Come with me And you ll be In a world of Pure imagination Take a look And you ll see Into your imagination As we embark on our adventure into the Gospel of Dr. Seuss this summer we will stretch our imaginations a little bit. We will look not only into fantastical worlds created out of the imagination of Seuss, but into our own imaginations as well. In stretching our imaginations we will open ourselves to new ways of seeing, reading, and hearing God s message of love and grace. Frederick Buechner writes, If imagination plays a major role in the creation of literature, it plays a major one also in the appreciation of it. It is essential to read imaginatively as well as to write imaginatively if you want to know what s really going on. A good novelist helps us do this by stimulating our imaginations sensory detail is especially useful in this regard, such as the way characters look and dress, the sounds and smells of the places they live and so on but then we have to do our part. We have to do our part. Our part this summer will be laughing at, and learning from, the whimsical rhymes we hear about Sam, the Lorax, and all of our favorite Seuss creatures. It will be opening our hearts and minds to the movement of the Spirit as we engage scripture in different ways. Our part in imagining will be to come away from this summer a little different than where we begin it. And in doing so, maybe, hopefully, we ll see a bit of God s kingdom around us. Blessings and peace as we begin this summer journey together. Bill 1

4 NEWS FROM ROBERTA PIPPETT S TRIP TO ZIMBABWE Roberta Pippett, who with her late husband, Ralph, originally founded the Heather Chimhoga Orphan Care Center (HCOC), traveled to Zimbabwe in late April for her annual visit. She will be there for several weeks. She and Ralph were also instrumental in forming the (Denver Presbytery) Zimbabwe Mission Partnership, a group of 12 churches that support the HCOC and that works very hard to help it become self-sustaining. Roberta has been meeting with HCOC staff, checking on the progress of a poultry project that is now producing income, meeting with individual child-headed families and looking into expansion of the solar power usage. She seems to be very pleased with the dedication of the staff, the growth of the spiritual education efforts with the children and the move toward greater self-sustainability at the HCOC. In addition, she was delighted to attend a church service at which Ralph was honored; she included a picture of the Memorial Garden that was planted in remembrance of Ralph, whom the people loved dearly. Roberta has dedicated the remainder of her life to promoting and supporting the HCOC. To read her complete journals (2, as of 5/15) please go to and click on the word Journals in the horizontal list of topics across the top of the cover page. The Annual Mission Barbecue will be held on Saturday, Sept 6. More details will be available beginning in July. The total collection for One Great Hour of Sharing was $1,000.25!! Thank you all for your generosity! 4 Lomagundi Clinic Mission Fundraisers Support the Lomagundi Clinic Mission in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe. This clinic was started by the Presbyterian Church after Pastor Paul Neschangwe was in an automobile accident and experienced the poor healthcare system in his country. The World Health Organization has determined that Zimbabwe has the worst healthcare in any country. 4 of the 5 district hospitals don t have doctors. There is rarely medicine available and when it is, it is too expensive for most Zimbabweans to obtain. Hundreds die every day from lack of medicine. Two concerts are planned to support this incredible mission. On 06/20/2014 at 6:30 pm the Queen City Jazz Band will perform at Wheat Ridge Presbyterian Church and on 09/13/2014 the Kutandara Marimba Group will perform African Music, at Arvada Presbyterian Church at 7 pm. Each concert is $15.00 or $25.00 for a special concert package for both concerts. Children under 10 free. Contact Kim Graber at or Starr Hildebrande at for more information. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Annual Flower Sale. We made $1, profit which will fund many scholarships for camp and for youth going on the mission trip. To qualify for the scholarships ($50 for mission trip; $100 for camperships), we ask that each child or youth do 10 hours of volunteer work at the church. Forms are available in the Church Office. Thank you again for your participation in the Flower Sale! Barbara Swanson

