Goldwingers We finished our 2018 year with some wonderful parties and events. Started with the Thanksgiving dinner, then onto Christmas on Main street in Osage Beach, Mo. Toys for needy Children dinner in Keokuk, and we had a really great turn out for the Christmas show and the Toys for needy children. Finally, but not least our Dirty Santa Christmas Party. What can I say, but you all must be trying to stay on the Nice list for Santa as not a single gift was stolen, not that it wasn t thought about, it just didn t happen? Well any how we all had a great time and that s what is important. I hope you all had a great Christmas with you families and even a great 2018 year. Now that 2018 has come and gone we are looking forward to having a wonderful year in 2019 with all of you. 3 THE SOARING EAGLE PAGE 3 RONALD MCDONALD CORNER Just a note about The Ronald McDonald Fund. We are working towards an $ goal this year, and at this time we have a total of $ There are new people taking care of the pop tabs at the Ronald McDonald house in sorting them out, I have been requested to send tabs only, we will need to remove the lids from the tabs. Toys for Needy Children dinner went very well. We had lots of toys, can goods, and the cash donation ended up being $ We had a wonderful meal, and great fellowship. I sure hope everyone headed to Rand Park to see all the Christmas lights. They sure had a lot of new stuff. Dirty Santa on Dec. 9th went very well also, great meal and gift exchange. No stealing this year, what s up with that? Hope this finds everyone had a Merry Christmas and New Year s with family and friends. 5 THE SOARING EAGLE PAGE 5 District Educator for the Iowa District It is that time of year to make plans for the coming 2019 year. If you are like me, your calendar fills up quickly and you want to make sure to reserve some dates for your favorite activities. A few Rider Ed related events that you may want to add to your calendar include the following: March 2nd - Training event and Crazy Supper. These are two events that fall on the same day and at the same location. Similar to last year, we will have two training modules in the afternoon, then the Crazy Supper will follow that evening. One of the modules will be one of the Rider Safety modules and the other will probably be Leadership themed. Although the exact modules have not been selected, this information should be available shortly. Last year was my first time at a Crazy Supper and I know that everyone had a really fun time. Iowa Motorcycle Safety Forum A date has not been announced yet but last year it was May 11 th, so I would guess it will be around that time. This is put on by the Iowa DOT and brings interesting speakers to discuss rider safety. May 18 th and 19th - Safety Weekend is once again offering the ARC, ARC-R, TRC and TRC-R classes, as well as First Aid/CPR at the DMACC Ankeny Campus. The sign-up flyer will probably be online by the time you read this. A few changes for this year include a slightly reduced cost. Riders are $35 instead of $40, and Co-Riders will be $25 instead of $30. The biggest change will be moving the event to Saturday and Sunday, instead of Friday and Saturday. The ARC (for 2 wheels) and the TRC (for 3 wheels) will be on Saturday. These are the classes that offer the classroom and the range (riding) portions. On Sunday is the ARC-R and TRC-R courses. These are the re-certification classes that is what the -R suffix indicates. So, to maintain your level in the levels program you can take one of the re-certification classes every other time you take a class. These re-certification course have the same range exercises as the full courses, but no classroom portion. So, if you take one of the courses every three years to maintain your level 2, 3 or 4, then you only need to be in the classroom once every 6 years. The First Aid/CPR class will be repeated on both Saturday and Sunday, so you can take that on the day that you are not taking one of the riding courses. We include lunch on Saturday, and there will be beverages and donuts both mornings. We should be done with classes by 1 pm on Sunday so people can find something to eat and head home at a decent time. Road Captain Course to be determined. This is a class recommended for every member and it is good to sometimes take more than once. We had two classes last year and one the year before. However, we want to get around to more places in Iowa so that we can make this convenient for everyone to take. You do not have to become a ride leader just because you took

6 THE SORING EAGLE PAGE 6 (Continued from page 5) this course, though the reverse should be true. This is useful for everyone on a group ride, so they can better understand what the lead and trail bikes are doing, and to know what other team members can do to help those riders, as well as learn what it takes to put on a ride. Chapter A is planning this event, but it will be open to the whole district. We should have more information about this next month. If your chapter is interested in holding a Road Captain Course please send me an and I will help you put it together, finding an instructor(s) and planning a schedule. We really want to make this available to everyone. Summer in SE Iowa We are still working out a date and a place, but we intend to hold an ARC and a TRC class in the Burlington area. Details are still being worked out, but we think it will be in the middle of summer. We should have more details on this in the next couple of months, so keep an eye out for this. This will be different than our Safety Weekend since we won t be offering the re-certification courses or the First Aid/CPR classes, just the full riding courses. So, please start considering the March 2 nd and the May 18 th /19 th events. I ll let you know about the other events hopefully next month. And let me know of anything I can do help you out for rider education or the levels program. To find out your levels status you can go to the District website, then go to the Rider Education section and click on Levels Program Information. There are pretty easy instructions on how you can find information, including when you need to take another First Aid or CPR course, or one of the riding courses to stay current. If you take a First Aid and/or CPR course not through GWRRA then send me the information including the course card that you would have received. There are some CPR courses that are available as an online-only course. These do not qualify for our levels program. Those courses are designed for people who typically get practice doing these procedures. Most of us in GWRRA do not get practice performing CPR on the job, like a doctor or nurse would. Practice performing CPR is essential to learning or maintaining that skill. If you have a question about a course that you are considering, then you can check with me first to make sure that it qualifies. Greg Hayes Iowa District Educator, GWRRA Until next month, have a safe winter!
