3 November 2017 The Cent-I-Gram 3 Saved by God s grace through faith alone Well, the first 500 years of the Reformation are now officially behind us. During this year of celebration we ve had several opportunities to come together as a community -- to remember and to reflect. My hope is that we ve all found something that stirred our imagination whether it was the Red Doors that have been in the lobby for most of the year (thanks to Larry Shumaker), the showing in February of the movie Luther, the singing of Luther hymns in worship, or our festive celebration on Reformation Sunday (thanks to Patt Shumaker and all who helped with the meal). I trust that there has been something for everyone. But more than anything, I hope we have come away with an understanding that reformation in the Church is not so much a moment in time to be celebrated and forgotten. It is rather a story that continues into the future God s future a story that includes us! Our Action Phrase for 2017 has been Reforming, Renewing, and Growing in Faith. This understanding is beautifully expressed in the hymn, The Church of Christ in Every Age The church of Christ in every age beset by change, but Spirit led, must claim and test its heritage and keep on rising from the dead. Our Holy Bible offers us many stories of faith, stories about God breaking into people s lives, and making God s presence known. Sometimes, we form images of the people of scripture as being larger than life. You know what I mean: Noah and his ark, Moses parting the Red Sea, Abraham and Sara founding all the families on earth. But as our confirmation students could tell you, the bible is a collection of stories that are often about very ordinary people imperfect people that God uses to advance God s promise. So where is God s future leading us -- the people of Centennial? What ministry are we being called to do in this place and time? A Vision Team has been formed to help us discern a way forward. Vision Team members are Barbara Ray, Valerie Griffiths, Judi Silvia, Dave Winning and John Miller. In my time as your pastor, I ve come to know you, the people of Centennial as an extraordinary group. You understand that we can do more as a community in the name of Christ than we could ever do as individuals. We need your help! As we end 2017 and begin a new year, you will hear more about our vision for the future. You will be asked to share your ideas with Vision Team members and with one another. Our vision statement will be meaningful only if it is a mutual effort! In the meantime, there are a number of events and worship opportunities available to everyone as we close out This year, during the Advent season, we ll be having Wednesday evening Soup Suppers followed by Holden Evening prayer. We hope you will join us for these evenings of fellowship, sharing a meal and worshiping together as we await the birth of the Christ child. The first of our Advent Soup Suppers will be later this month, on November 29 at 6:00 PM. Look for more information, and please be sure to mark your calendars! Looking forward to a wonderful Thanksgiving and Advent season in the name of Christ, Pastor Jerry

13 November 2017 The Cent-I-Gram 13 Lutheran Indian Ministries Trans World Radio Lutheran Indian Ministries This ministry shares the gospel with Native American nations from Alaska, Hawaii, Manitoba Canada, and the West. The ministry envisions a time when all nations walk together in Christian fellowship. Centennial became associated with their mission through our interest in supporting Native Americans. Each year, we receive devotional booklets for Lent and Advent. Look forward for the coming Advent booklets and learn about their work and experiences. Trans World Radio Trans World Radio is an International Christian missions media ministry. It uses radio programming, via short wave, and over 200 languages to reach the world. Its purpose is to fulfill the command of Jesus Christ to make disciples of people using mass media. Part of their mission statement is to use mass media to...proclaim the gospel of salvation to as many people as possible, instruct believers in Biblical doctrine and daily Christ-like living Trans World Radio began in 1954 in Tangier, Morocco with an army-surplus transmitter. In 1993, Centennial became involved when Jim McIntyre and his wife, Doris, visited Centennial and requested our support for their mission. Jim and Doris grew up in our area. In Guam, Jim has been responsible for building and maintaining the facility and, before her untimely death, Doris conducted Bible studies and programs which were broadcast over the Asian area.

On Veterans Day, we honor men and women who ve served and sacrificed in one of America s armed services. On November 11, 1918, America and her allies signed a truce with German leaders, ending World War I. In 1919, President Wilson decided the United States should remember with gratitude the end of that war and honor military members by marking Armistice Day, or truce day. In 1954, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day, honoring veterans of every era. Veterans Day highlights our country s quest for peace, justice and freedom throughout the world. Followers of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, pray for unity among all nations and for the day when nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore (Isaiah 2:4, NIV).
