1 THIS WEEK AT FPC WORSHIP SCHEDULE December 2, 2018 Scripture Lesson: Jeremiah 33: :15 a.m. Sunday School 10:30 a.m. Worship Service Sunday Worship NEWS Sermon Title: The Days Are Coming Rev. William P. Proctor, Pastor During the 10:30 a.m. Worship Service the congregation will sing the following hymn: Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus. In addition and as a great start to Advent the Chancel Choir be presenting their Christmas Cantata A Classic Christmas featuring familiar carols in new settings, favorite classical anthems and a musical treasure from the vintage Christmas movie, The Bishop s Wife. O Come, O Come Emmanuel Our weekly response during Advent, in place of the Gloria Patri, will be the beautiful Advent hymn, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. In Hebrew, the word immanu means with us. The word El means God. Emmanuel, then, combines those two words immanu and El to mean God with us.
2 Long before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah said: Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel. (Matthew 1:20-23 see Isaiah 7:14) Emmanuel God with us one of the many names that the Bible gives to the Messiah to Jesus. The hymn, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, highlights that name of Jesus and invites him to come and ransom captive Israel. Israel knew what it meant to be enslaved, and they wanted God to redeem them. We have not been in slavery, but we do know what it means to feel trapped to be caught between a rock and a hard place to need help and to need it desperately. When we find ourselves in that situation, we need to pray the prayer of this hymn, O Come, O come Emmanuel and ransom us save us redeem us make us whole. Christ has saved us. Christ is saving us now. Christ will be our salvation throughout eternity. He has already answered our prayer and is answering our prayer and will answer us when we pray, O Come, O come Emmanuel and ransom us save us redeem us make us whole. Their programs are designed to serve the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical needs of our community by providing temporary assistance with food, clothing, household items and furniture. Right now they are in need of coats of all sizes especially children, but the
5 adults need them too, men's pants and jeans. They will have people asking for adult bicycles. They also have requests for full and queen size beds. If you passed through the Commons you might have seen our recently built Little Free Pantry. The Little Free Pantry Program provides access to non-perishable items to those in need within our community. Our fellow downtown church, First United Methodist Church, has one that sits in front of their courtyard and they keep it stocked Monday through Friday. We are going to start out trying to keep ours stocked Saturday and Sunday, if we can generate enough interest in the project. There is additional information on the table in the Commons for you to read. Also, there is a sign-up sheet if you are interested in helping with our Little Free Pantry program. YOUTH FELLOWSHIP meets Sundays at 5:30 p.m., in the Youth Center. The youth will eat supper and then have Bible study. They will be using the study Shaken: Discovering Your True Identity in the Midst of Life s Storms by Tim Tebow.
