The Israelites knew when the Passover was coming, and so were not in fear, but had faith and courage, " utting into effect with one accord the divine institution. In this we can see a foretelling of the Eucharist that we celebrate according to Christ's command, Do this in memory of me. We see that Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob died in faith, although they did not see fulfillment of the promise. We live in hope that our faith will be fulfilled every time we celebrate this sacrament. We too are not to be afraid, but to have hope that our faith will be fulfilled in the coming of Christ. For if we knew what was coming, we would not be hoping, but living in knowledge. We hope in Christ for the coming of the reign of God, the restoration of all things good and wonderful, and our promised salvation. All anxiety can be dispelled in the simple words of Jesus, Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. What words could be more encouraging at those times when we wonder if we are being the diligent stewards or the bad stewards of what has been entrusted to us? BAD MANAGEMENT Anyone who has reached the age of work has probably experienced what it is like to work under a bad manager. Perhaps that person just does not know how to encourage productivity in a way that is kind and understanding and not abusive. Perhaps that person is just a bully, causing discouragement and poor morale among workers, so that many quit because they just can t stand it. Perhaps that manager does not know how to manage unproductive and disruptive people in the office, or others who are the office bullies. That steward begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk. But every manager also has a boss. And here Christ is the Master who will come at an unexpected time, and if he finds the manager not working well and unworthy of trust, he will apply appropriate sanctions. Christ will come at a time when we do not know; we place our faith and our hope in his mercy. But when we doubt ourselves we have those words of Jesus, assuring us that the Father has already given us the kingdom. We need not be afraid. We need only be mindful of Christ s mercy, and conduct ourselves in a way that is kind, gentle, and generous to others. We can indeed have hope. Adoration Thursdays 7-8 PM and Saturdays 4-5 PM with Confessions Stewardship GREAT EXPECTATIONS At the close of today s Gospel Reading from St. Luke, Jesus makes a statement that will echo forever to those who seek to practice stewardship: Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more. Jesus is speaking of His expectations of us and His faith in us. We often speak about how important faith in the Lord is, but we also need to understand that He has a strong element of faith and trust in us as well. It may not seem fair that expectations are connected to the gifts we have received, but that is in fact reality. A popular stewardship saying is not equal giving but equal sacrifice. That goes hand in hand with what the Lord is trying to teach us in the Parable of the Faithful Servant in today s Gospel. First, of course, we must recognize our gifts and that we are gifted. Then God s expectations of us are tied to how we use our gifts. If we receive more, we need to share more and give more of our time, our talent, and our treasure. ENDING SLAVERY Recently, the Vatican and the United Nations sponsored an Eliminating the Trafficking of Children and Youth conference in New York City. In his opening remarks, Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the Permanent Observer of the Holy See Mission to the UN, said, This conference seeks to make real the faces of the nearly two million children and youth who are presently being trafficked and speak about what s working, what s not working, and what needs to be done to free them, help them recover, and prevent other young people from suffering as they have. Bishop Auza said that The Second Vatican Council, St. John Paul II, and Pope Benedict have all spoke out passionately and forcefully against the infamy of human traf- terns for their own conduct on similar occasions and are continually pointing them out to the reverence and imitation of their children. These are the glorious effects of patriotism and virtue. These are the rewards annexed to the faithful discharge of that great and honorable duty, fidelity to our country I pray to God that the fair character I have described may be that of America to the latest ages. I had never heard of it before, but became very interested in reading the prayers and thoughts listed from some of the early leaders of our country. Before each Mystery of the rosary there are prayerful quotes from our founding fathers and others commenting and reflecting on our country that are as telling for our country today as they were hundreds of years ago. Here s a sample excerpted rosary that may surprise you:...the Great Governor of the Universe has led us too long and too far on the road to happiness and glory, to forsake us in the midst of it. By folly and improper conduct, proceeding from a variety of causes, we may now and then get bewildered; but I hope and trust that there is a good sense and virtue enough left to recover the right path before we shall be entirely lost. BACKPACKS MUST BE EMPTY and can be placed in the cardboard box in the Narthex. School supplies should be brought in paper shopping bags and placed in the Narthex. ALL CHILDREN ARE TREATED EQUALLY so backpacks are filled by St Gabe's school staff and not by us. Please buy materials for boys or girls. SUPPLIES NEEDED: Lined composition books, 3-ring binders and ruled paper, pocket folders, highlighters, pencil sharpeners, pencils, pens, erasers, crayons, markers, glue sticks (not liquid glue), 6" rulers and small scissors, mini staplers.
