1 September 2, 2018 CHURCH 50 L R, P, P P F SCHOOL 6 G R, P, P P : F : M K H, P 22 S I O T St. James begins by instructing us that All good giving and every perfect gift is from above. We don't make the rules, but God grants us good gifts that we are to share generously with others. He says, Be doers of the word and not hearers only... Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world. We are to care for our brothers and sisters in need, and especially for the children, who are often the forgotten little ones. Jesus further defines what being defiled by the world really means. From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. Quite a list! Jesus asserts that All these evils come from within and they defile. Not following man-made laws did not make the list. M (R ) H T It would be easy to wonder why the disciples ate with unwashed hands, especially in those times when dust and dirt were plentiful, and the disciples worked with their hands as fishermen. But these scriptures are not concerned so much with physical cleanliness as with spiritual cleanliness. The Pharisees, who were so picky about following every letter of every law, had an aha moment in which they saw an opportunity to accuse Jesus and the disciples of breaking the law of Moses. Jesus responds in a very sensible way. He says, Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, But their hearts are far from me; In vain do they worship me, Teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition." T T The same could be said about some of today s Christians, who are so enamored of the past that they cannot see that Jesus has brought about a new interpretation of tradition. Just as we celebrate birthdays with cake and candles, perhaps now with chocolate cake and tiny candles whereas in the past it was only white cake and bigger candles tradition adapts to the times while holding on to the essence of what was celebrated before. Tradition preserves the essence while changing the details, something that some of us may fail to grasp. Such people may want everything to be the same in every detail and accuse others of failure to worship properly because they do not hold to past practices. Like the Pharisees, sometimes we want to cling to the way things were done our childhood, never accepting change of any kind. We fail to see the essence of the tradition preserved in a new way of doing things. Perhaps we don t understand the essence of tradition, or perhaps we are so unsure of ourselves that we want to be instructed strictly in the old ways, like the Pharisees who knew the law by heart and were quite comfortable practicing what poorer people had no way of doing perfectly. It was the poorer people who followed Jesus because he offered them hope. It would be well for us to remember that the essence of tradition is the worship of God, not the preservation of human habits. We can learn to practice charity and love in emulation of others who have willingly, in following Jesus, held their faith to mean loving their neighbor. V S H S N. Gratitude Measuring Stick In today s Gospel from Mark, Jesus instructs us in the best way we can honor Him, teaching us the meaning of true worship. Jesus reveals that the way we truly worship Him is by giving Him our hearts. We also learn in this Gospel passage what our Lord does not want the pious lip service that the scribes and Pharisees offer. But how can we determine if we really are giving our hearts over to the Lord and not just paying Him lip service? We must examine our lives to see if they reflect a life lived out for Him. Stewardship gives us a concrete means to examine our lives in three fundamental areas the use of our time, our talents, and our material gifts. A stewardship way of life invites and challenges us to make specific commitments in each of these areas on a regular basis, giving us a practical means to commit to the Lord. 3 St. Norbert Bulletin Page 3 Pastor s Pulpit L T T L... A E O H Last week, we held a special Taize prayer service for all those abused by clergy and for families and all of us grieving for our Church over the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report and the latest revelations on this scandal. Healing, forgiveness and justice are words that have been echoing in the minds of many and were reflected on that special evening. A Taize prayer service is a combination of meditative music, silence, brief Scripture readings, a psalm, more silence, music, a very short reflection and intentions. For those who were not able to attend our prayer night, I would like to share with you some of the intentions from the participants that we prayed together for healing on so many levels: P For healing and hope. For all the faithful priests who serve us. For all our children who have left our Church because of abuse. That we not forget to pray for the inner healing of the perpetrators. For hope for those whose hope is faltering. Lord, please heal all victims of any traumatic memories through your mercy. For comfort and peace for our victims. May God provide solutions for all. For humility and acknowledgment from the cardinals and bishops. Healing for the Church, Lord. I pray that the generations after us will embrace the true Gospel message to love one another and to call out evil when necessary. For the victims who have lost their self-esteem and whose ability to relate to other human beings has been shattered, may God pour out His healing and make them whole in spirit. That God will cleanse His Church and remove its stain no matter how difficult. For anyone who is depressed, anxious, or emotionally traumatized by events in their life, I pray. Wisdom in this time of sadness and pain in our Church, and care for all survivors of abuse. For Peace, Healing and Hope for victims of sexual abuse and for Christ-like response of loving courage and decisive change from Church leaders. Justice in the civil courts for survivors of all child sexual abuse no matter how long ago it happened. That our punctured lives will be mended through His Love. Recently, Archbishop Chaput wrote a column On Anger, Grief, and the Future. 1 Here is a brief excerpt that says a lot about what many of us are feeling right now: The anger Jesus showed toward the Temple moneychangers, the Sadducees, and the Pharisees was not merely acceptable but right and good. The anger Philadelphians felt toward the Archdiocese after the 2005 and 2011 grand jury reports was likewise well placed and justified. We ve worked hard to remember the lessons of that time. Seven years later, we are keenly aware of the evil that sexual abuse victims have suffered. We understand our obligation, and we re sincerely committed, to help survivors heal. We ve worked hard to ensure the safety of children and families in Church-related environments. In that task, the guidance and counsel of laypeople including former law enforcement officials and professionals in assisting abuse survivors have been especially valuable. We know that rebuilding the trust of our people and the morale of our good priests can only be accomplished with a record of doing the right thing over time. The roughly 100,000 laypeople and clergy we ve trained in recent years to recognize and report the signs of sexual abuse are part of that effort. This [past] week s grand jury report on clergy sex abuse in six Pennsylvania dioceses covers more than seven decades. Some people, credible people, have challenged its processes and disputed elements of its content. But the substance of the report is brutally graphic and profoundly disturbing as a chronicle of evil inflicted on hundreds of innocents. The only acceptable responses are grief and support for the victims, and comprehensive efforts to ensure that such things never recur. And anger. Anger is also a righteous and necessary response but it needs to be an anger that bears good fruit; an anger guided by clear thinking, prudence, and a desire for real justice. That kind of anger all of us should feel this week and carry with us into the days ahead. Finally, several parishioners have contacted me, and we have met. For me, and hopefully them, our meeting has been helpful, fruitful, intense, prayerful and powerful. Please do not hesitate to contact me after Mass or call the Parish Office if you would just simply like to talk. Saint Michael the Archangel defend us! Fr. Mike 1