5 FROM YOUR LIBRARY COMMITTEE Thanks to those who have volunteered already to help with Vacation Bible Camp June We anticipate quite a few kids, similar to what we had last year. We still need some group leaders (would like 2 per class for safety reasons) and some help with our mission project for those staying at Highlands while working on flood mitigation. We just need supervisors for that project. Remember all volunteers are welcome to stay for lunch (and their kids, too!) every day. We also will combine our volunteers with the youth's spaghetti dinner on June 22nd for the orientation meeting with the Highland counselors. If you are able to Host these counselors over night, we do need one or two hosts for the week. Please let the office or Mary Kennedy know if you can do this, or sign up on the display in the Narthex. Thanks! * * * We need your help!! During Vacation Bible School June our children will be decorating bags to make a thank you/hospitality toiletry bag for volunteers who will be arriving from all over and will be staying at Highlands Camp this summer. The volunteers will be in Colorado to help with flood mitigation. We are asking the congregation to help us by donating small travel size items such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion, bug repellent, soap, chapstick and sunscreen etc. We have already received 50 toothbrushes and dental floss! A donation box will be located in the narthex. Do you love books? Are you excited about learning new things? Do you have some time to invest in a new venture? Then we have an adventure for you! The Library Committee has re -formed and is in the process of redoing our present library. And we can really use your help. Please join us in a new and vital project join the Library Committee! For information, please contact Mary Ann Hood at 303- Keep in your prayers and thoughts the youth and adult leaders as they travel to Minnesota for the Mission Trip June 6 to June 14: Jenni Braun Paliszewski Carissa Mendez Bill Davis Jared Braun Kira Braun Shelby Brizzolara-Dove Steele Brizzolara-Dove Claire Hammack Shea Hood Taya Mendez Trenity Tanner THANK YOU!! 5

6 From the Worship and Music Work Group Our prayer bear tree in the narthex is almost bare. This tree was started a number of years ago as a spot to pick up a soft little critter to carry prayerful thoughts to someone needing some cheer. Over the years many prayers and good wishes have traveled with these little critters. Here s another reminder that Summer Worship hours start June 1, with worship beginning at 9 am. And since it s summer, the choir will be taking the summer off. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the Narthex for YOUR chance to provide summer music. All forms and combinations of vocal and/or instrumental music are welcome. Contact Marsha Morton at A hearty thank-you to the choir and Director Becky Carlisle for a wonderful year of music. A special thank-you to Becky for putting together the combined choirs and orchestra for the Christmas and Easter programs. We love and appreciate you, Becky! The "tree" is currently inhabited by a frog and a bear. They would like some company while they hang out at church waiting to go home to somebody needing a little cheer. If you have any critters (preferably soft, plush ones) willing to travel to new homes, you may leave them by the coat tree in the narthex. Since many of us will be traveling throughout the upcoming months and visiting other churches, we request that you bring back the bulletins from churches you visit. The Worship/Music Committee is conducting a Go Out and Evaluate program, to see how other churches worship, and what makes other churches tick. Thank you for your support. If you have questions, please contact the Worship and Music Work Group. Marsha Morton, Worship/Music Elder THE CHURCH GARAGE/BAKE SALE IS COMING Marsha Morton will take over as head of the Garage and Bake Sales after the many years the Swansons have done the Garage Sale. The dates of the sale are Fri. and Sat. August 1-2. Pricing days are Mon. - Thurs. July 28 31, from 8 am to noon. Doughnuts and coffee provided. So please save all your Garage Sale items. Note that we cannot start bringing items to church until after VBS, which is June 23 - June 27. I MUST have a large crew to help bring the items to the narthex on Sunday, July 27; to price the items the week of July 28 - July 31; to provide baked goods; to help "man" the garage sale on Aug. 1 and 2; and cashiers for both days. I also need a "Grill-Meister" to man the BBQ grill for the food sale. I won't be able to do this without YOUR help, so please contact Marsha Morton at More details to follow! 6
