It s a little funny for me to be thinking about Easter Jesus hasn t entered Jerusalem yet There haven t been shouts of Hosanna or palms waving in the air We haven t gotten to that upper room where the disciples shared a meal of love with their beloved teacher There s so much we still have to go through Yet, it feels like Easter is already here with all this warm weather. In many ways this time of year is a crossroads as we change seasons from winter to spring. It is a crossroads for the disciples as they begin to approach life and living together without Jesus at their side. We are at a crossroads as a congregation as we live into and implement our New Beginnings decision to know our neighbors better, and to develop relationship with them in different ways. This week in Atlanta there was a gathering of Presbyterian pastors, seminarians, and other leaders from across the denomination dreaming, visioning, and learning about what the NextChurch will be about. (This was the conference I attended last year in Chicago.) The theme for their time together was Faith at the Crossroads, in which they explored many stories from scripture where some of the most beloved characters were making important decisions in response to God s call. There is video of their worship, exciting Ignite presentations, and testimonies about the movement of God within our denomination. I encourage you to watch a video or two from that conference online at These pre-easter days, already thinking about empty tombs and stories of resurrection hearing of churches transformed and moving forward in their own new beginning discovering together what it means to faithfully follow Christ today These are exciting crossroads days, and I m grateful that we re part of the journey together here at Good Shepherd. Peace and Blessings to you during the remainder of this Lenten season. Bill 1

5 From the Mission Workgroup... Last March Rev. Parker Smith preached at Good Shepherd about his 2014 trip to Zimbabwe. At that time we took a special offering to be used to cover school fees for children who are served by the HCOC (Heather Chimoga Orphan Care Center) in Zimbabwe. It is a tradition in Presbyterian churches to direct mission endeavors in a balanced way to local, national and international projects. We at Good Shepherd have always done this through the annual Church-wide offerings and things like the CROP Walk, our own food bank, Growing Home and Highlands Camp. Two years ago we responded to a request to support Ralston House, a local child-advocacy center, by selling pinwheels and displaying them in a garden on our property. We repeated that in This year the Mission Work Group has voted to have another special offering for school fees at the HCOC and to discontinue our support for Ralston House. We recognize that we cannot do it all and we cannot continually ask all of you for money. Good Shepherd has been one of the Partner churches in the Zimbabwe Mission Partnership (ZMP) since its inception over 12 years ago. This is the Denver Presbytery Partnership that supports the HCOC. Because of our long partnership and our obligation to these children we desire to do our best to make it possible for as many children as possible to go to school. School is not free for them and because they are orphans most of them have no one to cover these costs. Currently there are nearly 1,000 children, preschool high school age, being helped in some way by the staff at HCOC. The ZMP (we 12 or so churches) support the HCOC in its many outreaches to feed, clothe, provide medical care and advocate for these children who live near one of the 3 schools operated by HCOC. The staff continues to work 5 to become a self-sufficient agency. They have received several large grants in recent years, allowing them build a large poultry run and raise chickens for sale and also to supplement the feeding program for the children. They are also growing moringa, a highly nutritious plant, for food and to sell. They have built new staff housing and toilet facilities for some of the child-headed households. They work tirelessly! Unfortunately, neither the monies raised by the ZMP churches nor the grants cover the cost of school fees. Our assistance with covering those fees for some of the children is a small way we can give additional help beyond what we include in our annual GSPC budget or that we raise with our annual fall mission fund-raiser and our support of riders in the June Elephant Rock Bike Ride. The cost for one child to go to school for a year (3 Terms) is $ One Term is just $ Please consider how you can help a child go to school! The special offering will be received on March 6. THANK YOU for your generosity now and in the past. This is, indeed, a very generous congregation! May God bless all our efforts. Items needed for Food Bank in March: canned soups, canned fruit, and mac & cheese. Please place items in the bench in the Narthex or bring to the Food Bank. Thank you for your continuing support of this important mission.
6 Report from the Community Outreach Group February 23 rd was our second meeting. The members are Mary Ann Hood, Barb Mitchell, Bill and Linda Keck, and Jan Myers. One of our first tasks is to research the feasibility, logistics, and liability questions. There are many unknowns at this time. Then there is the possibility of networking / and working with other nearby churches. Although the recommendation is to begin with just two programs we still have four on our list: Vantage Point and Crossroads Schools. How can we be a good neighbor? Reading Program for young children. To be held at Good Shepherd without the parents present. Linda will meet with the Christian Ed Committee on Sunday 02/28 and check liability. Victims Services. Linda Keck will gather information from Adams County. An art workshop for teens at Vantage Point and Crossroads. This would be held in our Fellowship Hall with Jan Myers. We will keep the congregation informed (Minutes on the website and bulletin board) and we welcome any and all input you may have. Please Jan Myers, secretary, jan.myers@earthlink.net. One Great Hour of Sharing Around the world, people lack access to food, clean water, sanitation, education and opportunity. Each gift to One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) helps change the lives of people in these challenging situations. The Offering provides us a way to share God's love with our neighbors in need. Presbyterians, including we at GSPC, have a history of working to build a more just, resilient, and sustainable future. When you give to OGHS during Lent, you are supporting the gifts and talents of people and communities all over the world. The One Great Hour of Sharing offering will be received on Easter Sunday, March 27. The CENTS-A-BILITY (Two Cents a Meal) offering on Feb. 7 was $ * * * AT THE FIRST MEETING OF THE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS COMMITTEE, it was decided that input from the congregation regarding the use, size and design of our physical assets was extremely important. With that in mind, please share your thoughts and ideas by contacting Dick Kelly, chairman of the committee, at richardc.kelly@comcast.net or by calling Don t forget the set your clocks ahead one hour before bedtime on Saturday, March 12, as Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday, March 13th.
