1 August The Shepherd s Crook is published for GSPC members and friends. PH: FAX: WEB SITE: Pastor: Rev. Bill Davis Office Manager: Barbara Mitchell Organist/Choir Director Becky Carlisle Treasurer: Jerry Zarret Assistant Treas. I hope you are having as much fun discovering the timeless truths we encounter in these children s stories as I am. From comments you ve shared following worship, or stopping by the office it sure sounds like it! I can t wait to share our last couple of Seuss stories together. Of course the stories of Dr. Seuss aren t the only story that shines truth, hope, and love into our lives. Marva Dawn writes that it is fashionable these days to discuss the Bible and doctrine and the Church in terms of story. Of course, it is true Christianity depends on the combined stories of Israel and Jesus of Nazareth and certain claims about what those stories mean. While it has become more fashionable, it has also been helpful in recent years to reclaim parts of the story we have as a people of faith that we have either forgotten or not read in a really long time. To help us relearn, and reacquaint ourselves with the entirety of God s story this fall in worship we will begin using the Narrative Lectionary. The Narrative Lectionary is a four-year cycle of readings for use in worship and preaching (compared to the three-year cycle of the Revised Common Lectionary). Each week two texts are assigned a preaching text and an accompanying text. Starting in September we will begin in Genesis and follow a broad outline of the Old Testament story. Around Christmas we will turn to readings from the Gospel of Matthew, which will lead us through Lent and into Easter. Following Easter we will read some of the early resurrection stories of the church written to those earliest believers before we arrive at Pentecost together. It is my hope that through our use of the Narrative Lectionary that we might be able to hear in fresh ways God s story as told through scripture. And in rehearing this story we might find new ways of seeing God s movement within our own story. Frederick Buechner reminds us it is absolutely crucial, therefore, to keep in constant touch with what is going 1 (continued)

2 on in your own life s story and to pay close attention to what is going on in the stories of others lives. If God is present anywhere, it is in those stories that God is present. I can t wait to see how your story continues to intersect with God s story, and our story as believers at Good Shepherd. Stories are powerful things, let s keep telling the story of God s unconditional love together. FINANCE NEWS If you would like a copy of your six-month giving statement, please contact Joyce or Noel Matthews and we will get one for you. There will be both a 5K and a 10K Walk so you can choose which is best for you! We will have pledge envelopes for the walkers available by Sept. 1. Please think about whether you would like to be a walker or a supporter. Half of the money raised each year goes to local food distribution organizations while the other half is distributed by the CROP agency to national and international hunger programs. * * * 2CENTS A MEAL, also known as CENTS- ABILITY, is a program administered by the national Presbyterian Church Hunger Program. At Good Shepherd we have participated in this program for many years. Currently, the children collect this offering on the first Sunday each month. We encourage each of you to contribute 2 cents for every meal you eat in a month. If you eat 3 meals a day, that s $1.80 per month. And, if you actually put money in your 2 Cents bank/can once a day, or 3 times a day, you ll be reminded each time you eat that there are many people who are less fortunate than we are, perhaps very hungry people! In the last 3 months (May, June, July) we have collected $ for 2 Cents a Meal! Half of that is distributed to our own Food Bank and the remaining half is sent to the Presbyterian Hunger Program. Thank you all for your continued generosity! * * * Jan Myers Pastel Workshops: Since March, Jan has offered 4 workshops and she s had wonderful response! All fees have been donated either to Good Shepherd s Food Bank ($530) or to Highlands Camp ($60). Thank you, Jan, for all your hard work and enthusiastic instruction! We look forward to additional workshops in 2015 following Jan s recovery from her upcoming two knee replacements. * * * During the month of June the Food Bank gave out 204 orders to 148 families, serving a total of 533 people (which included 215 children served). Items needed for August are toilet paper, mac & cheese and bar soap. If you are able to donate any of these items, please bring to the Food Bank or place in the bench in the Narthex. Thank you for your continued support. 4

