 4:00-5:00 pm. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will also be available during this time. All Catholics living in the Parish area and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs. Adults 18and over need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get married, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors. In order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or to receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program. Registration forms can be filled out in the Parish Office or via our parish website. How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. A preparation class is also required for parents prior to the child s Baptism and are offered once a month. How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as Last Rites, waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive. How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.
