Ash Wednesday is on February 14th this year. Lent ends with the start of the Easter season. Christians use the ashes on our foreheads as a symbol of repentance. Ashes are made by burning the blessed palms that were distributed on Palm Sunday the year before. The word Lent means spring. The 40 days of Lent represent the 40 days that Jesus fasted in the desert. In these 40 days, we try to give up something that we love or choose to do something extra. This personal sacrifice reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice given to us by God when his son Jesus died on the cross, and also makes more room in our hearts to focus on the sacrifice of Christ. Every Catholic is encouraged to attend Mass at one point of the day of Ash Wednesday. Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.

Mr. S: Harrison High School JW : What is your favorite memory of your childhood? Mr. S : I have many memories from my childhood. I had a very happy childhood, so I do not have a favorite memory. JW : What did you do for fun as a child? Mr. S : Played baseball a lot and rode our bikes around Miami Whitewater. JW: Where did you go to college? Mr. S: Graduated from UC and attended University of Maryland and Xavier. JW: What made you want to teach? Mr. S: I got a Geology degree and you can only do a few things with this degree. You can either travel around the world or teach. I did not want to travel around the world, so I decided to teach. JW: What previous professional jobs have you had before coming to St. John s? Mr. S: I was a soldier on active duty and worked at the education department at Museum of Natural History. JW: What do you enjoy doing outside of teaching? These were called the Jim Crow Laws. One of these laws had African Americans sit on the back of the bus and Caucasians, or white people, in the front. One day Rosa Parks was on a busy bus when a white man asked the bus driver to have one of the African Americans in the colored section to give up their seat. While the other people obeyed, Rosa Parks did not. For this she was arrested. She said that the law was wrong, not her. This is why we honor Rosa Parks during black history month. 4 Page 4 VALENTINE and lenten cooking Sugar Cookies Lenten Meal Ideas 3½ cups flour ⅔ cup shortening ⅔ cup butter 1½ cups of white sugar 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 2 eggs 2 tsp vanilla extract ⅓ cup granulated sugar (for decoration) 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter, shortening and sugar. Stir in the eggs and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt, stir into the creamed mixture until dough comes together. 3. Roll dough into walnut sized balls and roll the balls in sugar. Place them on an unprepared cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. 4. Bake cookies minutes until bottom is light brown. Remove and let cool. 5 Page 5 President s Day By: Griffin Pitzer On President s Day, we celebrate George Washington s birthday. It is celebrated on the third Monday in February. It became an official holiday in Schools are off on President s Day, to remember the sacrifices Washington and all presidents made for our amazing and powerful nation. George Washington was our first United States President. He led us to victory during the Revolutionary war as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. He is famous for saying Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company. He is also known for saying, It is better to offer no excuse than a bad one. Abe Lincoln is also remembered on President s Day. He was the 16th President of the United States. He helped put an end to slavery in the U.S. He is famous for saying The best way to predict your future is to create it. He also carries the nickname Honest Abe. Fun Fact: Washington and Lincoln were both extremely tall for their time. They were both well over 6 foot tall, Washington at 6 2 and Lincoln at 6 4! What did the lightbulb say to his girlfriend? "I love you a whole watt!"

Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret weddings. For this, Valentine was jailed and executed. While in jail he wrote a note to the jailer's daughter signing it "from your Valentine." This makes it the second largest seasonal card sending time of the year. In Finland, Valentine s Day is called Ystävänpäivä, which translates into Friend s Day. It's more about remembering your buddies than your loved ones. Many believe the X symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an X. The X was then kissed to show their sincerity.
