1 October 9, 2016 CHURCH 50 LEOPARD ROAD, PAOLI, PA PHONE FA X SCHOOL 6 GREENLAWN ROAD, PAOLI, PA PHONE: FA X: MARY KA Y HE NNESSY, PRINCIPAL TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The readings today speak of healing and salvation. In Second Kings, Naaman, a commander of the army of the king of Syria, develops leprosy. He goes to a stranger, a prophet from Israel, when no one else can cure his disease. Much to his surprise, after a simple bath in the river, he is cured. In Luke s Gospel, Jesus cures ten lepers and sends them to the priest. Only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for his cure and only he hears the words, Your faith has saved you. The psalm and Timothy remind us that salvation involves justice, kindness, and faithfulness and forever links us with Jesus. In a world as broken as ours, both healing and salvation are necessary. MASS & WORSHIP SCHEDULE SATURDAY VIGIL: 5:30 PM SUNDAY MASSES: 7:30, 9, 11:30 AM, 1:30 PM Spanish; 6PM Youth Mass MONDAY-FRIDAY: 6:30& 8AM Saturday 8 AM RECONCILIATION: Saturday 4-5 PM; Thursday 7-8 PM or by Appointment ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT: Thursday 8:30 AM 8 PM with Confessions 7-8 PM; Saturday 4-5 PM CLERGY REV. MICHAEL J. LEE, O.PRAEM., PASTOR REV. CARL W. BRASCHOSS, O.PRAEM., PAROCHIAL VICAR DEACON JOHN P. LOZANO HEALING Leprosy is a disease that does not kill but lingers for years, deforming the body and isolating the sufferer. It has been used in the scriptures to suggest the destructive power of sin and its resulting isolation from the community. Jesus acts in marked contrast to this view when he touches and heals those shunned by their community. The focus of the readings today is not on the disease itself, not on sin, but on the response of two who were healed. Both lepers are outside the community of faith. Naaman is a Syrian and the leper in Luke is a Samaritan. Both are healed and experience the wholeness that healing provides. The relief and gratitude that such healing affords are more than enough, as it was for nine of the ten lepers cured in Luke. But for Naaman and the tenth leper, their healing not only makes them whole, it makes them want more. Naaman wants to take this God home with him and the tenth leper wants to thank the one who gave him life. It makes them want a continued connection to this God who brought them back to life. SALVATION Each of us has known the painful breakdown and isolation that comes with sin, personal and social, individual and community. We have known the pain that lingers for years. And we have known moments of healing, of wholeness restored, the compassionate touch of someone who reminds us that we belong not just to the community, but to God. We are not only healed of our brokenness, we are also saved from lives of isolation and misery. We receive that salvation when, like Naaman and the tenth leper, we recognize the source of the grace and mercy, and return to it and take it home with us. So not only are we healed, we become a source of healing and salvation for others in a world where the suffering does not seem to end. TODAY'S READINGS: 2 Kgs 5:14-17; Ps 98:1-4; 2 Tm 2:8-13; Lk 17:11-19 Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company

The 2nd collection will be taken up on Oct in support of missions. Thank you for your generosity. Archbishop Charles J. Chaput Stewardship MADE WHOLE Our Gospel Reading from St. Luke relates to how Jesus healed 10 lepers. However, only one realized the full sense of his healing and he returned to say Thank you. To that gesture Jesus responds to him, Stand up and go; your faith has saved you. This is another case where something may have been lost in our translation. The last line in its original Greek might also be translated Your faith has made you whole, or Your faith has made you well. In any case, the point is the importance of gratitude to God. How often have we pointed out that stewardship is a response in gratitude to God s blessings? That ongoing and consistent feeling of thanks is so important. Jesus healed 10, but only one was really completely healed. The other nine were healed physically, but only the one who felt the gratitude was healed both physically and spiritually. In that sense he was truly made whole and saved. That is the same salvation that we seek, and the key to it would seem to be that deep sense of thanksgiving as PRAYERS & READINGS PRAY FOR HEALING: Corinne Kerrigan, William A. 3 St. Norbert Bulletin Page 3 Pastor s Pulpit ECHOS OF THE TEN LEPERS... I DO IT FOR YOU These are simply five words that can make a difference in the life of all, especially Christians looking upon the Cross of Christ and reflecting and praying on that special moment of our salvation history. We reflect on what Jesus did for us and continue to pay the favor forward so to speak in what we do for those who are in need. In the book, A Call to Mercy: Hearts to Love, Hands to Serve, the author recounts an encounter with Mother Teresa and a sister in the community who was having a very difficult time: I shall not do it. He is not good, I don t work for bad people. Mother Teresa listened and said simply, If you are in trouble and quite compelled to do something for a person you dislike, do it like this. Then spreading her right palm in front of my face, she touched her right little finger with her left thumb and said, I do it for you; starting with I on the little finger, she ended with You on the thumb. The five Around Our Parish 1 2 fingers she touched for five words. Commit your work to God and say to yourself, God this work I am doing for the wretched person, I do it for you. And do it for God. Let your mind be an instrument of His will and your hands do His work. If you practice this you will find so many of the works we dislike have smoothly been done without paining you. The sister concluded, I found this a simple and effective method to do many works that at times are so essential and yet so much disliked. This is indeed a very simple message of service. However, it is extremely profound and the basis of all Christian love and service. The Norbertine Community, as you know, follows the Rule of Saint Augustine. The call to community echoes the words of St. Teresa of Kolkata. The first chapter of the rule states that: The first purpose for which you have come together is to live in unity in the house and to be of one mind and one heart on the way to God. Or if you prefer in the Latin: Primum, propter quod in unum estis congregati, ut unanimes habitetis in domo et sit vobis anima una et cor unum in Deum. Married, Single, Religious or Priest, we all reflect prayerfully on the words of St. Mother Teresa which recall the words of Christ in today s Gospel where he cures the lepers. Father Mike The fall jumped out of the blocks with the 50+ Happy Hour (1) and last week s trip to New York City (2) to explore Times Square and venture out on your own. The Back to School Picnic was another success with plenty of pizza (3), a slide train (4), hula-hoop races (5) and reconnecting with friends. There was also the announcement of this year s Gerard M. McTear Scholarships (6)funded by the Keith Thomas Perrymore Foundation to 7th Grade winners Katelyn McKenna and Matthew Innes and 8th Graders James Dilks and GianLorenzo Caria. Presenting the scholarships was Mr. Brian McTear. Unsung Angel Kevin Duffy came over last weekend and power washed the walls in the parking lot (7). My wife said: You aren t doing anything, you ve got a power washer, why don t you go over to the parish and wash those walls. So here I am missing the Ryder Cup, but I can watch it later. Thank you Kevin, and Denise, who gardens for us
