In today s first reading, Ezra the priest reads the scroll of the law to the people returned from exile. They weep then are joyful. Israel s relationship with God had always been defined by how they kept and lived God s law. The author of Psalm 96 likewise praises the law of God as the source of wisdom, joy and enlightenment, purity and justice. In his advice to the bickering Corinthians, Paul points out that, just as God has made all parts of a human body essential for the health of the whole, living as Christ s body requires that each member be recognized as necessary for the good of all. Finally, in Luke s Gospel Jesus claims that the Spirit is sending him to relieve human suffering. Like Ezra, he is reading from a scroll, proclaiming God s law of mercy to those in need. A P? T C R? R? Twenty-first-century American culture relies so much on brief social media texts Facebook, Twitter that we might wonder how the men, women, and those children old enough to understand (Nehemiah 8:2) could spend the entire morning listening to Ezra the priest read from the book of Jewish law. Returning home after 70 years of exile, the people had to rebuild their homeland the city of Jerusalem, the temple, social and economic structures all of it. Listening to Ezra reading the ancient law seems to have reconnected the people to traditions that gave meaning to all their struggles. They were weeping tears of joy! The psalmist is likewise moved by the beauty of God s law. It is not a bothersome restriction on human behavior, but a wise guide for people seeking wisdom and enduring happiness. At the conclusion of his reading, Ezra instructs them to be joyful, to eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks... for today is holy to our LORD (Nehemiah 8:10). Rejoicing is the proper response to the rediscovery of God s law. A E G T A! Ezra also tells the people to allot portions to those who had nothing prepared, to make sure that everyone is included, whether or not they had anything to share. When Jesus reads a much shorter passage to a much smaller assembly in the synagogue, he announces his intention to ensure that no one is excluded. The Spirit of the Lord is leading him to heal the afflictions of those who are almost routinely exiled from mainstream society, people who are poor, people who have been in prison, people with physical or mental disabilities. Unlike Jesus, we cannot work miracles to heal them or mitigate their conditions; but like Jesus, we can work to bring these exiles to a homeland where God s law ensures that everyone can rejoice, because everyone is included. View our homilies at Parish.StNorbert.org Resource Center Homilies Gratitude Equal Dignity In St. Paul's letter to the Corinthians, it states If they were all one part, where would the body be? But as it is there are many parts, yet one body (1 COR 12:18-20). What does this teach us as Christian stewards? It shows us that we all have equal dignity and worth in God s sight, and that if God sees us as equally precious, we should view each other in this same light. It teaches us to humbly recognize our own gifts as well as the giftedness of every member of our parish family. And, while God designed us to be ultimately dependent on Him, it seems He has also designed us to need each other! This is part of the beauty and richness of a stewardship way of life. No one person can do it all in life whether in family life or parish life. 3 St. Norbert Bulletin Page 3 From Fr. Steve B T... M T M Deacon John is fond of saying, faith is caught, not taught. Like anything in life, sports, love, work, you name it, you need to roll up your sleeves and immerse yourself in the experience, the relationship, the practice of your chosen profession, avocation, hobby or vocation. That leads us to this week s topic of looking at discipleship as an apprenticeship. When Paul raises up disciples of his own, he emphasizes the importance not just of learning concepts from him but also of imitation: Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ (1 Corithians 11:1), writes Dr. Edward Sri in his book Into His Likeness: Be Transformed as a Disciple of Christ. Dr. Sri continues, If we believe in God, show up to Mass each week, give up something for Lent, try to be good to others, and maybe even volunteer for something at the parish, we feel pretty good about ourselves. We tell ourselves, I go to church. I m nice to people. I don t murder or rob banks. I m doing okay as a Christian. But to strive to be a great Catholic? No, that s not for me. That s only for the really holy people like Mother Teresa and the pope! (p. 37) The heart of the matter is my interior struggle to imitate Christ in my daily life. If I believe all the right things but don t grow in prayer, kindness, purity, patience, mercy, forgiveness, generosity, and care for the weak and the poor, I am failing in my life as a disciple. Without love, all the outward badges of faith do not render me a faithful disciple. If I speak in tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am noting. If I Give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not life, I gain nothing (1 Corithian 13:1-3. (p 38) So, being an apprentice calls for us to do more than just go through the motions, get your ticket punched each Sunday, simply following the rules. It is about intentionally walking in Jesus steps. So, what s your next step in being an apprentice of Jesus Christ? Fr. 6 Page 6 January 27, 2019 A Y A... L B? Our weekly Saints series has been pretty amazing. St. Padre Pio s life from bilocation, to healings, to the stigmata was awe-inspiring, but also a little intimidating. It reminded me of Dr. Edward Sri s quote from his Discipleship book:...some saints can stay up all night in prayer; others can levitate or bilocate; and others can wear hair shirts, throw themselves in rose bushes and fast for 40 days for penance. Meanwhile, we struggle just to wake up on time, say our prayers each day, and keep our rooms clean. So true for me anyway, but then he goes on to say that the saints lives were a lifelong process of gradual, ongoing, conversion. I know that's a relief and comforting to keep in mind. God gives different gifts to each. Join us on Tuesdays at 7 in the St. Norbert Parish Office lower level meeting room for our next Saint. Also, on Saturday, Feb 9, at 11, there will be a Memorial Mass for Joe Abraham, our core team leader who passed away two years ago this Feb.
