MICHAEL J. LEE, O.PRAEM., PASTOR R EV. CARL W. BRASCHOSS, O.PRAEM., PAROCHIAL VICAR D EACON JOHN P. LOZANO FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME "Holy, holy, holy!" Ancient languages, like the Hebrew used in the scriptures, did not have a way to express superlatives in one word. Isaiah could not say God was "holiest," so he used the threefold repetition of the same word. This bit of scriptural minutiae about these "three little words" that we sing at Mass every Sunday serves as a reminder that answering God's call has to be grounded in awareness of God's holiness. In Isaiah and the Gospel passage today, we hear accounts of the revelation of God's power and might: the seraphim in the temple and the miraculous catch of fish. These are not wondrous revelations for their own sakes. They lead to a response in mission, Isaiah's "Here I am, send me" (Isaiah 6:8) and the disciples' leaving everything to follow Jesus. And so must our own "Holy, Holy, Holy!" lead us to Christ in the Eucharist every Sunday, and to a life following him day by day. FIRST IMPRESSIONS We talk about making a good first impression or falling in love at first sight. Today's scripture accounts reveal a little bit to us about first encounters that set in motion some very important scriptural lives. Isaiah has a momentous experience of God enthroned while the seraphim chant "Holy, holy, holy!" (Isaiah 6:3). Paul hints at his conversion and call to be an apostle when he refers to himself as one "born abnormally" (1 Corinthians 15:8), which is to say he is the only apostle--the "least," he calls himself--who did not know Jesus during his earthly ministry. We hear Luke's version of the first impression the disciples had of Jesus, when they learn an important lesson about being a follower of Jesus: you can labor all you want, but if you do not allow the Lord into your work, it will be in vain. When he enters, get ready to be amazed. FINAL IMPRESSIONS John, the only other evangelist to recount the story of the miraculous catch of fish, places the story after the resurrection of Christ from the dead, not at the beginning of his ministry as Luke does. Unlike Matthew and Mark, wherein the disciples follow Jesus upon his call, Luke seemed to know that his listeners would comprehend the call to discipleship better if it followed a miraculous sign. (And Peter's acknowledgment of his sinfulness echoes Isaiah's description of his unclean lips.) But whether it's Luke describing the beginning of the disciples following Jesus in mission or John's depiction of the risen Christ preparing his followers for the mission following his return to the Father, the point is the same, and remains the same for us today. Paul expresses it best. It does not matter who preaches the Gospel, or where or when, but only that it is, through the grace of God in us, preached and believed. TODAY S READINGS: Is 6:1-2a, 3-8; Ps 138:1-5, 7-8; 1 Cor 15:1-11; Lk 5:1-11

Of course, each of us is called by God to be a disciple. The challenge for us is to hear that call, understand it, and then to respond to it with action. The first reading from Isaiah reminds us of a hymn based upon that reading most Catholics have sung and heard for the past few decades Here I am Lord. The hymn portrays Isaiah s response to God calling him. The lyrics in the refrain, known to many, are Here I am Lord. It is I lord. I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, where you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. The Gospel from Luke is a story known popularly of how Jesus told Peter and James and John to go out in Peter s boat and fish again, even though they had caught nothing previously. The catch was enormous and it was a changing point in the vocations of those men. They were fishermen, and had probably been fishermen since they were boys. Fishing was their vocation, but Jesus called Prayers & Readings PRAY FOR HEALING: Especially Yolanda DiAddezio, Paul Chmura, Betti Horstmann, Corinne Kerrigan, Christian T.A. Some of us, like Isaiah, are called to vocations of discipleship which function parallel to our life s vocation, our jobs. Others, like Peter, are called to lifetime vocations holy orders. The point is not which vocation we follow it is that as good stewards we recognize we have a vocation a role in building the Kingdom of God. Are we prepared and are we responding in the way we should? Here I am Lord I will go, Lord, where you lead me. Copyright 2013 Catholic Stewardship Consultants, OUR VISION St. Norbert Parish aspires to become one in Christ as a community of fervent disciples, who listen attentively for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and who lovingly embrace Jesus, present in the poor, the alienated and the spiritually hungry. 