Michael Wagner INTRODUCING OUR NEW SEMINARIAN CHAD HILL Hello, My name is Chad Hill and I will be the seminarian working here at the parish for the summer. Just to give you a little information about myself, I am the middle child of three boys, and both of my siblings are married and have children. I have three nieces and two nephews whom I love greatly. I grew up in Puyallup attending All Saints Parish and graduated from Rogers High School. Before becoming a seminarian, I worked many manual labor jobs such as: working at a door company, cabinet shop, and the City of Puyallup Street Department. Then for six years I worked as a youth minister at Our Lady Queen of Heaven parish in Spanaway. Some of my hobbies include playing board games, reading books, and hanging out with my friends. Last summer I graduated from college seminary with a Bachelors in Philosophy with a double major in Religious Studies. I just finished my first year of Theology at Mount Angel Seminary. One interesting fact about my family is that my parents got married while they worked at the circus and I have a cousin who currently trains lions. PAGE 3

Their father Samuel had always served God faithfully, but the sons were very different. They used their position to take money that did not belong to them. The people complained about these sons. They said they wanted a king to rule over them, like the other nations had. Samuel had a long conversation with God about this request. God told him that the people were actually rejecting God. They had forgotten all God s love and powerful actions. God told Samuel to warn the people about the consequences of their decision. Samuel told them that any king would take over their sons and daughters, their land, homes, and fields, and that eventually they would become slaves. But the people insisted that they must have a king. New Testament A CANAANITE WOMAN ASKS FOR A MIRACLE Mark 7: The Bible tells us that Jesus walked to Tyre and Sidon. These days that trip by car would take almost two days. His fame as a healer had spread far and wide. People who had never been to Jerusalem or Galilee had heard of him. A woman who was not Jewish found out where Jesus was and asked him to heal her little daughter, who was possessed by demons. His answer surprises us even today. It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs. He was emphasizing that she was not Jewish. However, she did not give up, and said, Even the dogs eat under the children s table. Jesus must have smiled at her answer and he healed her daughter. LEARNING ABOUT OUR FAITH The Importance of Prayer When do you pray? At night before you go to sleep? In the morning when you first wake up? Just before your family eats a meal together? When you are waiting for Mass to begin? During the Mass? These are all good times to pray. God is with us all the time and wants to hear the prayers of our hearts. Feel his loving presence and pray as often as you can. Alphabet Soup L is for Lamentations. A lament is a way of telling your sadness. The Israelites were heartbroken when they had to leave Jerusalem. The book of Lamentations is a long poem about this time of national sorrow. PAGE 4

BRENDAN WOMENS BOOK CLUB The title of May s book is a bit misleading Letters to a Young Catholic by George Weigel. It should be called Letter to all Catholics in that Weigel does a great job of looking at our present day world situation through past events in our Christian tradition. Come join in our discussion of this book Monday, May 28th at the QFC Canyon Park Starbucks at 7:00 pm. We are meeting there due to the Parish Office will be closed for Memorial Day weekend. YOUNG-AT-HEART SENIORS GROUP - The date for our May gathering has been changed to Wednesday, May 30. Different day but same activities: Game time at 10:00 am in Church Narthex followed by afternoon tea at 12:01 pm. Bring your favorite game or learn a new one. It is looking better and better through your efforts. Thanks, too, to those who contributed to the fundraiser in Lent the mulch, decorative landscape rocks, and new plants you see were all purchased with your money. Special thanks to the women providing the lunch afterwards (delicious!). Mark your calendar for the next monthly work party on June 9. SPIRITUAL ADOPTION UPDATE, FOURTH MONTH The baby's brain has begun maturing - a process that will continue until she is about 14 years old. Her taste buds are now working. Nutrients consumed by her mother are passed on to her within an hour or 2. Three hundred liters of fluid a day are sent to the baby via the umbilical cord. Fine hair begins to grow on her head, eyebrows and eyelashes. Facial expressions similar to the baby's parents can be seen at this time. This month REMS (rapid eye movements) have been recorded - a sign of dreaming.