5 VACATION BIBLE CAMP The week of June was a busy one at our church! We hosted Vacation Bible Camp for 35 active kids from age 3 through grade 5. The counselors from Highlands came with enthusiasm and energy, prepared to deliver an exciting curriculum to the bunch. The theme for this year was Living in God s Time and covered the entire church year in one week. We celebrated Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost! This week could not have been successful without the many volunteers from Good Shepherd that made it possible. I would like to thank all those who helped with VBC. They are: Preplanning: Ruth Vazquez, Paulene Thompson (who designed many of the favorite crafts), Mary Ann Hood, Bill Davis, Mary Kennedy. Thanks to Henry Heckart for hanging and taking down the banner, and Mary Ann Hood for helping post posters at Front Range. Thanks to the youth for distributing flyers door-to-door in the neighborhood. Decorating: Ruth Vazquez, Hannah Bond, Maria Bond, Anna Bond. Individual Pictures: Barbara Mitchell Preschool: Mary Ann Hood, Jillian Hammack, Shea Hood, Shelby Brizzolara-Dove. Kindergarten Grade 1: Jenni Braun Paliszewski, Joan Moore, Trenity Tanner, Dorothy Bennett, Hannah Bond, Beth Taylor. Grades 2 & 3: Tom McConnell, Claire Hammack, Steel Brizzolara-Dove. Grades 4& 5: Carissa Mendez, Mary McCarron, Taya Mendez, Dakota Chartier. Kitchen: Snacks and lunches: Diana Bennett, Judy Ezzell, Marsha Morton, Louise Schwartz (popcorn), Gloria Robinson. Music: Sara Tyburczy, Bill Davis. Games: Jared Braun, Kira Braun. Crafts: Ruth Vazquez, Julie Klahn (who helped everywhere in Fellowship Hall), Anna Paliszewski (who also went where needed). Mission Project: Bill and Linda Keck Registration: Chad and Stacy Hestermann, Dick and Robin Kelly Lunch Providers: Choir, Sometimes Circle. (Marsha Morton, Mary McCarron and Gwen Thompson) Overnight hosts for Highlands Counselors: Jim and Mary McCarron, Gloria Robinson We also had businesses that donated to our mission project of making thank you bags for people coming to Highlands to help with flood repair. Thanks to Burnham Oral Surgery, Stoll Orthodontics, Clear Creek Care Center, Mountain Man Fruit and Nut, and The Children s Museum. If you are in any of these businesses please thank them on behalf of our church. Thanks to those who donated small items to include in these bags! They were really full! Thanks also to Jimmy Johns on 104 th in Federal Heights for providing the lunch on Friday to our volunteers. Atlanta Bread Company donated giant cookies for our lunch one day, as well as giving all the children children s menus which included a free cookie! All the lunches were delicious! Thanks to the Sometimes Circle which donated $250 for this year s VBC. Our expenses aren t covered by the $5 per child charge, so we appreciate all the help! 5 (continued on next page)

6 Vacation Day Camp..continued This was a very successful Vacation Bible Camp. The service project accomplished by the counselors was painting the younger elementary Sunday school classroom. Henry Heckart came every afternoon to help with supplies and advice. It looks very nice now, with fresh paint. We couldn t remember how long it had been since it had been painted. Stop by and see the results. We did save the mural that is on the wall. Although our numbers were down from last year we did have a consistent turnout. Everyone came back almost every day. It is disappointing that more of our own children were not able to attend because of work and day care issues. Perhaps we should consider an evening Vacation Bible Camp in the future so those children can come. It is something to think about. Many of the children who have come to Vacation Bible Camp in the past are too old to attend now, which is one reason for the drop in numbers. If anyone has ideas about advertising better, please let the Christian Education Work Group know. Thanks again to all the people who made it possible for us to help these 35 children have a memorable week. If I forgot anyone, please let me know so I can thank them publically. Many who attended said, See you next year! Mary Kennedy, CE Elder Maria Shupe reports the thank-you bags we sent to Highlands Presbyterian Camp and Retreat Center for volunteers coming to help with flood repair are very much appreciated and being used. Thanks to all who contributed to those bags during Vacation Bible Camp! We filled 50 paper bags with goodies and sent the extra materials along with them. REMEMBER THE CHURCH GARAGE SALE AND BAKE SALE FRIDAY & SATURDAY, AUGUST 1 & 2 8 A.M. 2 P.M.