3 Page 3 From Our Pastor ON THE WAY: GALILEE This Sunday s Gospel takes place on the Lake of Gennesaret also known as the Sea of Galilee. To finally be on this Sea is quite an experience. I actually texted Fr. Carl and told him I was on the Sea of Galilee. He texted back: Have you walked on water yet? We had a good laugh and I said I was afraid to get out of the boat. Coincidentally, Jeff Cavins talk on that trip across the sea was on Getting Out of the Boat. Jeff said we need to get out of our comfort zone and take the leap into Jesus arms. As Lent approaches this coming Wednesday, we need to step out of the boat and trust Jesus. We need to take this Lenten season as an opportunity to get closer to Jesus. In today s Gospel, Jesus says to Simon: Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men. Commenting on this passage, St. Augustine wrote: Christ says: Give me this fisherman, this man without education or experience, this man to whom no senator would deign to speak, not even if he were buying fish. Once I have taken possession of him, it will be obvious that it is I who am at work in him. Is Jesus at work in your life? Take this Lent to deepen your relationship with Jesus. Take the opportunity to engage and meet Jesus in one of our Lenten programs. You won t be disappointed. Fr. Mike Worship & Prayer Fishing boats link up for Pilgrimage teaching on Sea of Galilee WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13 ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES Mass will be celebrated at 6:30, 8, and 9:15 AM and 7 PM. Ashes will be distributed during the Masses. Daylesford Abbey will celebrate Mass at 11:30 AM with distribution of ashes. ACTS OF PENANCE FOR LENT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE All persons who are 14 years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons 18 years of age and older, up to and including their 59th birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. Obviously, health conditions dictate the ability to fast Good Stewards and parishioners should follow the advice of their physicians regarding abstinence. All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance (offered on Wednesday evenings in Lent starting Feb 27th), to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions and education programs. In this regard, the Little Black Lenten Books and children s booklets are available in the Narthex for a free will donation. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended on Thursdays from 8:30 AM to 3 PM. Almsgiving is another Lenten tradition and Operation Rice Bowl (materials can be found in the Narthex), which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and the world is one of many ways to provide for the poor. SINGING, PRAYING, SERVING... ON THE GO FOR THE LORD We love to do God s work, said Lauretta Reagan and Lillian Young. Besides, we love to keep active and not sitting in a chair. We ve done this all our lives. For Lauretta and Lillian, no grass grows under their feet. The two are in their 90s, yet they are always on the go. There s daily mass, weekly Bible study, Adoration on Thursdays, traveling to nursing homes and senior groups with the Surrey Choral Group, singing in the choir at the Saturday 5:30 PM vigil mass, Respect Life activities locally including marches (although Lillian stopped attending the annual Washington march this year saying some of our parts are wearing out ) and participating in the St. Norbert Legion of Mary where they pray the rosary weekly while also visiting nursing homes and praying with others. I started with the Legion 18 years ago, says Lillian when she lived on Long Island. For Lauretta, she became involved when my boyfriend Bill Wynkopp (deceased last year) got me involved. He did everything at St. Norbert s and we even did the Quick Journey Through the Bible years ago when it was first offered. Lately, in addition to their busy schedule, the two have been spending Monday afternoons at Camilla Hall with the retired IHM nuns praying the rosary, visiting, singing, and laughing. Nothing is ever wasted that you give to the Lord, Lauretta said. Whatever you do, you get back 100 fold, added Lillian. Words of wisdom from Lauretta and Lillian that are good for us all.

This could be an original work or a work from literature or art history--any work that opens up the gospel reading for group discussion. The arts will be used as a springboard for discussion and, ultimately, as a means of connecting deeply with God's Word. You don't have to be a creative professional--all are welcome.
