M (R ) Today s first reading from Isaiah arises out of the ordeal of the people of Jerusalem and Judea as they anticipate the end of 70 years of exile in Babylon. Their sufferings and their oppression will end, and they are promised joy like that of a great wedding upon returning to their homeland. Although this passage is probably set in the early sixth century BC, it is free of historical particulars. Accordingly, the Church has understood its imagery universally, as it proclaims God s promise of healing, hope, and happiness for all peoples, in this world and in the next. When read against this background, the story of Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding at Cana becomes a revelation of God s presence in the person of Jesus, making these promises real for us in the here and now, in the transformation of our own lives. E A? Two weeks ago, Christians celebrated the Epiphany of the Lord, or the revelation of God s light to the world, in the visit of the magi to the Christ child. In other centuries, the wedding at Cana was also included in the Epiphany, as were other events, such the baptism of Jesus and even the Nativity itself. We now have separate, yearly celebrations of the Nativity, the magi, and Jesus baptism, but this Second Sunday of Ordinary Time, in Year C of the Lectionary cycle, is the only celebration of the wedding at Cana. Even so, wedding imagery seems to dominate the Church s understanding of those other epiphanies, as we see in the antiphon used in the Liturgy of the Hours for the Epiphany. It refers to the Christ as the Bridegroom and the Church as his bride, and to the magi as hastening with their gifts to the royal wedding. It concludes with the rejoicing of the wedding guests. S J E R W John the Evangelist describes the turning of water into wine at the wedding in Cana as the beginning of the signs that Jesus would perform to manifest God s glory. Beginning here means more than first in a series. The beginning points to the source of all the signs in that royal wedding of divinity and humanity in Jesus as the Word become flesh, elevating and transforming everything it touches. The wine that Jesus provided was better than the water that had previously filled the stone jars, and it was better than the wine the guests had already been drinking. Early Christian writers saw in this transformation of water into wine an anticipation of Jesus transformation of wine into his own blood. The epiphany at Cana shows us how to become participants in that great wedding of divinity and humanity. Cleansed in holy waters and sharers in the wine that has become Christ s blood, we too can be transformed into signs of God s glorious love. View our homilies at Parish.StNorbert.org Resource Center Homilies Gratitude Miracles Today s Gospel reading from John recounts the familiar story of the wedding feast at Cana when Jesus launched His public ministry by performing His first miracle at his mother s request. In the midst of the feast, the Blessed Mother noticed that the wine had run out and pointed out the problem to Jesus. Then, she gave the servants instructions that are equally applicable to us modern-day stewards, saying, Do whatever He tells you. Jesus gives the servants a simple and seemingly mundane task, telling them to fill some stone jars with water. They did what He told them to do. And Jesus used their obedience in the accomplishment of that simple task to perform His first miracle, turning the water into the choicest wine. 3 St. Norbert Bulletin Page 3 From Fr. Steve F J... S O T D When you decide on a career path, or meet your spouse, or follow a favorite team or actor or hobby like golf, what do you do? You most likely want to know anything and everything about that vocation, job, person, personality or avocation. You can t get enough information. You re preoccupied. You totally immerse yourself in getting to know as much as you can about that golf swing, approach to working out, what s its like to drive that car, who is this person who suddenly occupies most of your waking thoughts and maybe even dreams. You might even become a follower of that person, team, occupation. So, what does following Jesus look like? I think Dr. Edward Sri says it best in this week s chapter In the Dust of the Rabbi (pages 13-21): If there s one key word that sums up the essence of discipleship, it s imitation imitating the life of the teacher. Though the word disciple (mathetes) means learner, a Jewish disciple gained more from his rabbi than just book knowledge. Discipleship was more of an apprenticeship an immersion into the rabbi s whole way of life. A disciple would live with the rabbi, share meals with the rabbi, pray with the rabbi, and observe the way the rabbi studied, taught, rested, served the poor, interacted with his friends and debated other teachers. And the goal of discipleship was to emulate the master s entire way of living. Jesus sums up this point saying, Every one when he is fully taught will be like his teacher (Lk 6:40). This biblical notion of discipleship beautifully expresses what the Christian life is all about: the imitation of Christ. It is the lifelong process of encountering Jesus anew each day, like Matthew does that moment in the tax collector s office, and being changed by Jesus so that we become more like him. But this encounter is not a one-time act. Jesus is constantly calling us to take that next step in faith, that next step closer to him. Indeed, he calls us throughout our lives to ongoing conversion so that we become more like Christ. Over time, we start to think as he thinks, see as he sees, love as he loves, and act as he acts. When Christians talk about growing in holiness or pursuing sanctity or becoming saints, they are, in essence, talking about the imitatio Christi, or what he Scriptures would call discipleship. That s what we are all about here at St. Norbert parish as we aspire to become one in Christ as a community of fervent disciples, who listen attentively for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and who lovingly embrace Jesus, present in the poor, the alienated and the spiritually hungry. The Inn serves the daily needs of the poor and homeless with food, clothing, and hospitality. Our St. Norbert s ministry has served every month for many years. S V Presiding at today s 1:30 Hispanic Mass at St. Norbert s with Fr. Steve will be Auxiliary Bishop Edward Deliman who is the Vicar for Hispanic Catholics for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Bishop Deliman has heard about our Hispanic Mass which draws over 150 people each Sunday and is eager to meet and discuss how our efforts have borne fruit. Our Hispanic ministry is very active in outreach and evangelization to the Paoli area Spanish-speaking community. The first Thursday of every month, there is a Bilingual Rosary during Adoration in the Oratory from 7-8.
